There's a TON of content out there on SEO - guides, articles, courses, videos, scams, people yelling about it on online forums, etc etc..
Most of it, however, is super impractical. If you want to start doing SEO TOMORROW and start getting results ASAP, you'll need to do a TON of digging to figure out what's important and what's not.
Now, if you guys haven't seen any of my previous posts, me and my co-founder own an SEO/digital marketing agency, and we've worked w/ a ton of clients helping them go from 0 to 200k+ monthly organic traffic.
So we wanted to make everyone's lives super easy and distill our EXACT process of working w/ clients into a stupid-simple, step-by-step practical guide. And so we did. Here we are.

Step #1 - Technical Optimization and On-Page SEO

Step #1 to any SEO initiative is getting your technical SEO right.
Now, some of this is going to be a bit technical, so you might just forward this part to your tech team and just skip ahead to "Step #2 - Keyword Research."
If you DON'T have a tech team and want a super easy tl;dr, do this:
If you’re a bit more tech-savvy, though, read on!

Technical SEO Basics

Sitemap.xml file. A good sitemap shows Google how to easily navigate your website (and how to find all your content!). If your site runs on WordPress, all you have to do is install YoastSEO or Rankmath SEO, and they’ll create a sitemap for you. Otherwise, you can use the following XML Sitemap tool.
If you want to learn more about what’s a sitemap for, click here. Otherwise, just put one up on your website and read on.
Proper website architecture. The crawl depth of any page should be lower than 4 (i.e: any given page should be reached with no more than 3 clicks from the homepage). To fix this, you should improve your interlinking (check Step #6 of this guide to learn more).
Serve images in next-gen format. Next-gen image formats (JPEG 2000, JPEG XR, and WebP) can be compressed a lot better than JPG or PNG images. Using WordPress? Just use Smush and it’ll do ALL the work for you. Otherwise, you can manually compress all images and re-upload them.
Remove duplicate content. Google hates duplicate content, and will penalize you for it. If you have any duplicate pages, just merge them (by doing a 301 redirect) or delete one or the other.
Update your ‘robots.txt’ file. Hide the pages you don’t want Google to index (e.g: non-public, or unimportant pages). If you’re a SaaS, this would be most of your in-app pages. Here’s how to create a Robots.txt.
Optimize all your pages by best practice. There’s a bunch of general best practices that Google wants you to follow for your web pages (maintain keyword density, have an adequate # of outbound links, etc.). Install YoastSEO or RankMath and use them to optimize all of your web pages.
If you DON’T have any pages that you don’t want to be displayed on Google, you DON’T need robots.txt.

Advanced Technical SEO

Now, this is where this gets a bit more web-devvy. Other than just optimizing your website for SEO, you should also focus on optimizing your website speed.
Here’s how to do that:
Both for Mobile and PC, your website should load in under 2-3 seconds. While load speed isn’t a DIRECT ranking factor, it does have a very serious impact on your rankings.
After all, if your website doesn’t load for 5 seconds, a bunch of your visitors might drop off.
So, to measure your website speed performance, you can use Pagespeed Insights. Some of the most common issues we have seen clients facing when it comes to website speed and loading time, are the following:

Step #2 - Keyword Research

Once your website is 100% optimized, it’s time to define your SEO strategy.
The best way to get started with this is by doing keyword research.
First off, you want to create a keyword research sheet. This is going to be your main hub for all your content operations.
You can use the sheet to:
  1. Prioritize content
  2. Keep track of the publishing process
  3. Get a top-down view of your web pages

Now that you have your sheet (and understand how it works), let’s talk about the “how” of keyword research.

How to do Keyword Research (Step-by-Step Guide)

There are a ton of different ways to do that (check the “further readings” at the end of this section for a detailed rundown).
Our favorite method, however, is as follows…
Start off by listing out your top 5 SEO competitors.
The key here is SEO competitors - competing companies that have a strong SEO presence in the same niche.
Not sure who’s a good SEO competitor? Google the top keywords that describe your product and find your top-ranking competitors.
Run them through SEMrush (or your favorite SEO tool), and you’ll see how well, exactly, they’re doing with their SEO.
Once you have a list of 5 competitors, run each of them through “Organic Research” on SEMrush, and you'll get a complete list of all the keywords they rank on.
Now, go through these keywords one by one and extract all the relevant ones and add them to your sheet.
Once you go through the top SEO competitors, your keyword research should be around 80%+ done.
Now to put some finishing touches on your keyword research, run your top keywords through UberSuggest and let it do its magic. It's going to give you a bunch of keywords associated with the keywords you input.
Go through all the results it's going to give you, extract anything that’s relevant, and your keyword research should be 90% done.
At this point, you can call it a day and move on to the next step. Chances are, over time, you’ll uncover new keywords to add to your sheet and get you to that sweet 100%.

