EDIT BECAUSE I AM A DUMB-DUMB AND SUBTRACTED 600 MINUTES FROM THE TITLE. I HAVE MUCH SHAME. Exactly one year ago, my apartment building caught fire due to a faulty furnace in the attached garage. Thankfully, no one was hurt and only property damage was the end result. Still, I was told by both the fire department and my insurance company to throw out all food, toiletries, and cosmetics, even if they were sealed; with a building built in the early 1900's, there's just no way of knowing what was in that smoke. I itemized my list of everything that I tossed for insurance purposes ($1,200 worth, when all was said and done), and in the coming months, slowly built my makeup collection from the ground up. I tried some new products and went back to some standbys. And I learned about the kinds of products I like. I definitely took inspiration from the numerous end-of-year posts that show up across /makeupaddiction and /makeuprehab in December and early January. I would've posted then, but held back so that everything I listed here would have been purchased within exactly the last year. I included links for each product, down to where I purchased them (when possible). Of course, the usual disclaimer of what-works-for-me-may-not-work-for-you-and-vice-versa applies here. So without further ado, these are my thoughts, after a year's worth of buying/trying stuff. SKINCARE
Boots Botanics Hydration Burst Micellar Water - So I, uh, bought this because a Beautuber told me to (Tati). There are other items on this list that have that designation, too, and I'll try to identify them if I remember - I think it'll be useful to see where my recommendations come from and how... manipulable I've been. That said, this micellar water didn't thrill me. It wasn't bad, but I didn't notice any direct benefits, particularly for my dry skin. I can find better micellar waters for a better price. 5/10.(link)
Cerave Eye Repair Cream - I go back and forth on this product. The price is fantastic for an eye cream, and there's a surprising quantity inside the tube. I kept thinking I was out of the product, but then I was able to squeeze more and more out of it. I just didn't see any huge benefit with regards to de-puffing or brightening undereye circles. I've bought/used two tubes but haven't repurchased since running out in January. 5/10.(link)
CeraVe Hydrating Micellar Cleansing Water - Now, this is more like it! The CeraVe micellar water is a joy to use. It truly leaves my skin feeling plump and hydrated all day. Note: this WILL sting if you get it in your eyes. I'm able to sweep it lightly over a closed eye without an issue, but I have made a mistake of letting some product get into my inner corner, which made for a not-so-fun next 90 seconds. Given that I have a dedicated product for eye makeup removal, though, I see no long-term problem with this. HG status. 10/10.(link)
CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion - I'm on my third bottle of this moisturizer. It's a no-frills product, but it does the job of keeping my face moisturized throughout the night. It works well layered on top of other products, and I love the price. 9/10.(link)
Clinique Pep Start Eye Cream - I think I would like this product a lot more if the packaging weren't so frustrating to use. The ball on the tip of the tube pops out, you dispense a small bit of product, and then you have to gently hold the tube in one hand while pushing the ball back down with the other. Inevitably, some cream will squirt out the tip, so you have to hold the second hand in such a way to catch the flyaway cream and not waste product. The eye cream itself is fine, but I won't repurchase. I'd rather give the Mizon Snail Repair Eye Cream a try. 6/10.(link)
CosRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence - My first foray into the world of snail goo. I love the sensation of rubbing it into my face, particularly at the end of a long day. I definitely plan to repurchase, although I'm not sure it always "plays nice" underneath my makeup. 8/10.(link)
Josie Maran Argan Daily Moisturizer SPF 47 - I really like this moisturizer. It's the best high-SPF product I've tried that doesn't have that "sunscreen smell." There is a slight white cast that fades after it sinks into the skin. It feels great on my dry skin and does NOT break me out. If I had one complaint, it's that it does not do well when I'm sweating. I applied it during some of the hottest days of last summer, where my little A/C unit was barely keeping my apartment at 80 degrees F, and dealt with product accumulating on my upper lip due to the sweat. Aside from that, this moisturizer's great. 8/10.(link)
L'Oreal Paris Pure Clay Cleanser, Exfoliate & Refine - Ehh, I didn't really like this product. I felt like the exfoliation was too rough for what I need in a cleanser, and the clay did nothing for my skin texture/brightness. I've used only about 5-10% of it, and will likely try to donate it. 3/10.(link)
Neutrogena On-the-Spot Acne Treatment - This product gets the job done for most zits that pop up. There have been times where I have a large pimple that never reaches the surface, and this product probably could stand to work a little faster in shrinking them. For the price, it's fine. 7/10.(link)
Paula's Choice RESIST Advanced Replenishing Toner - I got a few samples of this toner when replenishing the next item on the list, and fell in love with it as I used it. I felt a noticeable difference in my skin within a few days of wearing it, and rushed to buy a full bottle. I particularly like that I can apply this with my fingers and avoid losing product in a cotton pad. I will warn against purchasing through "b-glowing" on Amazon, because the bottle wasn't sealed properly and leaked in transit. That was not an issue when ordered directly from the Paula's Choice website. 9/10.(link)
Paula's Choice RESIST Daily Smoothing Treatment 5% AHA - This is a product I started using before the fire, and it was one of my first post-fire online purchases. I love how my skin looks and feels after using it. I went up to using it 2x/day about halfway through the year, but dropped it back down to a just-evening item after connecting it to some dry patches I was experiencing on my nose and cheeks. I've gone through two and I'm maybe halfway through my third bottle. 9/10.(link)
Simple Micellar Cleansing Water - The OG! I bought it because a Beautuber told me to back in early 2016 (Ingrid Nilsen). This one's my second-favorite micellar water that I used this year, after the CeraVe water. I like it, but I think CeraVe's product does a better job at moisture retention for me. 7/10.(link)
Simple Moisturizing Facial Wash - I only use this when I shower (every 2-3 days), so I'm only just finishing up my tube. I like that it's unscented and doesn't strip my skin. However, I'm open to trying other products before repurchasing this one - I've heard good things about the CeraVe cleanser over on SCA. 7/10.(link)
Simple Water Boost Hydrating Booster - I'm on my second tube of this, and I still don't know if it has done anything for me. I don't want to toss it, so I've just been alternating it with the CosRX snail goo, and it works fine. I don't plan on purchasing a third tube at this point. 5/10.(link)
Simple Water Boost Micellar Cleansing Water - This is my least-favorite micellar water that I tried this year. My skin never felt that "hydrated" feeling after using it, and it pales in comparison to the CeraVe version. 2/10.(link)
Up & Up Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover - I will never stop raving about this stuff. I love that it's inexpensive but has no trouble taking off my eye makeup. If I get it in my eyes, it doesn't leave a film across them (unlike its non-generic counterpart, the Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover). I saturate a cotton pad, press it against my eyes and gently massage it into my lashes. My eye makeup comes off, simple as that. 10/10.(link)
Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Highlighter in Opal (Deluxe Sample) - A sales associate at a SiJCP was generous enough to give me one of these during last November's Sephora sale... I didn't think my purchase at the time warranted it. It's a pretty golden color that I don't otherwise have in my highlighter collection, and the finish is very natural. I don't know if I'd ever need a larger quantity than a DS size, so I'll probably keep my eye out for another one while using up my other highlighters. 7/10.(link)
CoverGirl CGSmoothers BB Cream in Fair to Light - This cream is far too light for my skin tone. The texture is fine, but I have to mix it with the Revlon BB Cream (which is too dark... who knows which one I bought first) to make it even somewhat wearable. It feels nice on my face and doesn't detract from my skin texture. However, since I have other products I can use in its place, I won't mind donating this. 5/10.(link)
