Mount & Blade II - favorite mods

Mount & Blade II - favorite mods

Mount & Blade II - favorite mods (and basic tips to avoid crashes)

Hi,
I updated the Google Sheet with the mods that work well together for me with e1.4.0. The experience is somewhat similar to play M&B Warband with Diplomacy.
The Google Sheet is always more up to date than this post or the Steam guide.
Enjoy!

Tips to avoid crashes with mods in M&B II:

Please, remember that M&B II is still in early access. It still contains bugs and not all the features are yet implemented.
Same happens with the mods. Mod Devs are performing an incredibly work, I am seeing mods being updated five or more times a day. So,
  • Be patient,
  • Read the information of the mods in their webpages!
  • Be supportive ;-)
I would classify the origin of the crashes in the following categories:
1) Installation. Unblocking DLL.
  • Strongly recommend is to use Vortex if you download mods from "Nexus Mods". Its webpage has a guide of how to use it.
  • If you do not use Vortex, you MUST unblock the DLL of the mods. You can try unblocking them with Module Unblocker or with any of the methods described in the webpage of BannerlordTweaks.
2) Installation. Missing dependencies. Some mods need to be installed with other mods or they do not work. For instance,
3) Sort of the mods in the launcher. The mod Fixed Launcher allows you to sort the mods in the M&B II launcher. Some mods work better if they are sorted in a particular order. For instance,
4) Clean mod updates. Some mods require that you completely delete the old mod folder before updating the new version. E.g., BannerlordTweaks.
5) Game updates. Some mods require that you re-install them each time Steam updates M&B II. Until version 2.0.0, Fixed Launcher required it. It is no longer needed but other mods might.
6) Plain and simple bugs. As already said, game and mods are still in development. If you are certain that a mod is causing a crash, report to Dev providing useful information like:
  • Try to replicate the situation when the game crashes.
  • Check if the Bug has been already reported.
  • Locate the crash log and attach it.
  • Game version.
  • Mod version.
  • Conditions in what the crash happened and it is replicated.

List e1-0-4:

  1. Aregas. Castle and Town with a Horse
  2. Aregas.Save Missing Module Fix. Use latest version in GitHub
  3. Bank
  4. Battle Regeneration. Similar mod Combat Health Regen for Player and Mount
  5. Bear My Banner
  6. BetterExecptionWindow. I enable it sometimes to help me detect if a crash is due to a mod.
  7. Butterlord - Configurable Tourney Bet Limit. BannerlordTweaks also has this feature.
  8. Community Patch. Use latest version in GitHub
  9. Configurable Per Skill and Learning Multipliers
  10. Defection Overhaul
  11. Diplomacy Fixes
  12. Complete All Main Story Quests. Similar mod Freeplay (Just Let Me Play)
  13. Dismemberment
  14. Don't smelt locked weapons. BannerlordTweaks also has this feature.
  15. Encyclopedia Fix - Clicking children or wanderers jumping to wrong npc Fix. Needed for Grow Up And Work
  16. Extend the Conspiracy. Similar mod Complete All Main Story Quests.
  17. Fight Aggressively And Dont Run Away. Similiar mod Fight to the End
  18. Fighting Together Relationship
  19. Fix Siege AI. I have mixed feelings with this mod. Do ot know if it really improves or makes worse the sieges.
  20. Fixed Launcher. No longer requires to re-install after Steam updates the game.
  21. Grow Up And Work
  22. Horse Call - Call Your Horse
  23. Improved Garrisons. Similar mod Recruiter

  38. Telepathy. Similar mod Thou shalt serve
  39. Tournament Fair Armour
  40. Tournaments XPanded. "Tournament XP ModLib" add-on must be placed before main "Torunament XP" mod.
  41. Traits Mod
  42. V's Garrisons Don't Eat Nor Starve

Buggy Mods I believe Modders are going to update them:
  44. Party AI Overhaul and Commands. Requires Save Missing Module Fix. Many bugs with e1.4.0
  45. Prevent Escape. Many bugs with e1.4.0
  46. Unit Stat Fixes. Outdated e1.2.0
  47. V's Production-Scaled Daily Defaults. Crash e1.4.0

Guide history:

  • 2020-05-17. Up to e.1.4.0
  • 2020-05-10. Updated to e1.3.1 patch.
  • 2020-04-17. Updated to e1.2.0 patch.
  • 2020-04-10. Updated and added some tips to avoid crashes with Mods.
  • 2020-04-08. Updated list and included the combination of mods (ENABLED) that work for me with the e1.0.7 patch.

Todays Cards
Good afternoon!
Today I hope to get round to posting/uploading most of not all Race Meetings and have the horses analysed for you. Good luck to you all.
Please feel free to PM me for any help or advice or importantly feedback!
I have the spreadsheet for Cheltenham available and ready for anyone who wants to download by clicking here.
@17:24 Been a busy day for me today so unfortunately haven’t posted as much as I’d have liked to. Here is the Wolverhampton spreadsheet for anyone who wants to download by clicking here.
If for any reason there is a UK/Irish meeting missing that you would like me to do, I’m happy to provide you it upon request.
To make it easier for you and me I have created a pre-filled direct message down below in the following PM link should you request a certain race/meeting.
Please send me a PM.
*I am in the process of writing up an improved guide on how to use the following HorseRacing Selection Spreadsheets which I intend on attaching in due course. Please feel free to post here or PM for any help. *

Supporting me, buying me a beer & donations

For several years I have been following horse racing and I have invested untold amounts of time in making these horse racing sheets. If you use any of these sheets to assist you in your selections or just for fun, please consider a small donation which will help keep me smiling, and importantly, motivate me and keep these sheets coming. Many of you have already made me smile through your generous donations and PM’s, telling me about your winnings and also providing great feedback, and I thank you wholeheartedly.
A donation is completely optional, and can be made here. I refuse to be affiliated with any betting websites and would never make providing these sheets a paid service. I create and provide these sheets because I enjoy it and because I know how easy and quicker it makes your selection process.
Please consider donating me a beer and celebrate your days results with me or if you’re not a drinker, then how about donating me a coffee to keep me going through the evening hours (and sometimes early morning) analysing the day aheads racing, and to say a thank you for using these racing sheets that I’ve worked hard to create and constantly improve on.

Twilight's Ultimate Guide to the MLP Fandom (version 2.0)

Hello everypony, Twilight here. The My Little Pony fandom has created a lot of amazing things over the years. I've noticed though that sometimes, especially for new bronies, they can be pretty hard to find. What we need is organization! That's why some time ago I compiled a list of all the best, most popular fan works this community has created. It's been almost a year and a half now though since I created that list, and I think it's due for an update. That's why Spike and I have been working nonstop for the last 48 hours to update the list to cover a whole bunch of new fanworks that I discovered over the last year and a half! Can I please go to bed now? Anyway, just between you and me, it's possible I might have missed a few things while making this list. Obviously I can't include everything, but if you see something super-popular that I might have forgotten to include, please let me know. Now, without further ado, I give you...