Step #3 - Create SEO Landing Pages

Remember how we collected a bunch of landing page keywords in step #2? Now it’s time to build the right page for each of them!This step is a lot more straightforward than you’d think.First off, you create a custom landing page based around the keyword. Depending on your niche, this can be done in 2 ways:
  1. Create a general template landing page. Pretty much copy-paste your landing page, alter the sub-headings, paraphrase it a bit, and add relevant images to the use-case. You’d go with this option if the keywords you’re targeting are very similar to your main use-case (e.g. “project management software” “project management system”).
  2. Create a unique landing page for each use-case. You should do this if each use-case is unique. For example, if your software doubles as project management software and workflow management software. In this case, you’ll need two completely new landing pages for each keyword.
Once you have a bunch of these pages ready, you should optimize them for their respective keywords.
You can do this by running the page content through an SEO tool. If you’re using WordPress, you can do this through RankMath or Yoast SEO.
Both tools will give you exact instructions on how to optimize your page for the keyword.
If you’re not using WordPress, you can use the Content Analysis tool. Just copy-paste your web page content, and it’s going to give you instructions on how to optimize it.
Once your new landing pages are live, you need to pick where you want to place them on your website. We usually recommend adding these pages to your website’s navigation menu (header) or footer.
Finally, once you have all these new landing pages up, you might be thinking “Now what? How, and when, are these pages going to rank?”
Generally, landing pages are a tad harder to rank than content. See, with content, quality plays a huge part. Write better, longer, and more informative content than your competition, and you’re going to eventually outrank them even if they have more links.
With landing pages, things aren’t as cut and dry. More often than not, you can’t just “create a better landing page.”
What determines rankings for landing page keywords are backlinks. If your competitors have 400 links on their landing pages, while yours has 40, chances are, you’re not going to outrank them.

Step #4 - Create SEO Blog Content

Now, let’s talk about the other side of the coin: content keywords, and how to create content that ranks.
As we mentioned before, these keywords aren’t direct-intent (the Googler isn’t SPECIFICALLY looking for your product), but they can still convert pretty well. For example, if you’re a digital marketing agency, you could rank on keywords like…
After all, anyone looking to learn about lead gen techniques might also be willing to pay you to do it for them.
On top of this, blog post keywords are way easier to rank for than your landing pages - you can beat competition simply by creating significantly better content without turning it into a backlink war.In order to create good SEO content, you need to do 2 things right:
  1. Create a comprehensive content outline
  2. Get the writing part right
Here’s how each of these work...

How to Create a Content Outline for SEO

A content outline is a document that has all the info on what type of information the article should contain Usually, this includes:

Outlines are useful if you’re working with a writing team that isn’t 100% familiar with SEO, allowing them to write content that ranks without any SEO know-how.
At the same time, even if you’re the one doing the writing, an outline can help you get a top-down idea of what you should cover in the article.
So, how do you create an outline? Here’s a simplified step-by-step process…
  1. Determine the target word count. Rule of thumb: aim for 1.5x - 2x whatever your competitor wrote. You can disregard this if your competition was super comprehensive with their content, and just go for the same length instead.
  2. Create a similar header structure as your competition. Indicate for the writer which headers should be h2, which ones h3.
  3. For each header, mention what it’s about. Pro tip - you can borrow ideas from the top 5 ranking articles.
  4. For each header, explain what, exactly, should the writer mention (in simple words).
  5. Finally, do some first-hand research on Reddit and Quora. What are the questions your target audience has around your topic? What else could you add to the article that would be super valuable for your customers?