CoverGirl Ready, Set, Gorgeous! Concealer in Light - This is a concealer I've been using since high school. They've changed the packaging a bit, but generally it's the same formula. The thing is, I don't know if it does, well, anything for my undereye area, the primary place I use it. I don't mind it, but I'm open to finding better options. 6/10.(link)
ItCosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream in Light - This is what I use when I want more of a medium-to-full coverage look. The smell is nice and it blends out relatively well. The jury's still out on whether I'll buy this once it runs out or goes bad. I guess I just haven't used it, then thought later, "Wow, my skin looks great today!" So... yeah. It leaves a lackluster impression. 6/10.(link)
Kat von D Shade and Light Powder Contour Palette - Bought because a Beautuber told me to (Stephanie Nicole). I picked this up at TJMaxx when I went to their beauty section on a whim. It was perfect and untouched, for $23. I don't use it every time I wear a full face of makeup, but I definitely like having the option. It's all the contouring that I need, and I'll buy the Sombre refill once my palette goes bad. 7/10.(link)
L'Oreal True Match LUMI Liquid Glow Illuminator in Golden - It's fine, but nothing special. I'm anything but golden-toned, so once again, it's partially a color-matching issue. I think this would be beautiful on a darker skin tone, and I plan on decluttering it for donation. 5/10.(link)
MAC Prep + Prime Fix+ Setting Spray - Bought because a Beautuber told me to (Jessica Braun, JenLuvsReviews, Tati), during Ulta's 21 Days of Beauty sale. I certainly like it - the smell is nice, the spray is even, and it's easy to use. That said, I really don't want to have to pay full price for this, so I'm using it sparingly until another sale comes along. 8/10.(link)
Maybelline Fit Me! Concealer in Light - Bought because a Beautuber told me to (NikkieTutorials). I wasn't thrilled with this product. Of course, the shade I picked, I believe, is a bit too dark to conceal well. On top of that, I feel as though the CoverGirl concealer I mentioned above just... works better? For all the months I've owned it, I rarely reach for this concealer. It's getting decluttered. 3/10.(link)
Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Treatment Makeup in Buff Beige - (Kind of) bought because a Beautuber told me to (Tati). I meant to buy the concealer, but bought this instead. And, in the end, it's not too bad. I get nice, light coverage that (surprisingly) is a good match for my skin tone. If I'm wearing some kind of "foundation," it's usually this. 7/10.(link)
Maybelline Master Chrome Highlighter in Molten Rose Gold - Bought because a Beautuber told me to (Tati, RachhLoves, Emily Fox). This highlighter is pretty. It's pressed a little harder than I'm used to in the OFRA and Becca highlighters I own, but I don't mind digging a little deeper. I wonder whether it might work better for me with a different brush. This'll do just fine as a great highlighter from the drugstore. 7/10.(link)
Milani Blush in Blossomtime Rose - Bought because a Beautuber told me to... I think (Tati, maybe)? This is a beautiful, blendable blush. It's just the right color, has absolutely NO shimmer, and I will never hit pan, no matter how hard I try. 8/10.(link)
Nyx Bright Idea Illuminating Stick in Pearl Pink Lace - This product is pretty good. It provides a very natural, pinky glow. I like it best on no-foundation days, where I swipe it on, blend it out, and go. I'm not itching to try other colors in this line, though, and since I have other highlighters that I prefer, I won't rush to repurchase once it's gone. 6/10.(link)
Nyx Hydra-Touch PrimeBase - Yeahhh, this primer does absolutely nothing for me. I have dry skin and enlarged pores on my nose. This primer doesn't prevent dry patches from coming through, and it doesn't smooth my pores. There is a strong scent, which is pleasant but unnecessary. I rarely use this primer, so I'll be decluttering it. 4/10.(link)
Nyx Long-Lasting Setting Spray in Matte and Dewy - I... can't tell the difference between these two sprays. The matte spray isn't particularly mattifying, and the dewy spray is nothing special. Now that I've tried Fix+, I get it. It does make a difference to have a nice setting spray. These two products are on my "7 by 7/7" list, so I'll use them up and get 'em gone. They work fine. But there's no question which I prefer when comparing them to Fix+. 5/10.(link)
OFRA + NikkieTutorials Everglow Highlighter - Bought because a Beautuber told me to (of course, NikkieTutorials). This highlighter, I feel, is worth the hype. It's so smooth and buttery, it applies and blends like a dream. It took a major fall from my vanity about 6 months ago. To its credit, it didn't shatter right away - some shards came out, and a couple weeks ago started to crumble around the edges until it eventually split along the lines of the three colors. I'll probably try to re-press what I have left - the white color (Glazed Donut) is beautiful but I don't use it frequently enough to repurchase. The copper shade (Blind the Haters) makes a very pretty eyeshadow shade on me, but a shade from the Juvia's Place Nubian 2 palette (Yaa) is a close dupe. I repurchased that champagne beauty (Glow Goals) in a full size - it's that beautiful. 7/10 for the wheel, but Glow Goals gets 10/10.(link)
Physician's Formula Bronze Booster Highlight & Contour Matte Sculpting Palette - UGH. THIS THING IS HOT GARBAGE. I would dig my brushes into it, swirl into it with my fingers... Nothing! No pigment at all! The only good thing to come out of this palette is the brush, which is kinda similar to the Nars Ita Kabuki brush. I primarily use it for highlighter. I threw the palette out the second I bought the Kat von D Shade & Light Palette and I have. not. looked. back. 1/10.link
Revlon Photoready BB Cream in Light-Medium - This shade is WAAAY too dark on me - I'm usually not the lightest shade in a drugstore makeup, so I thought picking the next-lightest shade would be fine. Not so much. I have to mix it with the CoverGirl BB Cream just to find something closer to a match, but I think I'd rather just donate both products, especially since the Maybelline and ItCosmetics products work better for me. The formula's just okay, but nothing special. 4/10.(link)
Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in Paaarty (Deluxe Sample) - Last year's Sephora birthday gift! This blush is bright, fun to use, and blends out well. I don't really like the price of the full version, though, especially since I like the Milani blush I own about as well. I'd happily take more samples of this blush, but I won't buy it on my own. 7/10.(link)
Ulta Full Coverage Liquid Concealer in Light Cool - Bought because a Beautuber told me to (Jessica Braun, RachhLoves). You don't hear much about Ulta Brand products, but this concealer's not bad - it's very creamy and DEFINITELY full-coverage. My primary complaint with this concealer is that I haven't quite figured out how to wear it on no-foundation days, but I'll get there. 7/10.(link)
Ulta Matte Bronzer in Cool - Pre-fire, I had the Physician's Formula Butter Bronzer, which I opted not to repurchase because I didn't like how strongly scented it was. After swatching my way around Ulta, I really liked the Lancome Star Bronzer in Sunkiss and the Tarte Matte Bronzer in Park Ave Princess, but the $30+ price tags had me balking. On a whim I swatched the Ulta brand bronzer and it felt very similar to Tarte. I'll take savings where I can, so I grabbed it. You go, Ulta. 7/10.(link)
Almay Intense I-Color Liquid Eyeliner in Amethyst - This was a product that I'd been buying since high school. I mean, Almay was the originator of "wear X color to enhance Y color eyes!" Hence, purple eyeliner for brown eyes. The formula is fine, but I found myself gravitating towards brush or felt tip liners and now this line has been discontinued. Not a huge loss, in the grand scheme of things. 4/10.(link)
Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Palette - A well-known palette that is worth the hype. Modern Renaissance has helped me to branch into more pink-red, romantic eye looks. I love that I only have to dip my brush into it for a split second, tap off the excess, and I have plenty of shadow for my whole eye. I have just about reached the recommended shelf life for it, so I'll be looking out for performance issues. I don't plan on decluttering this until I see any problems. I will say, though: the brush is not useful - pretty scratchy. But other than that? Yeah. If you're only buying one mid-range palette from your local Sephulta, give this one a look. 9/10.(link)