Twilight's Ultimate Guide to the MLP Fandom (version 2.0)

Hello there! For whatever reason, it seems you've stumbled upon this humble guide to the My Little Pony fandom. Perhaps you're a new brony looking to see what the fandom has to offer, or maybe you're an outsider coming to see what all the fuss is about. Or perhaps you're already an experienced member of the fandom, just looking to see if there's anything important you might have missed. Whatever your reason for reading this might be, I hope you'll find this guide enlightening.
A good chunk of this guide is basically just a list of what I consider to be the best original animations, songs, comics, artwork, and stories created by the fandom. It will almost certainly be missing some things, as I definitely can't claim to have seen everything the fandom has to offer, but I'm confident I've covered a good chunk of the more popular works.
Keep in mind that unless otherwise stated, the links posted here make no attempt to avoid spoilers for new members of the fandom. The list itself should be reasonably spoiler-free, but click on one of these links without having seen every season of MLP and all the movies and all bets are off (again, unless otherwise stated). That means if you're viewing this list on Reddit using RES and you're concerned about spoilers, make sure none of the below links are expanded before proceeding. Feel free to check with another member of the brony community if you want to be sure that a particular fan work is spoiler-free before you view it. Anyway, read on for a massive list of some of the greatest works in the MLP fandom!

Animations

The MLP fandom has a number of very high quality (sometimes even as good or better than that of the original show) animations depicting all sorts of things, including original stories, crossovers with video games, interpretations of events from the show, and more.

PMVs

Often animators will set their animations to music. Sometimes music from outside the fandom, and sometimes original music from brony musicians inside the fandom. These animated music videos are referred to by those within the fandom as PMVs, Pony Music Videos.

Fully-Animated PMVs

These PMVs are composed primarily of original animation from the MLP fandom. There is some overlap here with the "animated" category above, but I tried to put all the videos where the music is a large part of the focus of the animation in this category.

Mashups & Typography

These are PMVs composed using simple motion graphics and/or carefully selected clips and screenshots from the show or other fan-works. These PMVs are much more common, as they're easier to produce than fully-animated PMVs. Here are a few select stand-outs.

Music

As I mentioned in the previous section, there are a number of artists in the MLP fandom who create original songs inspired by the show. Some of these are remixes of songs from the show, while others are entirely original.
There's lots of pretty amazing stuff here; definitely more than I can cover in this post, so here's a sample of some of my favorites. (I tried my best to cram these into just a few major categories, so sorry if the genres don't fit perfectly in all cases here. I'm open to suggestions if you've got any ideas on how to categorize these better.)

Pop (sort of)

Metal

Mashups & Remixes

Classical

Instrumentals

Musical artists

Here are a few of my favorite musical artists in the fandom, some of whom are responsible for the songs mentioned in the section above.

Analysts & Theorycrafters

Some members of the fandom find it fun to critique episodes of the show, or to spend time coming up with theories and headcanons explaining details about the world of Equestria which are not fully explored in the show itself. Here are a few of the more popular ones (including a small sample of some of their best works).

Blind Commentators

Want to relive the joy of seeing the show for the first time? Want to hear what others thought of an episode? A number of people have recorded themselves watching MLP (and related fan works) for the first time (i.e. "blind"), and sharing their thoughts with you as they watch.

Art

There's really so much great content in this category that I can't even begin to compile a comprehensive list of "the best". Below is a small sample of artwork the fandom has created. Beyond that, I suggest you check out what's on DeviantArt and branch out from there. I also have my own collections of my favorite artwork of canon and non-canon characters on DeviantArt which you're free to check out.

Comics

Some of the artists in the community have used their skills to create comics about the show. Some of these are random silliness and gags, while others feature original stories.

Character Blogs

These are basically blogs where the featured characters respond to questions from the readers. Try a few, you'll get the idea.

Longform Story Comics

Shorts

Fanfictions

And of course, like just about every other fandom in existence, MLP has a number of fanfictions written about it. I personally haven't explored this area of the fandom too much, but here are a few works others have frequently recommended to me. For discovering more stories, FIMFiction.net is a good resource, along with some of the reviewer sites and groups out there like Seattle's Angels and the Royal Canterlot Library.

Games

A number of creators have teamed up to create full fledged video games based on the show. For discovering more games and mods, right now Equestria Daily is probably your best bet.

Mods

Fansites

Trying to find more awesome pony content? Looking to talk with other bronies? There are all sorts of places on the web for that!

Parodies

Some animators have created parodies of the original show. Lots of random humor and crazy shenanigans here. If you've ever seen any fan-created "abridged series" of other shows, you should a pretty good idea of what these are.

Memes

There are a are number of popular memes in the fandom. I don't necessarily consider these to be "top quality" animations or photos (though some of them are pretty funny), but nonetheless they're important to understand in that they give you context for understanding cultural references and inside jokes in the fandom.

Background Ponies

Throughout many episodes in the show you'll often see random ponies placed in the background for the purposes of filling out a crowd or livening up the town. They're basically nameless "extras". Except, thanks to the fandom, they're actually not nameless. In fact, most of these random ponies have names and backstories given to them by the MLP fandom. Here are a few of the more well-known background Ponies:

Official content you might not have seen

Aside from the show itself, Hasbro has released a few original comics, animated shorts, and songs which tie in to the actual show. While these aren't technically fan-created, I figured I'd mention them here anyway just to make sure you didn't miss them.

Equestria Girls Animated Shorts

Rainbow Rocks Prequel Shorts

Rainbow Rocks Encore Shorts

Friendship Games Prequel Shorts

Frindship Games Deleted Scenes & Bloopers

Legend of Everfree Bloopers

No shorts this time, just bloopers.

Comics

Music

International Opening/Closing Themes

Several versions of the MLP theme song from other countries feature lyrics and tunes completely different from their English counterparts.

The Hub Promos

These are a series of commercials The Hub did to advertise the show.
The above is a small selection of some of the best commercials. See here for a full list.

Books

There are also a number of storybooks licensed or published by Hasbro. Some contain fully original stories, while others are adaptations of existing MLP movies.
The list below only includes books authored by writers for the actual show. If you include other officially licensed books there's actually a lot more, but most of those are targeted towards younger children and aren't particularly interesting...

Game

There's actually an official free-to-play (with microtransactions) MLP mobile game created by Gameloft.