How to Write Well

There’s a lot more to good content than giving an outline to a writer. Sure, they can hit all the right points, but if the writing itself is mediocre, no one’s going to stick around to read your article.
Here are some essential tips you should keep in mind for writing content (or managing a team of writers):
  1. Write for your audience. Are you a B2B enterprise SaaS? Your blog posts should be more formal and professional. B2C, super-consumer product? Talk in a more casual, relaxed fashion. Sprinkle your content with pop culture references for bonus points!
  2. Avoid fluff. Every single sentence should have some sort of value (conveying information, cracking a joke, etc.). Avoid beating around the bush, and be as straightforward as possible.
  3. Keep your audience’s knowledge in mind. For example, if your audience is a bunch of rocket scientists, you don’t have to explain to them how 1+1=2.
  4. Create a writer guideline (or just steal ours!)
  5. Use Grammarly and Hemingway. The first is like your personal pocket editor, and the latter helps make your content easier to read.
  6. Hire the right writers. Chances are, you’re too busy to write your own content. We usually recommend using ProBlogger or Cult of Copy Job Board to source top writing talent.

Step #5 - Start Link-Building Operations

Links are essential if you want your content or web pages to rank.
If you’re in a competitive niche, links are going to be the final deciding factor on what ranks and what doesn’t.
In the VPN niche, for example, everyone has good content. That’s just the baseline.The real competition is in the backlinks.
To better illustrate this example, if you Google “best VPN,” you’ll see that all top-ranking content pieces are almost the same thing. They’re all:
So, the determining factor is links. If you check all the top-ranking articles with the Moz Toolbar Extension, you’ll see that on average, each page has a minimum of 300 links (and some over 100,000!).
Meaning, to compete, you’ll really need to double-down on your link-building effort.
In fact, in the most competitive SEO niches, it’s not uncommon to spend $20,000 per month on link-building efforts alone.

Pro Tip

Got scared by the high $$$ some companies spend on link-building? Well, worry not!
Only the most ever-green niches are so competitive. Think, VPN, make money online, health and fitness, dating, CBD, gambling, etc. So you know, the usual culprits.
For most other niches, you can even rank with minimal links, as long as you have top-tier SEO content.
Now, let’s ask the million-dollar question: “how do you do link-building?”

4 Evergreen Link Building Strategies for Any Website

There are a TON of different link building strategies on the web. Broken link building, scholarship link building, stealing competitor links, and so on and so on and so on.
We’re not going to list every single link building strategy out there (mainly because Backlinko already did that in this article).
What we are going to do, though, is list out some of our favorite strategies, and link you to resources where you can learn more:
  1. Broken link building. You find dead pages with a lot of backlinks, reach out to websites that linked to them, and pitch them something like “hey, you linked to this article, but it’s dead. We thought you’d want to fix that. You can use our recent article if you think it’s cool enough.”
  2. Guest posting. Probably the most popular link building strategy. Find blogs that accept guest posts, and send them a pitch! They usually let you include 1-2 do-follow links back to your website.
  3. “Linkable asset” link building. A linkable asset is a resource that is so AWESOME that you just can’t help but link to. Think, infographics, online calculators, first-hand studies or research, stuff like that. The tl;dr here is, you create an awesome resource, and promote the hell out of it on the web.
  4. Skyscraper technique. The skyscraper technique is a term coined by Backlinko. The gist of it is, you find link-worthy content on the web, create something even better, and reach out to the right people.