Clinique High-Impact Mascara (Deluxe Sample) - This mascara makes my lashes so soft. My lashes don't look insanely long or voluminous after using it, but they still look really pretty. I hate that it's so expensive, because my lashes look just as nice (but in a different way) using Lash Paradise. I got this sample during a 6-free-sample-with-purchase promotion on Clinique's website. If you have a chance to try it, I would definitely recommend it. 9/10.(link)
Clinique Lash Power Flutter-to-Full Mascara (Deluxe Sample) - My first full-face post on Reddit had me wearing this mascara. While I don't think it's anything special, it's not bad. That said, this is a product where I think the sample may not be an accurate representation of the full size; the sample had two separate wands and pots of product, where the full-size uses the same pot but asks the user to turn a dial on the tube to determine how much product goes onto the wand. I mean... it works fine. No major issues with clumping when layering. I would choose the High-Impact Mascara every time over this one, though. 6/10.(link)
Colourpop The Yin to my Yang Pressed Shadow Bundle - This is my first foray into Colourpop Eyeshadows, and they don't disappoint here. I think my favorite of the bunch is Snake Eyes - it's such a pretty all-over-the-lid color. I want to look up some inspiration looks that make use of multiple shadows in the bundle, but even on their own, all six colors are usable, pigmented, and fun to use. 8/10.(link)
Dior Diorshow Eyelash Primer - Bought because... my older sister buys it. At heart, I wanna be like my big sister and do what she does. But I was disappointed in this product - I don't know if I noticed any significant difference between my lashes with or without the product. Maybe it was user error - there definitely wasn't much in the way of explicit instructions from Dior on how you're meant to use the product. As it is, I won't repurchase. 4/10.(link)
ELF x Christian Siriano Palette - This palette comes in an adorable package, with a surprisingly good brush and some fun colors. On an /MUAonthecheap "Drugstore Beauty Chat" last month, I commented with swatches and a neutral drugstore look I put together, which you can see here. I do plan on keeping the palette for the light blue and green shadows, neither of which are anything like I have in my current eyeshadow collection. The green especially is incredibly creamy and I bet it will be fun to use. But if the blue or green don't interest you, or if you already have those colors in your collection, this one should be a pass for you. 6/10.(link)
Essence Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner in Black - Bought because a Beautuber told me to (Tati). This eyeliner goes on fine, but any winged liner look I made with it ended up fading within a couple of hours. Even stored tip-side down, it dries up relatively quickly (within a month or two), but since you pay $3 for it, that's not too hard of a hit (especially since you're supposed to replace eyeliners every 3-6 months). Essence makes a better product at the same price, listed below. 3/10.(link)
Essence Waterproof Superfine Liquid Eyeliner in Black - Bought because a Beautuber told me to (Tati). This one is the better of the two. If you take a look at the length of the tip here, you can get an idea of how easy it is to use. It hasn't dried up as quickly as the other eyeliner listed above, and it dries down to a nice matte finish. I would repurchase this. 8/10.(link)
Jesse's Girl Backstage Collection Eyeshadow in Sounds of the City - I bought this to get free shipping from the Jesse's Girl website, and... yeah. It's not good. There's just no pigment to it. It's getting donated, because maybe someone will be able to do something with it where I couldn't. 1/10.(link)
Jesse's Girl Eyeliner in Black and Brown (Brush Tip) - Bought because a Beautuber told me to (Alexandra from LearningtobeFearless). My first Jesse's Girl black eyeliner was fantastic. It was dark, pigmented, never tugged across the eye, and stayed in place throughout the day. The brown was not as pigmented, so I used the black until it dried up. When I went to replace the black liner, I ordered off of Amazon and it did NOT have the same impact - not good pigment, eyelid tugging for days. Maybe I got a bad batch, but I've seen others have the same issue. Since Jesse's Girl is not available in any drugstores near me, I'd rather seek out an eyeliner that is more reliable. 4/10.(link)
Juvia's Place Nubian 2 Eyeshadow Palette - This is an amazing palette. The Juvia's Place eyeshadows are always top-notch, but this one in particular is such a great blend of mattes and shimmers, neutrals and pops of color. I love taking Madagascar into the crease, deepening the crease with Kenya, and creating a transition of Sheba and Yaa across the lid. Pop on some eyeliner and it's an incredibly flattering look. Pre-fire, I owned the original Nubian palette as well as the Saharan palette. The quality of both were great, but the Nubian 2 is more usable for me. At its current price of $16.25 before shipping (using the 35% off code), this palette is a fantastic buy. It looks like the 35% off promo ended on 5/1, so YMMV as to how much you want to spend on this product - JP prices fluctuate regularly. I paid $23.95 shipped for mine, which isn't the lowest price I've seen but it's absolutely been a worthwhile purchase. 10/10.(link)
Juvia's Place Single Eyeshadows in Lala, Carlota, Nia, Taj, and Empress - Occasionally JP will do a Five Single Shadows for $4 deal, and that's worth taking a jump. You get a random selection, but these five are what I received. The formula is the same as the shadows in the Nubian 2 palette. I am super, super happy with these. EDIT 5/2: The eyeshadow bundles aren't currently on the site, but JP updates their site regularly; they may come back. 9/10.(link to the JP bundles page)
L'Oreal Paris Infallible 24 Hour Eyeshadow in Continuous Cocoa and Amber Rush - I bought Amber Rush because a Beautuber told me to (Tati, Jessica Braun), but I already had purchased Continuous Cocoa on my own. The dark espresso color of CC is great for a soft, dark eyeliner. AR is a very pretty bronze shimmer that can be thrown so effortlessly onto a matte shadow look - I like it much better than the Maybelline Color Tattoo products that I used pre-fire. Overall, these products are good. 7/10.(link)
L'Oreal Paris La Palette Nude - Before the fire, I had the Nude Intense variation, but I like the original Nude better for everyday looks. The shade on the far left is a great all-over-base color, and the third, fourth, and fifth shadows from the left make a very pretty matte eye look. I don't use the shimmers much, and now that I've expanded my collection, there are probably better options for neutral drugstore palettes out there. But for someone first starting out with makeup who wants a very neutral option, this is a good way to go. At some point I'll do a large depot-to-magnetic-palette of my eyeshadow collection, and I'll keep maybe four of these shadows. 6/10.(link)
L'Oreal Paris Voluminous Feline Mascara in Black - Ehhhhh. [sigh] I can't think of anything good to say about this mascara. I guess... the waterproof aspect works? I don't know. The formula dried too quickly, making layering feel just... gross. I would not recommend this one, guys. 2/10.(link)
L'Oreal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara - Bought because ALL THE BEAUTUBERS told me to. And yeah, I see where you're coming from. It's a great formula that adds considerable length to my short lashes, although I could stand for it to hold my curl a bit better. But since I've only tried the non-waterproof formula at this point, I'll reserve judgment on the curl-holding abilities of this product until later. 8/10.(link)
Maybelline Expertwear Mono Shadow in Nude Glow - Bought because a Beautuber told me to - Jessica Braun this time. It's a very pretty shade that adds a touch of shimmer to a neutral eyeshadow look. Worth looking into. 8/10.(link)
Milani Eyeshadow Primer in Nude - Bought because a Beautuber told me to (Jessica Braun, I think?). I've been using this almost daily. I think it does a nice job of preventing creasing and fading in my shadows and liquid liner. I may branch out to try other brands once I'm done with this tube (I've heard good things about CoverGirl's new eyeshadow primer), but for now, this one'll do just fine. 8/10.(link)
Milani Most-Loved Mattes Palette - Bought because a Beautuber told me to (Jessica Braun). I wasn't able to find a link on the website, but I found this in my local Wal-Mart for $15. The middle column (mauves) are somewhat harder to blend, but otherwise I have no complaints. I'd probably recommend this palette to a beginner over the L'Oreal La Palette Nude, but they're about on par with each other. A good option if you need to fill out your collection with neutral matte shadows, but unnecessary if you already have them in your collection. 6/10.(link)