Money & Makeup (AKA How to Afford Your Addiction)- CCW

After several [SRS] comments on this MUACJ thread, it was suggested that I put together a post regarding makeup and budgets for this upcoming Text Tuesday over at /MakeupAddiction I am VERY hesitant to make that post because I think it will go over about as well as a fart in church. So I thought I would post it here first, for all of you lovely ladies to read and, yes, give CC on it. Do you think it's good? Bad? Should I post it? Shouldn't I post? Am I a horrible person for suggestion people need to learn how to set a budget? Tell me, I can take it! So, with out further adieu, here's my post (and yes, it's rather long...sorry!)....
Last week there was a post entitled "Hey MUA! How do you fund your addiction?" It was a good post filled with lots of comments, some helpful and some not. As someone who works in the financial services sector, it got me thinking that perhaps a post about figuring out a budget might be helpful. I know some people are going to find this post controversial, and that’s fine but the idea of this isn’t to shame any of you over how much you spend on your makeup. Instead, it’s meant to help you be smarter about how you spend your money and give you an idea of how much you can afford to spend, guilt free, on makeup or whatever else you want each month.
In order to figure out that magic number you need to set a budget for yourself, which should be based on your take home pay each month. Since I have no way of knowing how money you make each month, for the purposes of this post, I am going assume a median weekly pay $608.50 USD. On average, there are 4.3 weeks in a month so rounding down to 4 (because who works 1/3 of a week?) gives us a $2,434.00 USD in monthly take home pay.
From that $2,434.00 you’re going to immediately take 15% off the top for taxes. That leaves you with $2,068.90 to start paying your bills in the following order (at the end of this post is a list of references for how I arrived at these numbers):
That leaves you with $158.18 per month for you to spend, however you want, guilt free. Note: this doesn’t factor in credit card payments or putting money into savings. Ideally, you’ll want to save SOME money each month so you can build up an emergency fund and/or nest egg.
Anyway, back to the $158.18. You can use this money on whatever you want…makeup, clothes, dining out, betting on horses, your stamp collection, etc . Keep in mind if you spend MORE than this, you essentially borrowing from your future budget. If you go over budget one month, you need to subtract that overage from the next month. If you spent $175 this month, then you’re spending money for next month is only $141.36. It stinks, but it’s called living within your means.
So that means you need to ask yourself some tough choices every time you go shopping. Is the stuff you want to buy a want or a need? Do you already own something similar? Can you wait until there’s a coupon or sale to buy it? It seems ridiculous, I know…but trust me. It’s better than racking up thousands of dollars in credit card debt. How so, you ask? Using the average credit card debt of $2,682 (for Millenials), your minimum monthly payment would be $107.28. Assuming that you stopped using your credit card and it had an average interest of 16%, it would take you 104 months (8.67 years) to pay it off! In addition, it would only leave you with $50.90 of guilt free spending money every month…and that’s not a lot.
I understand that was a lot of information to take in, so here are some key things to consider and/or remember:
I know this was A LOT of information, but I felt it was important information that needed to be shared and hopefully you found it somewhat helpful!
Now, as promised above here’s where I got all of my numbers & data:
TL:DR: Figure out how much your take home pay is each month, subtract your bills and whatever amount is left...that's how much you can spend on your makeup addiction, per month.

Money & Makeup (AKA How to Afford Your Addiction)- Cross Post From /r/muacjdiscussion

I posted this over another make-up related sub and it was suggested that I also post it here. If they were wrong, and it doesn't belong here, please let me know and I'll happily remove it!