Link-Building Case Study: SaaS Marketing

“So, what’s this ancient link-building tactic, Nick?”
I hear you asking. It must be something super secretive and esoteric, right?
Secrets learned straight from the link-building monks at an ancient SEO temple…
“Right?”
Well, not quite.
The tactic isn’t something too unusual - it’s pretty famous on the web. This tactic comes in 2 steps:
  1. Create EPIC content
  2. Promote the HELL out of it
Nothing too new, right?
Well, you’d be surprised how many people don’t use it.
Now, before you start throwing stones at us for overhyping something so simple, let’s dive into the case study:
How we PR’d the hell out of our guide to SaaS marketing (and got 10k+ traffic as a result).
A few months back when we launched this blog, we were deciding on what our initial content should be about.
Since we specialize in helping SaaS companies acquire new users, we decided to create a mega-authority guide to SaaS marketing (AND try to get it to rank for its respective keyword).
We went through the top-ranking content pieces, and saw that none of them was anything too impressive.
Most of them were about general startup marketing strategies - how to validate your MVP, find a product-market fit, etc.
Pretty “meh,” if you ask us. We believe that the #1 thing founders are looking for when Googling “saas marketing” are practical channels and tactics you can use to acquire new users.
So, it all started off with an idea: create a listicle of the top SaaS marketing tactics out there:
  1. How to create good content to drive users
  2. Promote your content
  3. Rank on Google
  4. Create viral infographics
  5. Create a micro-site
...and we ended up overdoing it, covering 41+ different tactics and case studies and hitting around 14k+ words.
On one hand, oops! On the other hand, we had some pretty epic content on our hands. We even added the Smart Content Filter to make the article much easier to navigate.
Once the article was up, we ran it through some of our clients, friends, and acquaintances, and received some really good feedback.
So, now we knew it was worth promoting the hell out of it.
We came up with a huge list of all online channels that would appreciate this article:
  1. /entrepreneur and /startups (hi guys!). The first ended up loving the post, netting us ~600 upboats and a platinum medal. The latter also ended up loving the post, but the mods decided to be assholes and remove it for being “self-promotional.” So, despite the community loving the content, it got axed by the mods. Sad. (Fun fact - this one time we tried to submit another content piece on /startups with no company names, no links back to our website, or anything that can be deemed promotional. One of the mods removed it for mentioning a link to Ahrefs. Go figure!)
  2. Hacker News. Tons of founders hang out on HN, so we thought they’d appreciate anything SaaS-related. This netted us around ~200+ upvotes and some awesome feedback (thanks HN!)
  3. Submit on Growth Hackers, Indie Hackers, and all other online marketing communities. We got a bunch of love on Indie Hackers, the rest were “eh”
  4. Reach out to all personal connects + clients and ask for a share
  5. Run Facebook/Twitter ads. This didn’t particularly work out too well for us, so we dropped it after 1-2 weeks.
  6. Run a Quuu promotion. If you haven’t heard of Quuu, it’s a platform that matches people who want their content to be shared, with people who want their social media profiles running on 100% auto-pilot. We also got “meh” results here - tons of shares, next to no likes or link clicks.
  7. Promoted in SaaS and marketing Facebook groups. This had awesome results both in terms of traffic, as well as making new friends, AND getting new leads.
  8. Promoted in entrepreneur Slack channels. This worked OK - didn’t net us traffic, but got us some new friends.
  9. Emailed anyone we mentioned in the article and asked for a share. Since we mentioned too many high profile peeps and not enough non-celebs, this didn’t work out too well
  10. Emailed influencers that we thought would like the article / give it a share. They didn’t. We were heart-broken.
And accordingly, created a checklist + distribution sheet with all the websites or emails of people we wanted to ping.
Overall, this netted us around 12,000 page views in total, 15+ leads, 6,000 traffic in just 2 promotion days.
As for SEO results, we got a bunch of links.
A lot of these are no-follow from Reddit, HackerNews and other submission websites, but a lot of them are also pretty authentic.
The cool part about this link-building tactic is that people link to you without even asking. You create awesome content that helps people, and you get rewarded with links, shares, and traffic!
And as for the cherry on top, only 2 months after publishing the article, it’s ranking on position #28.We’re expecting it to get to page 1 within the new few months, and top 3 within the year.

Step #6 - Interlink Your Pages

One of Google's ranking factors is how long your visitors stick around on your website.
So, you need to encourage users reading ONE article, to read, well, the rest of them (or at least browse around your website). This is done through interlinking.
The idea is that each of your web pages should be linked to and from every other relevant page on your site.
Say, an article on "how to make a resume" could link to (and be linked from) "how to include contact info on a resume," "how to write a cover letter," "what's the difference between a CV and a resume," and so on.
Proper interlinking alone can have a significant impact on your website rankings. NinjaOutreach, for example, managed to improve their organic traffic by 40% through better interlinking alone.
So, how do you do interlinking “right?”
First off, make it a requirement for your writers to link to the rest of your content. Add a clause to your writer guidelines that each article should have 10+ links to your other content pieces.
More often than not, they’ll manage to get 60-70% of interlinking opportunities. To get this to 100%, we usually do bi-annual interlinking runs. Here’s how that works.
Pick an article you want to interlink. Let’s say, for example, we decide to go with this article on business process management we wrote for Tallyfy.
The goal here is to find as many existing articles where ‘business process management’ is mentioned so that we can add a link to the article.
Firstly, Google the keyword ‘business process management’ on the Tallyfy domain using the following query:
Site:[Your Website] “[keyword]”
In our case, that’s:
Site:tallyfy.com “business process management”
You’ll get a complete list of articles that mention the keyword “business process management.”
Now, all you have to do is go through each of these, and make sure that the keyword is hyperlinked to the respective article!
You should also do this for all the synonyms of the keyword for this article. For example, “BPM” is an acronym for business process management, so you’d want to link this article there too.