Pérsona Identity Palette - This thing is possibly my favorite makeup purchase of the year. It's in the top ten, for sure - the colors are so pretty on my brown eyes, and it has become my go-to job interview, I-want-to-look-pretty-without-makeup-being-a-distraction palette. It has just about everything I could want in one place - six mattes and six shimmers in incredibly complementary colors. The one thing it needs is a more pink-toned shimmer, but I've got that elsewhere. I picked it up during Ulta's 21 Days of Beauty sale for just $16, and I think it's worth every cent of that price. That said, if another fire happened, I would go pay full price to replace it. 10/10.(link)
Rimmel Scandaleyes Exaggerate Waterproof Eye Definer in Noir - For a product to go on the waterline, I think this is a pretty good product. It's pigmented and doesn't transfer to the lower waterline. I don't use it all that often, but it does the job. I particularly like that it's retractable, so I never have to sharpen it. 7/10.(link)
Stila Stay All Day Liquid Eyeliner in Dark Brown - This was my first impression of the Stila eyeliner, and I don't mind it. Any looks I make with it look beautiful, and the dark brown (a nice espresso color) shows drama without being too harsh. I wish it were a touch wetter, because it tugs at my eye a bit as I apply. 7/10.(link)
Sydney Grace Eyeshadows in Beyond, Cool Brown, Thrilled, and Golden Peach - Some of you might've seen what I've posted before about these shadows. I like them quite a bit - Golden Peach is a beautiful pop of color for the lid especially. I bought Cool Brown and Beyond thinking they'd be complementary (see picture here), but they ended up being very similar on my eye, especially when applied with a brush. However, I wasn't fast enough with my testing of the shadows to meet the return deadline, so I'm stuck with two similar shadows. They are in pretty useful colors, so they'll both see use over the upcoming year. I do plan on purchasing from them again - probably more shimmers or an eyeshadow bundle. 7/10.(link)
Ulta Eyeshadow in Valentine - I originally purchased the color Risk Taker, which is a gorgeous shimmer shade, much more peachy-toned than it appears in the package. Lo and behold, I got it home and it was an EXACT dupe for the Sydney Grace Golden Peach shadow. So I exchanged it for Valentine, which is also very pretty but is more glitter than shimmer, so fallout is an issue. The takeaway here is that I learned I prefer shimmers to glitters, and I need to pick up a glitter primer. 6/10.(link)
Wet 'n Wild Palette in Petal Pusher - I bought this because it was on sale during a Free Shipping promotion Wet 'n Wild had. I had seen it on enough peoples' lists of drugstore eyeshadows that I wanted to give it a shot for a $2.50 price tag. I've only dipped into it once so far, and it was fine, but nothing special. I usually like to use the shadows 3-4 times before forming a full opinion, but based on the first experience, I won't declutter this immediately. I just want to test it out some more. Tentative 6/10.(link)
Wet 'n Wild Color Icon Eyeshadow in Nutty and Brulee - Bought because a Beautuber told me to (multiple, including Tati and Jessica Braun). Brulee is a perfect "base" color for fair skin tones. Nutty is pretty, too, but I find myself wanting it a little darker for better contrast in the crease. Both are worthy of being in any collection, not the least of which that you don't feel like you have to use them sparingly - they cost $2 apiece. 9/10.(link)
[CONTINUED IN COMMENTS; TL;DCONCLUSIONS: An apartment fire necessitated a complete overhaul/repurchase of my makeup/skincare products over the past year. If I were to go through all of it again, I would repurchase anything rated 8 or higher. The 6- or 7-rated products are fine and will be finished, but I plan on keeping my eye open for better alternatives once they run out. I cannot recommend products rated 5 and lower. I hope some of you find this helpful!]
Alright, this is a fairly comprehensive list of all the active launch sites on Earth as of the year 1999, in Overheaven’s alternate history timeline. Realistically, most of these only launch satellites, and the ones that do shoot people into space are probably doing so with capsules, though the more developed countries have fleets of reusable space planes (both manned and unmanned). The overwhelming majority of launches are going to be routine unmanned, reusable rockets sending up supplies or satellites or space station construction materials, and then touching back down on the launch pad like SpaceX's BFR (we get that level of reusable launch vehicle by the mid/late 70's, rather than the late 2010’s - amazing what you can accomplish when two superpowers feel the need to put thousands of nukes in orbit, because the 1967 Outer Space Treaty never happened). Many are run by the military or public-sector space agencies like the ESA, NASA, the Commonwealth Space Program, or Soyuzcosmos (the USSR's NASA counterpart), but I'm willing to bet that at least half (perhaps even two-thirds) of these are private-sector operations, and most non-military public-sector launch sites do private-sector flights as well. Rockets like the Sea Dragon theoretically don't really need launchpads, and while there might be launch facilities which specialize with Sea Dragon-type rockets, I think that the smaller spaceflight companies would just buy one of these rockets, strap the payload on top, and tow it out to sea near the equator for launch. And there's also air-launched sub-orbital vehicles (stuff like Virgin Galactic's White Knight), which I wager could take off from regular old airports on the backs of Boeing 747's or Antonov 124's. Some of these are existing rocket launch sites (mostly for sounding rockets), which I've turned into full-on Cape Canaveral/Baikonur-type facilities, while others are proposed locations for launch sites, and some are just good ideas I figured would work but never appeared in our timeline. Anyway, I'm pretty sure this is enough space infrastructure to serve as the basis for a smoothly-running interplanetary civilization by 1999, with the Internet still in its infancy. In Overheaven’s alternate timeline, the lack of an OST leads to a more aggressive and ambitious space race. Men on on Mars by 1976, men on Venus by 1978, and the construction of huge nuclear missile platforms in orbit by both superpowers. By the late 70’s, space industry was just getting started, and by the 80’s, the “Space Boom” was in full swing, baby. Experimental atomic research, rotating space hotels, medical and chemical research labs in orbit, space manufacturing, solar power satellites, mining near-earth asteroids, space tourism, orbital fuel depots, telecom sats, space casinos, offworld banking, and so much more. By the late 1990’s, the idea of people working and even living in space is still exciting, but it’s also pretty damn normal now. With all these launches, plus material being extracted from Luna and near-Earth asteroids, I think it's perfectly feasible for there to be a few Stanford Toruses, and at least one O'Neill Cylinder, under construction in Earth orbit by '99. And as launch costs continue to plummet, expect the scale of humanity's ambitions to only escalate. And these are just the launch sites on Earth. I don't even know how many orbital launch facilities there'd be by this point - huge space stations building truly-massive vessels in zero-g with all those resources we're shooting up on what I imagine is a daily or even hourly basis; ships like those, built and fueled in orbit, would undoubtedly be able to reach Mars, Venus, Mercury, the Main Belt and Jupiter with relative ease. And everything I've stated here will only continue to grow at a geometric rate as more of the Solar System's resources are harnessed, spaceflight costs continue to drop, and technology continues to improve. And we’re not talking about Overheaven’s current year, which isn’t actually 1999. It’s 2185. Oh, right. International Race Station | Loop 9 - Around the Bay 30K
We finally make it to my home and native land, Canada. Hamilton, Ontario to be specific where the oldest running road race in North America takes place. So splash a little maple syrup in your coffee this morning as we go Around the Bay for 30K.
Located on the western end of Lake Ontario, Hamilton is home to a metro population of about 750,000 making it the ninth largest in Canada. Traditionally, the local economy has been led by the steel and heavy manufacturing industries. Within the last decade, there has been a shift towards the service sector, particularly health sciences. Things to see or do include:
A gritty city, Hamilton is certainly not everyone's top destination, but it has some hidden gems if you’re willing to search for them. If not, it’s location near Toronto and Niagara allows for you to explore different options and make a trip to the race worthwhile.