Why I got to write up internal audit policy revision

I saw an old email about this, and I thought it would be a good read
My phone is just ringing along, ringing a song, side by....wait, it is ringing.
Me: Howdy, this is ITGuy, how can I help you today?
Manager: Hey, I need passwords for all of my employees.
Me: That's a strange request, did you put that in a help request ticket?
Manager: No, I want to keep it a secret I have the logins and passwords.
Me: Yeah, I'm not comfortable giving you that information, and besides I don't have their passwords. What exactly is the purpose of this out of order request?
Manager: I need to review what they are doing, I can see they are connected to the Terminal Server, but it asks me for a password to look in on their session. I know I need their password because it worked on the one person I already knew their password.
Me: Hmmm...who did it work on?
Manager: Peabody Wilson, so you can leave him off the list of passwords, I got it already.
Check box, force change of password next login.
Me: I'm not OK with getting that information and giving it to you, you can go through my director, if he agrees, and I have something in writing, I might do it.
Manager: What do you mean 'might do it', I'm a manager, you have to do what I say.
Me: Sure, unless you've gone crazy and want me to shave with a bucket of gasoline and a match.
Manager: I'll talk to your Director then, god why do you tech guys have to be so trouble some. click
I instantly let everyone know to not give that guy any passwords, if he wants to look in mailboxes fine, proxy reports fine, but he should not be able to impersonate another employee. Even if they work for him.
Supervisor: Wait, why did you say that?
Me: I dunno, was the first alarm light that went off in my head. He can see most of thier mailboxes, he has the reports for signing in and out each day, he gets a report on their internet activity. What else could he need?
Supervisor: Good point, gotta go, Director is ringing me.
I got back to my previously SQL database maintenance and forget about it. Then I get a meeting request, and I agree, on my way by I see the Supervisor sitting at his desk.
Me: Not in the meeting?
Supervisor: I can go sit in if you need me, but you got the information.
Me: Oh thanks, leave me out to dry.
I get to my Directors office and find Manager already there, he's talking animatedly with arms all akimbo. When I open the Directors door, I hear the end of a rant.
Manager: He was disrespectful and did not even attempt to help me with my issue.
Me: Howdy, am I late?
Director: No, we were just talking, have a seat.
Me: Is this a cover my badonkadonk meeting?
Director: No, I don't think so, we just need to resolve this issue with Manager.
Manager: Just fill my request and everything is good.
Me: What's your opinion on his request? Let me add it was verbal, and he declined submitting a help request because it was a secret request.
Director: Hey, you didn't actually tell me what you wanted?
Manager looks nervous, I bet he doesn't know how this is going to go.
Manager: Well, I need a password list for all of my employees, I need to be able to monitor them closely for a while.
Director: That sounds reasonable, is there a problem doing this for him ITGuy?
Me: I have a problem with it, a big one, unless there are more details provided.
I look at the Manager, and he doesn't offer up anything.
Me: Well, he can already monitor their email, web traffic, time, and call statistics. I'm not certain what else he needs to have access to that he can't already get through firmly established channels.
Director: What else do you need to get from your staff other than that?
Manager: I need to monitor some of them visually, I think they are goofing off and claiming trouble with some customer support calls.
Director: Can you give him that without the passwords?
Me: Sure, not a problem, I can't make it secret though, they will get a prompt to allow a second viewer in the RDP session.
Manager: But with the passwords they don't get a popup correct?
Now who in the heck told him that?
Me: Not exactly, I can disable the prompt and let you shadow them without their password. But it isn't exactly something covered in the policy manual.
Manager: Yes it is, it's stated that we can review their performance at any time, no questions asked or complaints allowed.
Me: Not really, that covers in person review, it's pretty clearly stated in the segment in our policy manual.
Manager: Semantics, you're just picking at strings, you don't have any reason not to give me the passwords.
Me: I told you, get that guy I point at my Director to OK it, and I'll do it.
Manager looks at the Director, the director looks at me, and I shrug.
Director: Get him the passwords, and lets be done with this.
The Manager grins at me, and starts to step around me to leave the office.
Director: You make the request in writing, if not in the help request system.
Me: In the help request system, because I'm going to log it when you give it to me in writing.
Manager sneers at me and leaves the room. I start to follow him, and Director tells me to hold up.
Director: Why did you make an issue of this?
Me: What he wants to do is not covered by company policy, it might be a matter of interpretation, of nitpicking the details. But lawyers love the details. And he's got some employees that sure over anything. I heard a rumor about one of his guys suing a girl scout troop for breaking a flower pot.
Director: Do I need to run this buy the lawyers?
Me: I don't know, I've covered my ass, if you like your ass in that chair and out of court, I'd recommend some covering as well. Let me know what the lawyers say.
I knew at the time that what he was doing wasn't a bad thing, but he did have a few employees that loved the details. And his actions were not covered by signed company policy we have to read every year. I decided to cover my butt further by auditing his activities very closely, which was covered by policy
A week goes by and nothing happens, then on the second week there is a storm cloud hanging over my part of the building. I get into the office, and Supervisor is waiting to catch me at the door. He directs me to the VP of Ops office, I sigh, sit down my coffee cup and head up to the electric chair.
VP: What were you thinking when you gave him this access?
Me: I didn't want to, I explained why I didn't want to give it to him, Director signed off on it, and I have the help request he entered in triplicate. Along with about 2000 pages of audit trail of every activity that he took over the past week. So what exactly is the problem?
VP: He let it slip to one of his supervisors, and they spread it around, because he didn't tell them not to say anything apparently. And I think this lies at your feet, you're the one that enabled him to do it, he couldn't have gotten the access without your help.
Me: Yes he could have, he just didn't want to get it from the horses mouth, he wanted to be sneaky about it. He could have requested the password from whoever he wanted to spy on and they would have been required to give it to him. Then anything he did spying on them would have been covered by policy. He only screwed up by not informing them they were being monitored. How many of them are suing us?
VP: None, but 5 of them quit...well, they took sick leave with little notice. It's the same as quitting, this is the most busy 3 weeks of the year, and he's down 1/3 of his staff. Wait, why did you say how many are suing us?
Me: I'm thinking they have grounds for harassment case under state law, that big case last year about that creepy guy monitoring his staff at their homes, unannounced, set precedence. Of course I'm not a lawyer, I'm just the enabler in this equation.
VP: Go, but stay at your desk and in this building, I have to call some people.
He grabs his phone and starts dialing even before I stand to leave the room. Director is standing down the hallway, and waves me over to speak to me.
Director: You were right, how bad is it?
Me: Not to bad, if they had sued first thing when they found out, they would have corn-holed someone around here. Think with them taking sick leave and not being sick, are they sick?
Director: I don't know, I haven't been interrogated yet.
Me: If they aren't sick, then they can be terminated immediately for false leave claims. They've done that a couple times when people have been stupid about it. If you can catch one of them on the golf course today, that might help the situation.
Director: How much cover do you have for your backside? Is it enough for me to share some?
Me: Sure, i'll tell them everything I did was with your OK.
Director: What did I do?
Me: You told me to audit all his activity to make sure he didn't screw someone over, I figured he was going to, plus I have it on pretty good authority that he didn't find any 'goofing off' on the server sessions he was spying on outside of policy.
Director: Who's good authority?
Me: Mine, if they were goofing off during working hours, it was on their machines at home. We can't do web reports on their browser activity unless it's on the network, and their remote machines just pinhole in to a remote desktop server. So they could have netflix, facebook, playboy, badonkadonk.com running in a second window and it would never show up.
Director: Damn it, why didn't I tell him no.
Me: It wouldn't have stopped him, he would have gotten his director to sign off on it, and you guys side together on everything.
He looks down at his cell phone, then back up at me. After a dry mouth swallow, he heads to the VPs office.
I wander back to my little desk and drink my little err.. big coffee. I decide to see how pissed off his 5 people are, and they are all too sick to respond apparently. A few hours later, I'm called up to the board room, and I have to explain to the lawyer that hates me that I only did what I was told. I did record every action he took with the special privileges he had gotten from me. That made Manager squirm a little, I explained how Director okayed all of the extra auditing I was doing, and he had reservations from the beginning about the outcome. That wasn't necessarily the whole truth, but Director was a pretty good guy most of the time.
Lawyer: Did you advice Manager that what he was doing was in violation of company policy?
Me: Yep.
Lawyer: Did you agree to give him the permissions?
Me: I did the work, I never agreed with him getting them.
Lawyer: How did you obtain the permission for his staff? Do you keep them on file?
Me: I never saw a single password, I had someone in the department get all their passwords, and I didn't read any of the passwords when I protected the spreadsheet with a password. This someone had no idea why he was getting them, all he could tell him was they were needed for some project.
Manager: You sure you didn't keep any of the passwords?
Me: I have the excel document still, but I've never opened it and looked at the passwords.
Manager: How are you going to prove that?
Me: Because I was auditing myself the entire time I was auditing you, and each of your employees.
Manager: Wait so you have a detailed record of everything we all did over the past 8 days?
Me: Yep, 2000 pages of audit logs, it's really nice having all that data to play with if I need it.
Manager: So you were auditing them without notifying them that you were doing so?
Me: No, I told them I was doing it, in the same email you received letting you know I was doing it. I got a read receipt from you, and all of them, surely you actually read what the message said.
Lawyer: I may need a copy of these audit logs, if this goes to court.
Me: Are you defending the employees or the Manager?
Lawyer: What do you mean?
Me: Well, if you are defending the employees I can see you wanting those audit logs, but if you are defending the Manager, I'd think you'd want to leave them lying in the corner forgotten.
Lawyer: I'm not defending anyone, I'm evaluating the companies liability in this matter. That's all I wanted to ask you, you can go.
Me: You might want to get him some water, he looks a little green around the gills. I point out how sickly looking Manager had become
The company wasn't sued, 4 of the 5 people came back to work the next day, the 5th was off for a week then he turned in his two week notice. At his exit interview I showed him the audit logs, his read receipt, and told him I would know if he gave anything away. He had downloaded a huge amount of test files in his last two weeks, and they weren't on his computer when he brought his workstation back into the office. The Manager got demoted, and one of his Supervisors got promoted, Manager left a few months later. He was not a happy camper during those few months, the Supervisor now Manager rode him like a rented mule.
And at the next round of budget meetings, I got to present the policy changes to the Exec VP. Then he gave them to the board for review and they signed off on the changes. Now I have a license to NSA anyone in the company, but rarely do more than the Time Report, Web Activity Report and Call Stats Report.