Step #7 -Track & Improve Your Headline CTRs

Article CTRs play a huge role in determining what ranks or not.
Let’s say your article ranks #4 with a CTR of 15%. Google benchmarks this CTR with the average CTR for the position.
If the average CTR for position #4 is 12%, Google will assume that your article, with a CTR of 15% is of high quality, and will reward you with better rankings.
On the other hand, if the average CTR is 18%, Google will assume that your article isn’t as valuable as other ranking content pieces, and will lower your ranking.
So, it’s important to keep track of your Click Through Rates for all your articles, and when you see something that’s underperforming, you can test different headlines to see if they’ll improve CTR.
Now, you’re probably wondering, how do you figure out what’s the average CTR?
Unfortunately, each search result is different, and there's no one size fits all formula for average CTR.
Over the past few years, Google has been implementing a bunch of different types of search results - feature snippet, QAs, and a lot of other types of search results.
So, depending on how many of these clutter and the search results for your given keyword, you’ll get different average CTRs by position.
Rule of thumb, though, you can follow Backlinko’s data on average CTR by position
As for the “how” to do CTR optimization, first off, grab our CTR optimization template.
Use a scraping tool like Screaming Frog to extract the following data from all your web pages:
Delete all the pages that aren’t meant to rank on Google. Then, head over to Google Search Console and extract the following data for all the web pages:
Now, check what your competition is doing and use that to come up with new headline ideas. Then, put them in the Title Ideas cell for the respective keyword.
For each keyword, come up with 4-5 different headlines, and implement the (seemingly) best title for each article.
Once you implement the change, insert the date on the Date Implemented column. This will help you keep track of progress.
Then, wait for around 3 - 4 weeks to see what kind of impact this change is going to have on your rankings and CTR.
If the results are not satisfactory, record the results in the respective cells, and implement another test for the following month. Make sure to update the Date Implemented column once again.

Step #8 - Keep Track of Rankings & Make Improvements On-The-Go

You’re never really “done” with SEO - you should always keep track of your rankings and see if there’s any room for improvement.
If you wait for an adequate time-frame after publishing a post (6 months to a year) and you’re still seeing next to no results, then it might be time to investigate.

[Case Study] My first affiliate. Have I found a good niche?

Hey Folks!
I've always loved reading other people's case studies on this sub and since I'm considering starting a new project, I thought I'd give it a shot.
This is an initial evaluation of a niche product I’m considering starting an authority site around. I’m looking for feedback on if you think this is a niche worth investing in, and if so, thoughts on the plan.
My Background
I’m a mom in my late 30’s who has worked in general marketing roles at tech companies for 15 years. I don't have direct content marketing experience but understand the fundamentals.
Eight years ago I got my first dose of affiliate goodness. I bought a domain name based on Crossfit merchandise, pointed it to a Zazzle affiliate site, and got my first $30 check in the mail from affiliate sales two months later.
Cha-CHING! 💥
Yes, times have changed. And yes, I was illegally squatting on a trademarked domain. But that first check gave me a rush I’ll never forget.
Fast forward a decade later…now that I just had my first child I desperately yearn to run an online business that allows me to work on my own terms.
That’s why I’m here.
The spirit of this initial project is to:
Goal: Create and grow a few affiliate sites that together generate $4k month in profit in two years. Target $2k/month for this site.
The Opportunity As a first time mom I recently stumbled upon a niche product and product category that peaks my interest. It’s something I have first hand experience with and has solid affiliate bounties.
Think of it like a 9to5 Mac or Mattress Nerd, but for an emerging category with one major leader (for now). This site will go deep into that one product and eventually expand.
Evaluation 🧐
To evaluate this niche I asked myself the following five questions:
1. Will this site create unique value for people?
I don’t want to create something the world doesn’t need. Initial research and my own experience shows there are multiple active online forums seeking answers around this product not readily available on google.
I’m also a member of the target demographic so I understand the challenges we face. Parenting is a continuous steep learning curve. Solving the issues that come up becomes the most important thing in your mind, thus, great content providing answers should create value for people.
Answer: Yes
2. Does this category have significant search Volume?
Not sure. This type of analysis is new to me...
The average monthly search volume per Google Keyword planner is from 40,000 - 400,000 searches (their “low" to “high" ranges). The bulk of that volume is competitive branded keywords. Without those, we’re looking at 9,000 - 94,000 searches/month among 30 body and long tail keywords.
This is just after a super brief keyword brainstorm using mostly google autocomplete. It probably under-estimates the amount of keywords I could go after.
Answer: Maybe? It seems like a decent amount of traffic, especially since affiliate bounties are strong. Which brings us to...
3. Is this a high margin product?
Answer: Yes
4. Will I be able to compete?
The main competition is the official company blog, mainstream press coverage (ex: Vogue.com) and reviews from various parent bloggers. There’s no single 3rd party site that goes deep into this one product or product category. I want to be that.
The company blog is good. Robust, clear, ranks high consistently. But there are content gaps. It doesn’t reflect some of the “off brand” issues that arise around the product (hacks, reviews) that people also want answers to.
Next I’ll do a deeper competitive analysis with the Moz toolbar to identify the specific medium or low keywords to go after first.
Answer: Probably
5. Am I passionate about this niche?
As a new mom who recently faced and solved the challenges this product category solves I feel passionate enough to get started. Moreover I’m hopeful that early wins and -- fingers crossed -- eventual traction, will lead to a deeper more sustained commitment over time.
Answer: Enough. But I'm not going to lie: I'll require signs of success for sustained commitment.