Course map Elevation Gain - ~95m (312 ft) Typical Temperature- 4oC (39oF) High | 0oC (32oF) Mean Additional Notes: The race finishes inside an arena allowing family and friends to cheer you across the finish line inside, out from the cold. There is also a 5K race at the event. Also interesting is that all finishers receive a Graduated finishing medal (based on set time standards)
Tips: The last third of the race that is made up of a series of major hills (both up and down)
As quoted from the race website:
The Hamilton Herald Newspaper and cigar store owner "Billy" Carroll, originated and sponsored the first "Around the Bay Road Race", run on Christmas Day, 1894. It is now the oldest road race in North America, older than the Boston Marathon which was born three years after the Around the Bay Road Race. The race tested the abilities of the finest long distance runners, but was also an avenue to lay down some bets. The Around the Bay Road Race established Hamilton as a running mecca for long distance runners, and it was not uncommon for thousands of spectators to line the route to watch their local favourites start the race from the front of the Herald Newspaper Offices at 17 King Street West Hamilton. In the early 1900's, Jack Caffery and William Sherring battled it out and won two "Bay" races each. Caffery went on to stun the Americans by winning the Boston Marathon in 1900. To add insult to injury, Hamilton's William Sherring and Fred Hughson placed second and third, behind Caffery, making it a Canadian sweep. Caffery rubbed it in even further by coming back the next year 1901, to win Boston again. Not to be outdone by Caffery, William Sherring went on to win the 1906 Olympic Marathon in Athens, Greece, making him a Canadian hero. That same year, Tommy Longboat, an Onondaga from Six Nations near Caledonia, won the "Bay" race and the next year in 1907, surprised everyone by winning the Boston Marathon. Hamilton's James Duffy also went on to win the 1914 Boston Marathon, after two Consecutive Bay wins. The Americans gave the Bay race an International flavour when Sam Mellor and Mike Spring from New York each won the Bay race and then Boston in the same year. Frank Zuna, from New Jersey also won Boston in 1921 and then conquered the Bay in 1922 and 1923. The Canadians arrived back in the spotlight when Gerald Cote, a Quebec soldier, won the Bay and Boston in 1943, and Jerome Drayton won the Bay in 1973, 1974 and then Boston in 1977. Scotty Rankine holds the distinguished honour of seven wins, established in the late thirties and early forties, while Peter Maher won his fifth Bay race in 1996, tying the record of local Gord Dickson, who had five wins in the late fifties. In 1997, the Bay race saw the closest finish ever, as Paul Mbugua of Kenya crossed the finish line in a time of 1:35:35, beating two other runners by a footstep. In 2006 the Bay Race finish was moved indoors to the 15,000 seat FirstOntario Centre. Runners, family and friends are now able to view the finish in comfort. The Men's record was broken in 2010, by Alene Reta 1:32:22 who shaved 28 seconds off Simon Njorje's time. Lanni Marchant of London, ON broke the women's course record in 2013 with a time of 1:44:40 by trimming 1 minute 35 seconds off Lioudmila Kortchaguina's previous record of 1:46:15. The Around the Bay Road Race continues to be full of tradition and excitement, and this year will be no exception.
Like many of the smaller races I’ve covered it’s hard to find out if anyone notable is running in this year’s event. But with large cash prizes for the top 5 male and female finishers (1st=$4000, 2nd=$2000, 3rd=$1000), I’m certain there will be some fast runners looking to have good performances. Loop 9 is looped. Next week we will be headed to Africa for the first time in this series where we will cover the Two Oceans Marathon (which actually isn’t a marathon) in South Africa. I hope everyone enjoys their weekend!
I know that there is posts for making vault ideas already, but i wanted to list some of my own comment on them if you want and please suggest some ideas for new ones.
Background to my Vaults
One of the great minds of vault-tec is Alexander Markusburg, who created a lot more gecks then vault-tec ever said they made. Including 5 'Super Gecks', powerful enough to make the others Alexander made worthless. Afraid and worried for the world, he went and with numerous allies created many more vaults all over the world, known as the A-G vaults. He placed his super gecks in 5 special vaults under 5 certain cities. Soon he went into his private vault under the Berlin wall, known as the Berlin Vault. Inside is him, who created tons of bodies for himself and froze his old one, His head scientists who also have a few clone bodies, and numerous people brought in to help test his ideas, creations, and more. However one more thing,....due to the idea of magic from the dunwich locations in fallout, he was both a scientist, and a mage. Note: Alexander is not op because, well....you could disable all of his clones and then kill him easily so....yea, he is still human, just a smart one who made things he couldn't trust in anyone's hands. Also unlike Vault Tec, Alexander didn't want to experiment too much, and thus only the F and G vaults are the ones where more experiments take place, due how they were made by some scientists that joined him from Vault Tec, not trusting them either. Note 2: The Gun Runners are in a sense a company in the wasteland, thus if there is a base, and there is traders, you can still get companies. Note 3: Vaults A-E all are mostly harmless, with more less chaotic situations and experiments Note 4: I may not fit all of them here, so the most i will go to is to the 90th or 100th vault Note 5: There is a lot of character i will make for each vault, if you want a character to be featured in one of the A-G vaults say so Note 6: A mini geck is bascally a smaller portable geck with a few strong yet hard to recharge charges, once it's all used up, it breaks down.
The 5 Super Geck Vaults
The White House Vault: A vault under the white house in Washington DC. A secret from even the president, containing a super geck, a few other extra gecks, and tons of instructions, recreations of World Heritage sites and american locations, Armories, food storage, labs meant for the geck, 3 reactors, and a hall of Presidents and other Disney world like locations. The only person there is a Mr. Handy programmed to help who ever came learn how to control the super geck, he also is much stronger then other Mr. Handys.
The Great New York Vault: A vault under the statue of liberty in New York City. Filled with more labs, the super geck, other world heritage site locations recreated, libraries, 5 armories, some reactors, and more. Inside their lives a cult of female synths who all see the statue of liberty as a goddess, a powerful one. They are kind however some left and became the New York City cult known as the Daughters of The Lady. There is also of cruse instructions, and also some arcane rooms, meant for more.....mystical uses. Also it has a church in it, 2 to be correct, one for the synths, the other, for Christians.
The Rome Vault: A vault under the Roman Colosseum in rome. Like the others it has several rooms relating to gecks, LOTS of weapons, food, a few churchs, hertiage sites, instructions, The Super Geck, etc. However there is more, such as a room like the president's hall but with popes. The Oven of Eden, a machine that creates any food afther a card is scanned by it. The Arcaum of The New Templar, a massive church like room with tons of books and various labs, mystical rooms, and some rooms with Knight stuff. Finally, the Room of Culture, filled with all kinds of culture, with instructions on how to bring them back, as well as fake and fantasy ones, and few based on 60's to 2000's culture. The vault only has synths based on roman warriors and characters, as well as a large Dragon bot that tells people how to create fantasy creatures with the Super Geck.
The Saint Petersburg Vault: A vault under the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. It has it's Super Geck and various rooms that are common to the other mega vaults expect for a few. A room with all Tsars and Rulers of The Russian Empire, A series of rooms based on seasons, A terraforming test room with ideas on how to terra form some planets if earth got too bad, and a Room with every piece of Mythologies and all fantasy novels and comics. Another room there is a massive comic book room and a room with a punching bag with Stalin's face on it. Inside the only things there are 5 Synths styled after Russian Mythical Heros and 2 synth ladies in a strange tea room talking about some ideas based on the UK and Scandinavia coming together to defeat Russia.
The Tokyo Vault: A vault under Tokyo, in you guess it, Japan. It has all the commons of the other vaults, and like all the others has unique rooms to it. All are based on Japan, Asia, Oceania, and Recreating the Republic of China. One of the more note worthy rooms is a massive room filled with copies of every movie, video game, anime, tv show, and manga in the world. The only robot here is a kind AI called Ms. Nature-San, who controls a Synth to water the peaceful greenhouse within the vault.
The A Vaults (Scattered all over the world, and Alexander Jokes he placed one on the moon)
A1: Located under New York City, the vault is divided into 5 areas. The Blue Section, The Red Section, The Yellow Section, The Green Section, and the Center White section. Each area had special vault uniforms for them and petting zoos for animals. They had teams that would fight in the Center's Sports Arena, in 3 different sports, Baseball, Soccer, and Foot Ball. Each section has a different team for each, and the petting zoo has tamed animals of each team with in. The Vault is peaceful and is run by a council of 5 overseers, who are elected each year, where the main person meant to keep peace, is the overseer in white. It also has 5 Goliath droids who help defend the vault from attackers. Today it is a part of the Growing New New York City nation started by Vault A2.
A2: A vault filled with only scientists, and a massive library of all of the books on earth, even of religions, and one occult book of a made up goat based monster made by Alexander. Everyone there is very smart and raised to value the body and to grow the mind. However the outcasts of the vault, who had trouble keeping up with knowledge due to forgetful mindsets had found the occult book, and started a cult known as The Goatmen. Sadly when they tried to take over the smarter side of the vault created powerful robots that chased them out. The cult is still around but now the vault has created the New New York City nation with towns, and have worked to rebuild the city.