/r/buffy comics mega-thread (all commonly asked comic questions in one thread!)

This post is designed to be a one-stop place to find out everything you need to know about the comics. If a user asks a question on /buffy relating to the comics, please direct them to this post first.
Please do not post questions about the comics in here. If your question has not been answered is this thread, please make your own post or if there's a change you would like to see, please message mods direct!
What do I need to have watched/read?
You really want to have watched both Buffy (seasons 1-7) and Angel (season 1-5) in order to read any of the comics, to fully understand what is going on.
The only real exception to this is Fray, but it is still highly recommended you finish both Buffy and Angel.
Will I enjoy the comics?
Season 8, it's different. Season 8 is a massive difference to the TV show. Because there is no creative budget (if you want to draw a massive snake, draw it) Joss really let himself go with it. He does admit that he got a bit carried away with season 8, but I still loved it.
It is recommended that you try and separate the show from the comics in terms of the overall feeling. If you read season 8 of Buffy thinking you're going to have the same dynamic as seasons 1-7, you're not going to fully appreciate it for what it is.
Season 9 is a lot more "back to the roots" as you would say. It's still out there and fresh, but it's far less of the massive blockbuster that was season 8. Some people don't like the comics because "It doesn't feel like the show I know and love" but there again, you can't carry the dynamics of a TV show over to something on paper. You have to create something different and tweaked. One thing that makes Buffy is the language used by characters. But the same dynamic that worked on TV, wouldn't translate to comics in the exact same way.
Season 8 was generally considered by many to be a stepping stone. They needed to find their footing and discover what worked and what didn't. Some of it was hit, some were miss.
What do /buffy think about the comics
Big thread.
may contain spoilers.
What is the general plot of Buffy season 8?
What order should I read the comics?
What are volumes, library editions, omnibuses?
What are one-shots all about?
How can I purchase the comics in the most minimalist way?

Animated comics?
Where can I get the comics for free
We do not condone linking to any torrent sites. Linking to illegal downloads will be removed and if a user repeatedly posts illegal links, they will be warned. Please see the section below on how to get samples of Buffyverse comics.
A great place to support Buffy and get to read the comics for free are Libraries. They often have Buffy (you'd be surprised) and other Whedonverse comics that you can loan out just like any other book. These are a great place to test the waters and see if the comics are something you would like to get into.
ComiXology (who supply both Buffy and Angel comics) have a free 30 day trail of their "unlimited" service. You can find out more details about it on the ComiXology website. Note, this is only for their US site, at the time of writing.
In addition to this, free samples of comics can be found on Darkhorse and IDW
Where can I buy the comics?
What's canon? How is canon defined and what comics are canon and what aren't?
Canon, refers to the official continuation of a story by the original creator(s). In terms of Buffy, canon is considered on the basis of if Joss Whedon was personally involved in the story. This can mean, as a writer, as a supervisor (Spike: After the fall is a good example), or someone Joss has hired to create a story for them.
Non canon is anything that did not have any input from Joss Whedon. Any writer can make a novel, comic, story about Buffy or Angel, as long as they have the license (which Joss does not control).
Full article containing what's canon and not here!
Post season 12/what's happening with BOOM studios?
As Dark Horse Comics’s Buffy license expires at the end of 2018, Boom! partnered with 20th Century Fox, which holds in a minority stake in the comic publisher (taken from Buffy wikia).
The first comic will come out January of 2019.
What is the reading Order for the new BOOM comics?
Why can I not find Buffyverse comics (excluding the reboot from BOOM!) anywhere?
This is because DH and IDW no longer have the license to be able to print issues.
Your best bet is to try used book stores, eBay, local comic book stores etc.
Some places are still stocking DH and IDW comics, but once they're gone, they won't be able to re-stock.
BOOM! could, at any point, decided to reprint the existing DH and IDW Buffy comics. However, since they are currently running their "rebooted" comic version, I really wouldn't hold your breath on this being anytime soon.
BOOM Legacy editions for both Buffy and Angel comics
BOOM have annouced that they are going to be releasing an Angel "Legacy Edition".
BOOM have annouced that they are going to be releasing a Buffy "Legacy Edition".
it is important to know that the stories included in the legacy editions, are not yet confirmed. This could mean some non-canon stories (depending on what you define as canon), are being included.

Some general news, and a word on 1.6

First off I'd like to congratulate the previous game server host for its shitty treatment of our latest problems. They sent me an email today writing that I haven't answered in 72h and closed my ticket. Funnily enough THEY are the ones who have not answered in 72h. I've checked twice now, but nevermind... That case is closed and we've moved on to a more reliable host.
1.6
I bet everyone's pretty excited about 1.6 and what it's bringing. Unfortunately we haven't gotten a release date on it.
I have decided that we will be using a completely new world. Before you start yelling at me, here's why:
Now, don't be afraid, I will provide the world to be downloaded but I will also move the most important builds of people with worldedit. However, I do feel that we could use a completely clean slate and perhaps focus our intentions on something as a group. I will, of course, coordinate if people did decide upon it. It'll be much easier with the new mumble server that we got for free.
I have to limit xp/mob farms and stripmines this time around. This new world is going to get too cluttered otherwise. The people behind them simply need to build them together.
I will also stop reimbursing lost/stolen items!
That's all for now!
Edit: Dear God you guys. Some of you are taking this whole xp/mob farm thing like I would be personally attacking you, or as if it were some serious political debate about the future of a country!
The mentioned "limit", we will decide on when it's actually time. There's no reason to put up a friggin spreadsheet of where/why/how now. You all seem to read into what I'm saying way too much... But if you still feel I'm crippling your game experience in some way, then this server might not be for you. I do wish that people stay, but holy hell, it shouldn't be so hard.
It's the last thing I'm going to say now, and I will not be answering any more when it comes to this particular matter.