How to learn digital marketing - 99+ resources and 8+ learning paths

Hey guys! With the whole self-isolation thing going on, it’s an awesome time to learn a new skill (or ten). Me and my bud (Nick) basically self-taught ourselves digital marketing over the past 6 years, and have been hoarding a bunch of cool guides and resources.
We recently decided to turn all of it into a giant resource package on how to learn digital marketing. Thought you guys would appreciate it!
So, here we go...

Before we begin, here’s how to learn digital marketing

Before we dive deep into the guide and start teaching you individual digital marketing channels, let’s cover some basics.
First things first - you need to decide which channel to start with.
If you have a knack for writing, we’d recommend going with Content Marketing or Copywriting. On the other hand, if you’re more analytics-oriented, go for Search Ads or PPC.
As a given, you DON’T have to learn all the channels. You can just pick one that you like, and specialize in it!
Once you’ve decided on which channel to roll with, you should also establish a learning methodology.
As with most things in life, reading on digital marketing won’t take you far. You need to also put everything into practice.
We usually recommend going with one of these 4 options:
  1. Create a test learning environment. Basically, you create a website for a basic product or service (heck, even a blog would do!), and start applying whatever you learned about digital marketing to get leads and customers. Even if you have ZERO budget, this can be an interesting learning experience. And yes - it’s possible to start w/ a zero budget.
  2. Get an internship. This can be a bit painful if you’re in the middle of your current career, but hey, swallow the pride. If you do your best, you’ll be doing some real work 6 months after the internship.
  3. Offer a local business to help them with marketing for free. Find a business you think you can help in your area and reach out to them!
  4. Create an affiliate blog. Pick a niche, create an affiliate blog, and start pumping out some content. This is mainly relevant if you want to learn SEO or content marketing.
And here’s what you SHOULD NOT DO:
Read a guide or two, buy a course, whip out your own website, repurpose the course and start pretending to be a marketing expert to potential clients.
There are way too many people doing this as-is. Please stop! You’re setting yourself up for failure.
You’d be surprised how many people we see on Facebook Ads groups asking, “Hey guys, I closed my first client, now how the heck do I deliver on my promises?”
...Now that we got that out of the way, let’s get to learning some digital marketing!
The ones we’re going to cover in this guide are:
Quick Note
We took some liberties with splitting up some channels. For example, search ads fall under PPC, but since they require different skills/knowledge than most PPC channels, we split them up.
Finally, Copywriting is also NOT a digital marketing channel. However, it’s an essential skill that helps with literally any other channel, so we decided to include it to the list.

Learn Content Marketing

This one’s our bread and butter.
Most traditional advertising channels are focused on directly selling a product. If you turn on the TV, you’ll see a TON of ads for this product, or that product or service.
Content marketing is a form of indirect advertisement.
The idea here is, instead of directly pitching your product to your target audience, you create content (article, video, infographic, etc.) around the problem your product solves, and pitch that instead.
To make this a LOT clearer, here’s a practical example.
Let’s say you’re a marketing agency that specializes in helping SaaS companies with their digital marketing (meta, right?).
Instead of directly running ads yelling “We help SaaS companies!” you create a mega-guide on the topic and advertise that.
...Which is what we did.
We created a mega-guide to SaaS marketing and promoted the hell out of it all over the web. This netted us around ~10,000+ traffic and 15+ leads in the first week, and we STILL get traffic to the piece, 2 months later.
We even posted it on Entrepreneur and got around 600 upboats.
Sweet, right?
Now, you’re probably wondering, is this option better than just running ads to your service/product?
Yes, yes it is. Here’s why:
  1. It’s free (ish). The only resources it took was our time to write the post, edit it, and promote it. Ads, on the other hand, can be super expensive.
  2. It builds your brand authority. Who’d you trust with your marketing? A random guy that popped up on your Facebook newsfeed, or the guys that wrote the most comprehensive guide to SaaS marketing you’ve ever read? Exactly!