A3: A vault south of a little town in Alberta, Canada. This vault was made to have numerous cloth and armor making machines in it, as well as a few forges, and was filled with people who were either blacksmiths or tailors in some way. The vault's jumpsuits were so bad looking in design that it lead to the tailors making tons of outfits while the blacksmiths made both armor and weapons to keep them selves busy. Soon when the vault opened the Blacksmiths stayed in the vault turning it into Samson Works Co., named after the biblical judge. The tailors went to create a settlement that had the base of the new Spider's Silk Clothing Inc. another new business for the wasteland. With new towns and settlement cropping up, traders went to these two businesses and bought items from them sold them and gave them money back. The one issue is that the blacksmiths and tailors were always uneven at any point in time, only a few times were they equal in number.
A4: A vault near New Mexico city in New Mexico. This vault had a total of 3 areas in the vault that were simulation rooms, where the dwellers were given orders to have any kids believe this was real, and had to play along to the point of forgetting that it was fake. Only the Overseer and scientists knew the truth and keep the vault running in the background, each room having set up a special medical response incase any death had nearly come. The 1st of the rooms was the Old Sliver West, a western styled one that takes place during a sliver rush, a Mexican revolution, and the arrival of Gatling Guns to the west. The 2nd of the rooms was the Good Old Days~, a town like the simulation of tranquility lane in the sense that it's greatly like a 50's sitcom place and gives people nostalgia, with a sense of a war going on in the far far east in China, that could lead to the return of the republic. The last room was the Kingdom of Davoman, a fantasy and medieval land with 3 main rich families and everyone else being soldiers or just workers in various jobs around, with synths and robots acting as monsters and enemy kingdom soldiers. The main issue with the vault is how when found the simulation is still running, the overseer's family worried about things, due to how many of the others who knew the truth died. This leads to were the vault now having a total of 4 or so generations leading many people to not know the truth, but the scientists and overseer's family.
A5-a and A5-b: A pair vaults in North Eastern Brazil. The a section was filled with only women, while the b side only men. The two vaults had only two ways to get to each other, the reactor rooms or a single pair of doors that only the overseers could unlock. The two vaults each month had 5 days or so where the vaults opened up and the men and woman got together. Most of the time on some of these days there would be pairs of men and women who....well....made out and a lot of times had 'intercourse'. This led to love slowly fadeing away, between the two genders, only the overseers were around each other enough to know what love was. Whoever finds the vaults teaches the two about what real love is, leading to some going off in various groups to build relationships and love while some stayed at the vault, which was eventually abandoned when the last pair got together and left.
A6: A vault about 12 miles north east of Las Vegas Nevada, or in this case New Vegas. This vault was filled with mechanics and various new types of Mr. Handies, Ms. Nannies, Protectrons, and other bot types. The mechanics would creation new robots based on the tons of parts and spare supplies around the vault, which had several garages with in for the robots. Some of them broke off, and made a large garage nearby the vault called 'Red Hot Hot Rods' Garage, where they made cars and other modes of transportation. The ones that stayed turned the vault and the area around it into a city, like Vault 8. Known as The Roboyard, a massive city of robots, mechanics, and more stood to rival new Vegas, and thus many securtrons can be found in the city, reprogrammed by the mechanics there.
A7: A vault under a small city in Queensland Australia. This vault was not only filled with 1040 Australians and Aboriginals, but also 40 Dogs, 40 cats, 67 goldfish, and 55 koi. The vault's Scientists tested with the dogs, cats, and fish, using the vault's bio dome with in it to test them, and soon created several new speices of Dogs, Cats, and Goldfish/Koi. However due to the cloneing used to help create the new speices, the animals were started to outnumber the humans, so the scientists put the vault into 'GREEN HOUSE' mode which made the bio sphere grow it's self out and transform the vault into a underground jungle and lake, with the large hill it was built into's top to crack open like a crater showing the massive paradise of dogs, cats, and fish below. Now a days more animals found their way in and the animals either eat plants (the fish do this) or the Rats, Wild Pigs, and wild chickens. The People who left live nearby in a town called Merrybrook, as they live by several brooks.
A8: A vault in North most Scotland, noted for it's mostly isolated location, until 500 people flocked there to live in the vault. This vault was made to have it to were the scientists tested Brain science on humans who wanted to, most humans that did were made into Synth Cyborgs, which most were ok with. The Vault soon become free to open 100 years after the bombs droped, however...like a certain other vault, the 500 people where split into what to do now. The 5 Groups were, The New Scots, People who wanted to rebuild scotland and make it a kingdom greater then the Uk, The Loyal Brits, English and Scots who wanted to help rebuild the UK and grow it into europe, The White Knights, a group of various Christians and Jews who wanted to help people, and thus went on to make Knight based armors and weapons to become the saviors of Europe. The last 2 were the Spring Heeled Gang, a group of thugs and punks who became a raider like group and based themselves in a nearby Mill, turning it into a factory, and The Vault Loyalists, who simply stayed in the vault to keep working on enchanceing humans and working on the future of brain science. Most Synth-Human Hybrids stayed at the vault with a chunk of scientists.
A9: A vault in North eastern New Mexico, USA. The vault is made with an AI that has made 100,000+ Radio Stations of all kinds. The People in the vault are very peaceful and many of theme style themselves after their favorite radio station, leading to Music Genres creating cultures in the vault. The AI also seeked to make many items based on the more story radio stations and such, leading to suits and collectables being pumped out. When the doors opened the Vault was uncovered by a swarm of wandering Builders known as the 'Hammer 99'ers' who helped turn old Vault A9 into a capital building for a new city with the wandering group's Geck working with this vault's geck. When the Swarm of builders left, the Vault dwellers went and made a city of Radio Stations, Music, and so many cultures and mindsets, called Radio Tower City, noted for the massive radio tower in the city's center. They also walled off the city for protection, but the radio signals travel very far, due to the AI's love for people to hear music, stories, and ideas.
The B Vaults (Mostly North America, and the Caribbean)
B1: A vault under a large Donut Cafe in Seattle, Washington. This vault was filled with mostly Bakers and gardeners. The Vault was filled with tons of sweet making machines and ovens, and a massive garden filled with the ingredients required for it. Over time, the craft of sweets, Donuts, Chocolate, Coffee, Tea, and even Soda all became mastered by the people of the vault. They soon left and make a fortress of the Donut Cafe and turned it into the headquarters of the Happy Sweets Bakery and Cafe business. As well as a home for the former vault Dwellers. Most people have build a settlement around here called Donutberg, after the town's favorite pastry. The vault was to test if time would make certain food items more loved then others as well as a way to keep tons of snack foods alive.
B2: A vault in northern Nevada, not too far from the Mojave. This vault was kind of like Vault 21 from New Vegas, but instead of gambling, every major choice for the Vault was settled on Pool Games and Air Hockey. Overtime the dwellers grew to love the simple vault life, but soon the time came to leave and make a new town. The Overseer was a vert ambitious man, and bet that when they leave they could make their own Reno, their own Vegas. It was staked with the voice of the other dwellers, and for the overseer, this meant the future. However, he won and they left, and used their smaller, less powerful Mini-Geck to help build the city. The City was called Tamdon, City of Games. The city became nearly as popular as New Vegas, as the city had several arcades, casinos, and tons of restaurants and hotels.
The C Vaults (Mostly in Asia and Oceania)
The D Vaults (Mostly in South and Centural America as well as Africa and the Middle East)
D1: A vault located in Cairo Egypt, a little near the city's outer areas. This vault is meant to keep Egyptian Culture and Islam alive. However overtime, some less kind Muslims and Egyptian Pagans had a dispute that divided the large vault in two. One side contains mostly Muslims, with a couple of Christians and Jews, who all get along well, the Christians have a small church as do the Jews with the synagogue. The Muslims have a large Mosque in their side of the vault and tend to be peaceful, unless it's with the Pagans. The Pagans have styled their side after classical Egyptian styles, patterns, art, and more and worship old Egyptian Gods and Goddesses. They do however have a roman group that left a few years after the vault doors unlocked, and went to start fixing the city. Although they don't all get a long, the Muslims, Christians, Jews, Pagans, and Roman styled people all left and started building a large settlement in the ruins of Cairo. The town is known as simply Neo Cairo, and is well loved by the people who live there. Currently the Town's mayor ending up being a Christian from the growing group of said Christians who wants to keep the peace between all the groups. The vault was noted for 5 Unique suits of Power Armor that were based on the following Egyptian Gods, Ra, Anubis, Set, Horus, and Bastet.