Thanks for the interesting facts every day, Dan! How do you always come up with new ideas/amazing tidbits of information every week day without fail? Do you think it would ever dry up? Finding stuff isn't all that hard any more. I have 20-something pages of things saved in Instapaper, a bunch of other bookmarks, and readers send me things pretty much every day.
The USCB estimates that the world population exceeded 7 billion on March 12, 2012. Now I Know?
You better get crackin then, I just discovered your newsletter and I want to be dazzled. ok
You got any... ummm... cat facts? Hotel which let you rent cats for the night... unfortunately, the new owners ended that.
The time the CIA wired a cat to be a spy
A French ritual where they burned live cats
How making cats glow green can help fight AIDS
That time when Garfield woke up to find that Odie and John were hallucinations, and he's actually screwed.
How's that? I won't send them via text message though.
We need a Now I Know dedicated to cat facts. I'll subscribe everyone to it. \ It's called reddit.
What about raccoon facts? Gives you phone-rabies.
Redditor for 7 years. Checks out. Why would a guy who writes about facts start with a lie?
Trust but verify. Very Wikipedia of you.
More Russian than Wiki. Now I know!
How do you feel about your content being reposted? Is it ok because it's spreading cool knowledge or are you upset that people don't get it directly from your email subscription which brings you money? Seriously, PLEASE POST THEM ALL THE TIME. Eventually, someone may point out where it came from or how they learned about it and more and more people will know about Now I Know. And more and more people get to learn the cool facts. And you get karma! I don't need the karma! Take it! The money, whatever, I'll make up for it in new subscribers. Don't worry about it, repost like crazy!
This is actually how I found out about you and I am now a subscriber, as is my dad! SEE!
Also: he's 34. Follow-up, thanks to your Neyer link: HOF or no? He's got a little Koufax in him, doesn't he? He'd get my vote, but they don't give me one.
Does this same logic apply to Chris Carpenter or do you think he makes another superhuman comeback? Screw the Cardinals.
How do you feel about the mets losing to the lowly Marlins? They always lose to the Marlins.
Do you ever visit /baseball, or whatever subreddit is for the mets? I'm a regular-ish in /baseball.
What were the reasons you began Now I Know in the first place? The second one I've answered elsewhere and for the third one, just look me up :) I write nights, weekends, and on the train to work. I wrote today's on the train ride on Wednesday, and had enough time left over to accidentally fall asleep. And my train isn't that long!
Do you have any worries that you will one day run out of facts to send out? 1) I had created a sports wiki-blog hybrid with a few friends in 2005 -- ArmchairGM, if you're interested, but it's long dead. A few years later, was working with some other guys on a sports email newsletter. My job on both was to grow readership/audience, and I did an OK job in the first but a terrrible job in the second. Email was really hard, and I wanted to beat it.
(If you don't mind me asking) What do you do for a living and, if its a demanding job, where do you find the time to research and write each article? 2) I think I could have a pretty big Twitter following (by the way, I'm @DanDotLewis) if I focused on something like strange facts or baseball or social media stuff, but I didn't want to focus, because that's not fun. But I like the idea of having an audience where I can share ideas, and I'm willing to work at something to create that. A bunch of stuff came together at the same time, and I realized that people were actually interested in this collection of interesting but generally useless facts that I seemed to gravitate toward. So I turned them into something.
I did see that you answered my second question here. I hope to hear when you reach 100,000 subscribers! I hope to get there!
Have you ever been so blown away by a story that you were sure it wasn't true until you did more research? But I have been in the other situation many, many times. The most notable was about a month ago. CS Monitor ran an article about the "world's last telegram" which was going to happen sometime in July, and a few other places picked up the story. That's fantastic, right?
Likewise, have you ever printed a story that later turned out to be false? If so, how did it happen? As far as I know, I've never printed something which turned up false.
Hey Dan. I write BrokenSecrets.com, a similar concept to yours. I started about 8 months before you but you've grown yours so much more; congratulations on your readership and the book deal, that's a ton of work! Cool.
You could almost have a separate snopes style "trivia debunking" site. Yeah but Snopes does a good job of that, other than the annoying popup ads.
Any thoughts on making it more mobile friendly? I definitely skip over reading them sometimes when I'm on my phone on my morning commute and I know I'm not the only one. Constantly. The problem is the ads. I need the ads to make this economically viable for me -- it's not and likely will never be a full-time job, but it has to make me something -- and that's what harms the mobile experience. I'm trying to get into subbable and seeing if I can crowdfund this, but I think that's a longshot.
For mobile: stack the content with no sidebar like below: Title Horizontal Ad (Leaderboard) Content Bonus Fact Horizontal Ad (Leaderboard) Extras Yeah, I need to look into this more. Thanks!
I'd have no problems paying $1 for the mobile app. This could offset the loss of ads. Maybe. I'd rather just make it mobile-friendly and go reader supported, like PBS/NPR model-y. Maybe one day I'll have the you-know-what to try that.
You may want to also think about creating an app. I've considered it. It'd have to do something different.
Hi, Dan. Thanks for making my inbox more enlightening every day. Unfortunately, I don't think I have a real favorite. I have a lot I didn't particularly like for one reason or another, and those end up often being some of the more popular ones, which just goes to show I have really poor taste ... or something.
What do you think is your most interesting Now I Know story? One that's forthcoming in the book. And no, that's not some ploy to get you to buy it :) I just remember, during the editing process, really liking how it read and what it was about, and I'm typically the type who HATES reading what I myself wrote.
Your whole AMA is a ploy to buy your book... Actually, it's to get you to subscribe to the email newsletter.
I completely fell for it. Hah.
Hey Dan! I love reading your emails every morning. Have you ever found facts that you've purposely not shared with the world because it's too disturbing or dangerous? Is there a limit to what you're willing to say? Not because it's too disturbing or dangerous (although honestly, I'm not all that interested in stuff like "how to make a bomb!" or whatever). But I've had to not talk about a few things involving sex and drugs because email spam filters kill those.
For example, there's this thing called Koro -- here's a Wikipedia entry -- where people freak out because they inexplicably begin to think that their penises are going to shrink and ultimately disappear. There's no way to write that without either using the word penis over and over again, or being really childish and using a ton of euphemisms for the word penis.
So I didn't publish it (or write it up, for that matter).
I would love a spinoff of NIK with factoids like this. I currently read your daily e-mail on my phone without any problems and always figured most of your revenue came from the Amazon affiliate links. Perhaps a 99¢ app where you could split your articles into categories and not have to worry about spam filters? Maybe. Spinoffs aren't really that good b/c I'd have to find the time.
You could use phallus. Eh.
Not that I begrudge you any time off for what is a free (and much appreciated) service, but why do you take all of the holidays off? I try to be apolitical, but I don't shy away from politics, if that makes sense. That's not why you read and honestly, that's not why I write. But the crazy part: they took opposite sides! One guy wrote to say that "apparently believing" is garbage, and there's no way Japan would have surrendered, and I shouldn't give lip service to such myths. The other guy was shocked that I'd accept that the Japanese weren't about to surrender, when they so obviously were. Sometimes, you can't win. 3) I take the holidays off because I need the occasional day off like anyone else, and it helps prevent me from burning out. It's easy to just have a blanket policy, too.