Content Marketing Learning Path

For example, let’s say you’re a project management software. Would it benefit you if you popped up #1 when people Google for your keyword?
Yes, yes it would. You’d be getting highly qualified leads for your software every day, for free, with ZERO ad spend.

Learn Search Ads

Search ads are basically paid SEO.
Instead of waiting for months or years to rank on your keyword, you can start bidding on it instantaneously.
Seen the “Sponsored” results on top of your organic searches on Google?
Those are search ads.
Of course, unlike SEO, they’re not free. You have to pay for each click you get.
The way search ads work is as follows. Each time someone Googles any keyword, Google holds a small auction.
Each advertiser on the keyword has a specific bid indicated on their account.
The one that bids the highest, gets the highest ranking.
Now given, this is a gross oversimplification, but that’s the general idea behind it.

Yep. The thing w/ search ads is, it’s easy to learn, hard to master. Going through Google’s course on its own is enough to give you everything you need to know about search ads.
From then on, you need to apply what you learned into practice, and learn from there (and Google any problems/questions you might have).

Learn PPC

PPC stands for “pay-per-click” and is an umbrella term for pretty much ALL online advertising types - Facebook ads, LinkedIn ads, Reddit ads, and all other social media ads.
In this case, we decided to focus on Facebook Ads, mainly for 2 reasons:
  1. It’s the most popular advertising channel out there. There’s a lot more demand for Facebook ad specialists, and you can get a lot more done with it
  2. If you learn how to do Facebook ads, all other channels follow the same principles
So, let’s get right into it!
The way PPC works, in a nutshell, is as follows:
  1. You need to figure out the right targeting
  2. And you need to come up with the right ad creatives (both ad image and the ad copy)
Given, this is a LOT more complex than you’d think. The main responsibility for a PPC specialist is to test dozens of targeting options, mixed with dozens of ad creatives, and find what gets them the best results.

Technically, yes. For the purpose of this guide? Nope.
Social Media Marketing (SMM) as a whole is anything that has to do with marketing on social media (as the name suggests).

Buying Alienware in Australia (and getting a deal)