D2: (Idea is Octson's on Discord) This Brazilian vault idea of Octson's would be big but half of it became inhabitable with that inhabitable side having humanoid zombie like monsters with baby Limbs around their body. How these monsters were there in the first place is because of a series of experiments the vault has of artificial pregnancy with the intent of using the serum to recover the Brazilian population easily. The serum for artificial pregnancy was supposed to work on both genders and when the experiments start it shows that it dose work on women but the men that bravely participated in the experiment? They slowly died and came back mutated because of the different sex organs. This would be located in Rio, and is near a small town made by survivors near it, of Scientists who wish to spread the working pregnancy medicine to other women in the world, and is strongly trying to keep the women alive at all costs.
D3: (Octson's idea) This vault is in Kenya, 53 miles from the largest city in Kenya. Well Octson thinks Africa wouldn't look drastically different in fallout due to it mostly being a desert. But he thinks the radiation would've made the place a little cold along with mutating some of the animals. What's the African vaults solution? Mix lion/lioness DNA with the inhabitants of the vault so they could be able to survive the outside cold. This results in the vault being inhabited by anthro lion/lionesses, they still have 5 fingers and toes along with stronger immunity to some sicknesses but they are now vulnerable to lion based sicknesses, they are a bit physically stronger then regular humans but they have been decided into 3 groups, People who want a Kenyan republic, people who want a communist union, and a Stratocray made from former guards and soldiers. The Groups split off into 3 large settlements. New Nairobi, for the republicans, Mji Mkuu Mpya, for the communists, and Upanga, for the Stratocrats. Each group has different ways to rebuild Kenya, with the Republicans trying to also fix the environment and trying to help Nomads from the north (all the way to europe). The communists are trying to contact china to try to get help to build a new Communist union, and want to destory and conquer the other groups. The Stratocrats simply want a world were the Military rules but have a alliance with the democrats to help beat the Commies.
The E Vaults (Mostly in Europe)
E1: A vault apart of a series of vaults in Europe, this one being seen and located in Eastern Greece near the boarder of Turkey. This vault was made to be filled with tons of Greek culture and even had many weapons, power armor suits, and items made in Greek mythology and cultural styles. The inside even has columns, fig farms, and the guards wear Greek like armor. In this vault, instead of a overseer, there was a council called Olympus, who lived in a large office with rooms themed after each member. The council by the time the vault opened became the typical rulers of these people who grew so used to it, they saw Greek culture and style as the future. They went to create New Athens a massive mega city in Europe. Still ruled by a council and making various more medieval/middle ages in terms of weapons, like swords, bows and arrows, etc. They do still use high tech, yet have their own versions of it styled in a very ancient Greece or Greek mythology fashion. Such as plasma rifles called Zeus Rifles, and shooting blue more electric bolts of plasma instead of the normal green. The Vault is current being turned into a Museum of Greece's history, as well as lifestyles of New Greece. The vault also houses many advanced tech, which have been used to make more normal versions of mutated animals, it being called a Geck Lite, a weak yet very useful geck.
The F Vaults (aka when Alexander's vaults ended, and his fellow scientists vaults started afther these, alexander pulled the plug fully on vault building but 32 more scientists still went out and made some. All are near the water)
F1: A vault near the coast of Finland, noted for part of it being under water. This vault was set up to contain 400 humans, and multiple finish animals. The dwellers were told to treat everyone with respect, but also to obey the vault's 'Grandfather' with out question. The Grandfather overtime had the people become more in touch with finish culture and history, some left the vault over time and made the small settlement of New Karsa, a very viking styled town that is filled with both christians, and pagans. However inside, the Grandfather became more insane, like a certain overseer from Fallout 3. He soon started training some of the animals to be his guard, the others were protected by him as he soon dawned a viking styled power armor he made over the years. Soon he convince multiple people to follow him, and then the vault dwellers were killed by Grandfather 'Yuro' as he called himself now, his animals, and his followers. The ones who lived sealed the vault and escaped to New Karsa. They used some tech to build a few turrets incase Yuro ever got out.
F2: Located on the northern coast of Finland, 500 miles from Vault F3. Unlike F1, the vault had more of a mix of people instead of mostly Finnish people. The Vault had a special FEV strain known as the 'YFEV' aka the Yeti Forced Evolutionary virus. Over time it was pumped to everyone in the vault expect for the scientists. The virus kept genders and sexes unlike the FEV, and made both special in different ways. The males can take a lot more damage and are a bit faster, but the females, although shorter, are immune to more sicknesses and tend to have much higher stamina. Soon after the pumping stopped, the Yetis were tricked into allowing the scientists to control them, creating the Finnish Yeti Horde controlled by the scientists until they were killed by Yuro, then the yetis made different tribes based on what they though was best.
The G Vaults (only 32, made in the last few years before the bombs started falling across the world, made by the Lucky 32 scientists, as each made one of the vaults. All are under a existing building)
G1: The Vault's location is right under Google Headquarters. A vault like the one in Van Buren, where it's controled by an AI. However, the vault is massive and divided into 10 sections based on the AI there who brainwash and change the dwellers who end up in their part of the vault and make sure any children born in their areas remain loyal to the AI. Made by code name Dr. Seven Clovers, to test how many times humans can be brainwashes before they break and try to die from the insanity of not knowing who they really are. The AI include Duchess Sliver, who is a fancy and somewhat kind woman who picks favorites and has the woman try to look like famous stars and have the men be 'butlers', which lead to men eventuality being seen as slaves in this section, only there to make more daughters by the time the player find them. The next AI is a much kinder AI called Mother Maria, personaitly wise she is kind of like Curie, in how she is kind, curious, and scientific, however she loves to test with her humans and treats them like kids, but knows her bountries with some. She made them mentally think all the tests are good, even if they get mutated. The next AI is a Patriotic AI known as President John Freedom, a Uncle Sam like figure who wants all the people there to be soldiers and strong patriots, basically the humans there are exteremly strong hyper patriots, and have grown to super mutant size. A creepier AI know as Der Nachtmensch, a AI who loves horror and thus makes his dwellers love horror movies, giving them kind yet very Morbid mindsets, however they hate it when people insult them, and hate anything that looks like one of John's Hyper Patriots. Chairman Mako is the next AI and is a Socialist-Communist based mind that has convinced everyone that they are either Australian or Chinese, and that America has fallen in to the USSR's hands. Warqueen Athena the next AI is a AI who thinks she is the greek goddess, her part of the vault is mostly greek styled and everyone man and woman dresses like so, and think they are in a underground town under their great kingdom of Greece. The Lion the one AI who took further steps in his transformations, making them all infused with African animal DNA, creating human animal hybrids, as the AI was of a Lion Man who wanted to bring a new Race, His section is sealed from the others and has 3 bio domes. Prime Minster Moonsworth a kind old britsh AI who wants to keep things prim and proper, and has his dwellers think that they are citizens of a Underground Mega London, which said Mega London he wishes to escape the vault to build. Viviana a Spanish lady with a kind heart but a lot of sass in her AI chip, she had her citizens become suit, dress, and cloth loving guys and gals, but also made them a little on the rage side of things. Saint Bolts a AI who is religious and meant to be a 'In Case the Catholics are all dead and we need a new pope AI' who made all of his dwellers become Zealots in Catholic Christianity, but they love peace and will fight for their religion, The Pope wishes for some of the other AIs to leave due to how they threaten his people.