2) Just to avoid spam filters, as noted above. I've talked people who murder children. There's not much worse out there. I've talked ABOUT people who murder children (in the newsletter), not TO them. Like, this week, the world's worst loophole one.
How'd that happen? I know you are a lawyer - was this part of your work there? I was an employment lawyer, I didn't touch murder.
What can you tell me about horse-sized ducks? They surprisingly come out of pea-sized eggs.
And taste delicious.
Hi Dan! Love the daily facts, I start every morning off by reading your emails. Thanks! I answered this elsewhere, but I'll add something I forgot: I really, really like to write. A few nights ago, I was frustrated with this Bud Selig/A-Rod BS, and ended up writing about 3,000 words on why Selig's also to blame for all the steroid use. That's a lot of words.
My question is what was your main motivation for starting to write these daily essays? (And I may not even publish it.)
Thanks! (subscriber, here). Not to go too far afield, but, yes, drugs saved baseball after the strike. Also, Ted Turner is responsible for the tolerance of drug abuse in baseball - he let Pascual Perez (sp?) come back. Drugs totally saved baseball after the strike.
So, would you let likely steroid users in the HOF? What about Pete Rose and Joe Jackson? I'd put most likely steroid users in the Hall, yes. I would not put Rose or Shoeless Joe in.
I have been a subscriber for about a year and your opinion on Pete Rose nearly swayed me to unsubscribed. Consider yourself warned mister. Hah.
Do you get bored of having to provide something every day? Do you write them weeks in advance and then have a few weeks off? I don't get bored but I do burn out here and there. I don't write them far in advance at all, usually a day or two. Monday's isn't written yet and I haven't picked a topic.
Do you make your entire living from it? This is a side project -- I don't make anything close to a full-time salary from this.
Thanks for replying! Is there a sense of panic and of letting people down when you're not sure of the topic, or you're running late? Oh, terribly.
Thanks for sending out NIK - it reminds me that there's too much fascinating weirdness out there to get too caught up in any one special-interest niche, much less my own personal woes. What other general-interest blogs or newsletters would you recommend? Are there any that you think do a good job of covering things you wouldn't? I'm sure there are a few others I read so I may end up editing this one...
Excellent resources, Dan! I've been an avid reader over the years; I always look forward to your mails. Great work... I'm hoping your book is available as an ebook download! It will be! I'll announce when on the newsletter.
Has any of your research been frustrating? I run a trivia blog myself (to verify factoids from a trivia book) and sometimes finding information can be extremely frustrating. Nope. It's been great. Really.
I don't really right up little facts. I flesh out stories about facts which I've mostly already verified. So the research process just leads to more neat things to learn about. You know when you're reading through Wikipedia and you end up in one of those rabbit holes of neat stuff? That happens to me a few times a week, and when it does, I don't feel the "holy cow I wasted SO MUCH TIME!" regret, because I just turn that stuff into email newsletters. :)
How do you find the time to answer everyones emails? I know I have emailed you a few times and you get right back to me. Most of the stuff is trivial but you still manage it. Also what is the exact number of readers you have on the email now? As of right this moment, there are 89,764 subscribers.
Replying to emails isn't a big deal -- I only get about a dozen or two a day. Most people don't bother replying, perhaps because they don't think I will :)
How fast is that number growing, I think the end of last year you didnt have that many? It comes in bits and spurts. I've been higher -- just over 90,000 -- but 88k+ is relatively new.
How long did it take before your newsletter broke even? 1) It broke even basically overnight, because the costs are pretty low. My only expenses are my server (to handle traffic spikes) and the Mailchimp fees, which are reasonable.
Hi Dan. Do you ever get ideas for your newsletters from things on reddit? Oh yeah, definitely. Especially the comments.
what now I know would you like to do but can't for some reason? I'd like to be able to tie my shoes better but I can never get that to work right.
Watch this TED talk and consider your problem solved! Huh. Go TED.
Do you get people who argue with you over your facts? How often does that happen? Rarely, unless I make a mistake ("million" when I mean "billion" happens a lot) and then there's not much of an argument.
Hey Dan love reading your emails every day when i get to work. It's pretty much my prep routine for the day haha. Have you ever thought about going on Jepordy / tried out for some sort of trivia show with your vast knowledge of facts? I don't know all that much. It's "Now I Know" -- "I," not "You" -- because I just recently learned this stuff an am fascinated by what I've discovered. I'm decent at trivia but not Jeopardy! good.
Hi Dan, thanks for the great stories in my inbox every day! I went to the amazon site and it looked like your book is not available in electronic format--are you only publishing a paperback version? If so, why? The ebook is coming out in October and we are working on getting it available as a pre-order, too. I'll announce it on the newsletter when it's up.
Hey Dan, love reading your stuff. Which one of your facts took perhaps the most research? Something that was annoyingly difficult to find enough information for? The one I wrote Thursday -- the Bambeanos one -- was horrible. Couldn't find anything about it. It's as if the Internet didn't exist in 1975 or something.
Did you ever think this would become as popular as it did, let alone enough to write a book about it? Maybe? I hoped so.
When I started off, I created a spreadsheet. My goal was to get to 10,000 subscribers before I had 365 issues written, so I could say "hey, I have 10,000 subscribers and enough content for a Fact a Day calendar, let's make one!" That was motivating but not necessarily an expectation.
I'd still like to do that, too.
What's the extra A for? "Ask me Almost Anything." That was very common at one time.
Hi Dan! Love your newsletter -- it and Futility Closet are my favorite morning diversions. Thanks! Futility Closet is awesome and I'd love for him to mention my work -- I'm a fan of his and I like when that happens. Maybe one day.
My question: Your Change.org petition to keep Google Reader running earned more than 150,000 signatures, but ultimately failed to sway them. Now that all is said and done, how do you feel about the closure? Have you found a good replacement? And how has its absence affected the way you discover new content for NIK? I've found myself using RSS less and less, which kind of sucks. I have a few readers I've tried and I need to build a new habit, but haven't yet.
Hi Dan! If you were going to write a Now I Know about yourself, what would the fact be? I have a voluntary nystagmus, which would be a really interesting thing to show everyone, but I don't know how to let you see through my eyes.
Have any of the facts you've researched changed your worldview? Are you the absolute funnest person at parties? No, and definitely not. Dear god, you know that random fact guy at parties? He's the worst, and I'm like him on crack.
Thank you for your daily emails!! it is awesome to read something interesting everyday at my job. For the sake of the question... What did you have for breakfast??? Cereal. I'm boring today. I was going to make an egg white omelet but the morning got away from me.
Why should I care about your book, or that you're using reddit to promote it? Because I have children and they need toys.
Hi Dan, thanks for doing the AMA, and I always love the cool facts every morning! How many hours a week do you spend on research, writing, etc? What's the easiest part of the process? Each issue probably takes an hour, maybe two, all said and done. So let's say five to ten hours? And that doesn't include the dozens of hours I spend thinking about it and talking about it and that kind of stuff.