So, you want to buy an Alienware rig, but don't want to pay the "Australia tax"? Hate that we don't have access to the deals and refurbs in the volume the US site does? I get it. Me too, so here's what I did.
I wanted the Area-51m. I went with the base spec, an upgraded to the 2070 card, and the 144hz screen. Total cost was about $4,600. I got it for about $3,600 using a couple of apps and a couple discount codes. Here's how:
You will need: A browser you don't use much (I used firefox). The "Honey" plugin for that browser. The "Shopback" plugin for that browser. A Dell Staff Purchase account from your employer. Time to wait until a sale (like now).
So here's how they come together. I suggested using a new browser because the apps will probably track a whole load of stuff you don't want them to, but use them on your primary browser if you like.
As an example, I'll use the base A-51m on the site at the moment. The moment you open the dell site, the ShopBot app will probably ask you to activate it. don't do that yet. It's not a huge deal if you do, it's just a pain in the arse.
$3,999.01 base price. With the upgrade to the Nvidia 2070 and the 144hz G-Sync screen, that comes to $4,819.00. I didn't bother with RAM upgrades, because it's really easy to do for a lot cheaper by buying the RAM separately (Amazon.com.au is actually OK for this, especially with HyperX, plus it's eligible for shopbot too — more on that later).
  1. The only hard part is the staff purchase deal. If you work in a place that purchases their computers from Dell, you'll probably have an account. You need the company account number to register, and they'll send an email to your work email address. Once that's done, you'll get monthly 5% discount codes that stack with any other discount code on the site. Currently, the code is EPP5. Copy that down, and move on.
  2. Now, we go to the cart and hit up the honey app. Open your cart that your computer is in, add whatever you want. Once you get to the cart, if you've installed the honey app, it'll pop up with "Coupons Found". Just hit "apply Coupons". If you had ShopBack active, it'll now go inactive, so there wasn't much point to that. Yet. So Honey goes through the codes, trying to apply them. As of right now, the best code is SPRING15, which is the DELL deal code for the month, but sometimes it might be an affiliate code. You can click on the Honey icon in your browser toolbar to open the list of coupon codes available. So now you're at $4096.15.
  3. Now add the staff deal code, EPP5. You'll notice it stacks with the other code. Nice right? So no we're down to $3891.34.
  4. Now, click the ShopBack icon in your browser toolbar, and it'll open up a menu. It'll say "Up to 12% Cashback on Dell". For laptops, it's more like 5%, but hey, we'll take it. Activate it.
So now, you pay for your computer. If it feels icky, just look at the bit that says "Total saved". For this example, it's $927.66. Not too shabby.
Once that's done, in the next day or two, you'll get a call from the Staff Purchase team validating your discount. They'll send you an email to your work email address, which you just confirm, then it's all good. If you faked the discount code, I'm not sure what will happen. If you give it a try without the registration, let me know how you go.
So you've laid out $3891.34 for a laptop that costs $1k more. But wait, there's more. The ShopBack app. It will take 3 months to clear your cash back. Yep, that sucks, but on the flip side, you'll get about $200 back from this purchase. I've waited that long to post this, just to make sure it worked. I got the payment approved yesterday, and it was in my paypal account the next day. You can get it sent to your bank account directly, but I don't think it's a great idea to put those detail in there. Might be safe. Might not. No need to risk it.
So your total outlay is about 75% of the sticker price. Not bad, especially in Australia. You could always use the cash back to go towards the RAM upgrade too, which will pay for almost all of a 2X16GB HyperX 2400Hz kit from Amazon.com.au. You'll also get cashback through ShopBack here too. U-mart, MWave, PC Case Gear, CPL and MSY are all a little more expensive for RAM for some reason. Could just be volume.
So kick on and enjoy. I really like my A51m so far. The price is still slightly higher than a comparable MSI laptop, but the cooling is just brilliant. Rarely hits 60C. A bit noisy, but all up, no regrets.

Day 3 of Affiliate Marketing Help

Finding a Niche
No preampble. Here are the easiest ways to find a niche. Keep in mind, this is eccomerce centered but can apply to affiliate marketing as well.
The best way is to rehash stuff where others are being successful unless its saturated.

1. Flippa

How to see profitable sites:
  1. Go to https://flippa.com/search?filter[property_type]=website
  2. Increase min monthly profit filter to $100 or $1000, status "Sold".
  3. Choose monetization as Adsense, Affiliate, Dropship or whatever you prefer.
Voila, you see websites which actually made profits. No BS.
Now, you could either filter by keyword (which I don’t prefer as it checks the domain name) or by broad niche if you have anything on your mind.
If you further want to get keywords, plug one of those domains into Ahrefs and you get a load of them.

2. Amazon:

Ecommerce sites are the best to search for niches. They list so many products that leave you wondering that they could exist.
On the site directory (http://www.amazon.in/gp/site-directory/ ), you could find the categories of products sold on Amazon. If you want to start an Amazon affiliate site, you could drill down to the category you are interested in. Later, check their best sellers (https://www.amazon.com/Best-Sellers/zgbs) to see where you are interested in.
When you are checking out Ecommerce sites for niche ideas, make sure to pick a category and include "Best" or "Reviews" alongside the category name to find some golden nuggets.
Example: best or reviews.

3. AliExpress:

If you are into Dropshipping, see a load of niches at Alibaba (https://www.aliexpress.com/all-wholesale-products.html) to make the best choice before starting out a dropshipping store. Wow, you must see an overwhelming number of categories to choose from. Now, do your keyword research digging these categories and pick an easy and low competition one.

4. Pinterest:

One of the best websites to drive traffic is pinterest and it can be one of the best to research different niches. Head over to pinterest.com and check out their categories. If you click on a particular category, you can also find suggestions of different sub-categories. On clicking on a subcategory, you see pins related to it. It’s a great method to get popular products judging by the number of pins or shares they got.
Now, when doing keyword research, you can just input “ reviews” and get some easy and worth-pursuing niches. Popular pinterest boards are examples of great broad niches.

5. Ebay:

Whether you are starting a new dropshipping or Ebay arbitrage business, you need to see