G2: A vault located in The Sunset Sarsaparilla Factory in the Mojave. The vault was filled with machines and plants to make sunset sarsaparilla, and lots of it. Simply when placed in slowly the vault workers mostly worked on making the drink, and they kept doing it. This was because the Overseer, over time was hypnotizing them to never stop working on the sarsaparilla, giving them few hours of sleep a day. He also killed anyone who didn't work for him, due to his own person securtrons his vault came with. He was hell bent to keep the drink alive, and no one was going to stop him, ever.
Hockey has thrived most in areas with long, cold winters; places where people needed to do... something outside to avoid frostbite. When most hockey fans think of the game internationally, they think of the Olympics, or maybe the World Juniors or the World Championships. There, a similar group of teams from a similar group of countries play each other year after year. It's easy to think that hockey's only played in a few places. Wrong. Hockey is growing globally, and it's growing fast. One of the places where hockey is growing fastest is Africa. When you think of the stereotypes surrounding hockey – cold weather and rinks, expensive equipment, rich players and families - you don't think of Africa. That's fair. Truth is, hockey's been played in Africa, in some way or another, since the 1930's. There have been professional leagues, games played in front of thousands of spectators, and even a few NHL players and prospects born on the continent. Four NHL players were born in Africa – Chris Nielsen was born in Tanzania, Olaf Kolzig in South Africa, and both Rumun Ndur and Akim Aliu hail from Nigeria. Players with roots in Congo-Brazzaville (the Impose brothers, Auguste and Aurelien), Eritrea (Oliver Kylington), Liberia (Clarence Kparghai), and Swaziland (Adrian Savelo Alvarstein) all play in Europe or in North America. Today, I'm gonna try to take you through each country in Africa that currently plays, or may start playing soon. There aren't a lot, obviously, but there are more than you might think. We'll start with the first.
South Africa, as far as African hockey goes, is the motherland. The first hockey game on the continent was played in Johannesburg in 1935, on a temporary rink. A year later, the South African Ice Hockey Association was founded, and the first permanent ice rink in the country, the Wembley Ice Rink, was opened. South Africa joined the IIHF in 1937, and formed a national team, which played a senior team from Canada later that year. The country's first star was Heinz Ball, a German-born player who moved to the country after WWII broke out. Heinz came to Jo-burg in 1936, and he was joined by his brother Rudi in 1948. If you're wondering, yes, these are the same Ball brothers who we wrote an article on back in the fall. It took until 1961 for South Africa to play its first international game, played at the World Championships in Switzerland. South Africa played Yugoslavia, and... they got their butts kicked, 12-3. South Africa finished 19th out of 20, winning only one game in the tournament. Not a great start. Meanwhile, back home, a semi-professional league was starting at the Wembley Ice Rink. The rink's owner, Hymie Sofer, started a small league that would play, every Tuesday night, at his arena. He teamed up with the SAIHA's head, Otto Hertz, a wealthy businessman related to the same Hertz family that people rent cars from today. Hertz was flush with money, and bankrolled the league. With this new money, Sofer hired scouts and coaches, and set out to attract players from top European leagues. South Africa is south of the equator, and as such, has opposite seasons to the ones seen further north. Sofer and his group scheduled the season during the European off-season, and promised players decent pay, summer work, and a chance to stay in shape over the summer. Many players took up the offer. The teams were named after the countries where most players came from; Canadians played on the Maple Leafs, the Swiss Bears were full of Swiss players, and players from the Austrian league suited up for Edelweiss. Other teams, like the Holiday Inns and the Hush Puppies, were named after sponsors. Things went well for the league, until the world discovered the nasty side of South Africa – apartheid. Other countries stopped playing the South African national team, and many countries boycotted South Africa altogether. The country's currency, the rand, plummeted. Players previously attracted by quick money in the off-season went home. The league died on its feet. Today, South Africa has the most advanced hockey infrastructure in Africa by a mile. They have a women's national team, founded in 1999, which is the highest ranked on the continent. The men's side now features players like Ashley and Gary Bock, a pair of goaltending brothers who are known for their titanic size, and players like Uthman Samaai, Wesley Krotz, Xander Botha, and Reelan Malgas, all of whom spent their winters playing in North America. In South Africa now, there are three amateur hockey leagues, centered in Cape Town, Gauteng, and Durban. More than 20 teams take part, and there is a national championship set up where the winners of the three leagues face off for a national title.
Namibia is an odd case. You see, Namibia doesn't play ice hockey; the country doesn't have a rink. However, they have a very advanced inline hockey program. Namibia has a domestic inline league set up, with teams like the Swakopmund Coastal Pirates, the Windhoek Lions, and the Otjiwarongo Scorpions. The Scorpions actually hold the world record for the longest inline hockey game ever played, going for 27 hours to raise money for the national program. Final score: 316 to 291. The Namibian national team plays tournaments around the world, and will attend the FIRS World Inline Championship in Italy this June. However, despite their inline infrastructure, Namibia has no ice rinks. One may possibly open up on the site of a new shopping mall in the capital of Windhoek, but for now, there's nothing. However, some top team players, like Vincent Van Biljon and Riyaan Ely, have taken their game on ice in other countries, like South Africa or Australia. They also know how to dress up, too. Which is nice.
We're now taking a hike up north, to Algeria. The Algerian national team was started by players of Algerian descent playing in Europe. They were first formed in '06, and played their first organized international games in the IIHF's 2008 Arab Cup. The Arab Cup was intended to be an annual competition between Arab nations with teams; after 2008, the idea was abandoned. The team played their first game against Kuwait, and got their first goal; scored by French-born Hakim Boukhaloua. They lost all five games they played, but the team's top scorer, Harond Litim, won tournament MVP. Since the Arab Cup, the Algerian team has been in a sort of stasis. The national team has played a few exhibition games, including one against a lower-level French team which ended 8-8. The Algerians were paced by Francky Sadani, who scored five points, and Yassine Fahas, who had three assists. Now, only two Algerian national players still play in France – Gael Benbekhti and Harond Litim. The team's main supporter, player and manager Karim Kerbouche, follows the team and it's players wherever they go, snapping photos and chronicling the team's story along the way. They can't join the IIHF officially, since for many years, there were no ice rinks and no current domestic league. However, a rink has been built in Algiers, and another rink may be erected elsewhere soon. A league is set to start for next season, and some Algerian hockey players have received equipment donations from the NHLPA. It doesn't seem too far-fetched to say that Algeria may soon be the IIHF's newest member. And their jerseys are pretty damn sweet, too.
Much like Algeria, Morocco's team was started around the time of the 2008 Arab Cup. The Moroccans finished in third place, in their international debut. In Morocco, there are existing ice rinks, one in Rabat and another in Casablanca. The team featured some notable names, like Omar Ennaffati, a former Canadian pro player who would later play for Hungary internationally, and a few former major junior players, like Youseff Kabbaj. The three people who helped start the team are a set of Canadian brothers, the Harrochs; Patrick, Eric, and Marc. All three were born in Quebec, and played some level of junior hockey. Marc even played in a training camp with the Rimouski Oceanic, where he played against Sidney Crosby. The team's leading scorer, Samir Bouchaoui, was born in Sweden and played several years in Sweden's second and third division leagues. Junior teams still play in Morocco, even though there's not much news on the men's front. A national youth team has played tournaments against teams from Spain and France, and has a close relationship with FC Barcelona (yes, that FC Barcelona. They field a hockey team, too.)
We'll finish things off with another country with no national team, Nigeria. Nigeria has produced more NHLers than any other African country, with both Akim Aliu and Rumun Ndur suiting up. Jarome Iginla's family immigrated to Canada from Nigeria not long before his birth, too. Despite that, organized hockey hasn't ever become a big thing in Nigeria, mostly due to a lack of ice. Now, though, there is a permanent rink in Nigeria, in a shopping mall in Ikeja City, not far from the largest city, Lagos. There have also been portable rinks set up around the country in the past, usually as a short-term gimmick. I'll leave you with an image of one of those rinks, set up at the British Buckswood School north of Lagos. Check out the smiling guy over our buddy's shoulder. Nigeria has a large ex-pat community, and an abundance of oil money. If there's one country where a team could begin soon, I'd bet on Nigeria.