Hi Dan, my housemate runs a very popular trivia night here in Australia. Have you got a curly question I could throw at him? Or is there a couple of go to questions you would use if you were running a trivia night? What animal is quoted on the side of a standard Trivial Pursuit box?
Lol, what animal is quoted on the side of the Trivial Pursuit box? Here's the answer and proof, in the only way I can find it right now (I don't know where my old copy of Trivial Pursuit is). If you want the answer, clicky clicky.
Hi Dan! I've been following your newsletter for a couple of years now.. Major fan! I just wanted to ask if this is all you do for work, or is it still a side project of sorts? Side project. Took the day off from work today to do this, though.
When I first started getting your emails, I thought it was like getting a fun Mental Floss article every day. Have you ever done work for them in the past or any work for magazines? Mental Floss is great and yes, I've worked with them. They've republished some of my article on their website. I've done the same with Smithsonian, GOOD, and a few other places which are going to get upset with me for forgetting.
I have an article in this month's Reader's Digest.
I read your daily email every morning before work, love it man, its a part of my day. My question: What was your most significant redaction? Over time you've written so many articles, I'd have to imagine there was a major mistake either due to misinformation or miscalculation. There have been a few but none that really stand out. Last week I wrote "peddle" when I meant "pedal" which changed the meaning of a bunch of things, and that was a pretty big one.
How do you feel about all the redditors that take your essays and post them to TIL for some sweet sweet karma? I LOVE IT!, as explained when you click this link.
What is your favorite cookie? Monster.
Could you unsubscribe my girlfriend from your list? It was much better when she didn't know about it and I could pretend to have come up with your awesome facts myself. No, but I can screw with her copy.
Just kidding.
No.
What was the reasoning behind your decision to not use a pseudonym for the newsletter? Have you experienced any ill consequence from that? What are you talking about? I'm really JK Rowling.
Seriously, though: Email is pretty intimate, and not in the Victoria's Secret way. You don't like it when strangers email you and you probably don't let friends/family read your email. It's a private, personal space reserved for real people. I'm a real person and I should respect that aspect, so I do by being me.
Plus it helps that I have a pretty common name and can always say "uh... must be some other Dan Lewis."
Hey Dan, Can you tell me the Number 1 tool (software or hardware) that enhances or promotes efficiency in your work? Instapaper.
Want an app? I can make you an app. Email me, dan.lewis gmail.
Dan! Huge fan. Thanks for everything you do! The personal emails you send every now and again thanking your subscribers are awesome. Thoughts on the SF Giants this year? Also, ever thought of making a trivia game? Decent team having an off-year. Happens. Impressed that Sabean didn't go full-Amaro and start buying when he shouldn't be.
I'd love to make a trivia game but it'd be easier to license one :-)
Thanks for Wheeler, by the way.
Huge fan, Dan! When did you start your mailing list? What inspired you to do so? Do you have any assistants? (Like Cecil does) thank you! June 22, 2010.
Long story, it's above a few places :)
I have a reader who edits most of them before they go out; otherwise I beg one of my brothers or a random friend on IM. I don't have an assistant and I don't have guest writers.
Great to see on your bio that you list Mets fan before lawyer or trivia buff. Do you think the Mets should have dealt Buck, Byrd, or Parnell at the deadline? If you were the GM, what offseason acquisition would you pursue most vigorously? I'm OK with the inaction on Byrd and in general -- here's why.
I'd have shopped Parnell (who I really like as a fan) heavily because relief pitchers are flighty and largely fungible. (You should see my OOTP teams.) Buck's not worth much so I didn't expect much there.
I think the Mets need to figure out the right side of the infield. 1B could be Ike, Duda, Flores... gotta pick one. If Flores can play second, where does that put Murphy? And then who is at first? And what about JV1 or EYJr, can either of them slot in at second?
I'd be unsurprised if Murph gets traded for a corner OF, they sign Shin-Soo Choo to play RF, Flores goes to 2B, Lagares sticks in CF, Ike gets non-tendered and Duda goes to first.
Bonus fact: Sandy Alderson and I went to the same barber before I moved.
Did you settle on the title of NIK fairly quickly or did it become an involved task? What were some of the other potential names you considered? Daily Brilliance, Daily Light Bulb, Daily Idea, Daily Neuron, New Neuron, Now You Know, Half the Battle, Just Got It, Got It, Ah Ha!, Just Found Out, I Just Found Out, This Just In, Now I Know, Now I Know That...
I ended up using Now I Know (obviously) and "That's Half the Battle!" as the subhead.
What sort of software do you use to write and collate your texts? Word? Directly into a CMS? Something special purpose? I write directly into Mailchimp's CMS, then copy it into a Google doc, send that to a reader who edits it for me, and put the edits back into Mailchimp. They I copy it into the Wordpress installation I have for the archives.
Hi Dan, thanks for the amazing facts that I read faithfully everyday! How, and why, did you start this newsletter? Do you have another job? A peeled orange sinks in water, an unpeeled one floats. And that's really neato.
Hey Dan, great newsletter! Do your colleagues and family know you do this newsletter? I mean to say, that how often does an acquaintance come up and say "hey, is this you?" Most all of them know, but rarely has anyone come up to me and asked if I'm the guy who writes the thing. Happened once, kind of.
Who's your baseball team? Wanna bet on a game at /CharitableBets? I got $10 says some team (I'm English, I know nothing of the sport) beats your team. Mets, and no, I don't bet on them because they're meh, and I don't bet against them because I love them.
I LOVE your newsletter! Sometimes I don't get to read them everyday and then have a little binge session to catch up. What's the weirdest way you've come across material for your articles? I learned about this one from the side of a truck. Really. Kenneth Cole had this delivery truck parked near my office and it had a paragraph of text on it, so I walked through traffic to read it and it turned out to be pretty interesting.
Wow, i didn't know about this! Thanks. BTW how much are those facts reliable? I cite my sources, don't make stuff up, and haven't gotten anything terribly wrong yet, so I'd say, very.
How much time do you spend on one email/fact in a day? About an hour or two. Sometimes much longer, but that's rare.
Thanks for your daily emails, I truly enjoy reading them before starting my day. Keep up the good work man! I guess my question is do you plan on doing any "series" emails of NIK? Like a week of facts about a certain lengthy subject? That would be pretty cool. I considered it early on and decided against it. Main reason is b/c a large part of the readership may not be interested in the topic, and that's five days in a row of non-interest.
What makes an interesting fact interesting? I have a good eye for it. Mostly surprise, as if it's fiction ... but of course, it's not.
What is your process to find/discover new interesting facts? The process at this point is to just be insatiably curious while reading stuff.
Did you have any idea of how big this thing would get? Did you ever think it would be this popular? Nope. And nope. But I hoped it would. Someone asked this above and I had thought/hoped I could turn it into a Fact a Day calendar.
I was a bit surprised when I received a response to my email I sent you, and we've had a bit of back and forth a couple times. It made me feel kinda famous by proxy, even if you haven't featured anything I've suggested. And feel free to email whenever!
Regarding the book, is it articles from the archives, entirely new content, or a bit of both? 50/50. Fifty stories from the archives, fifty which are new to the book. Same with the bonus facts, give or take.
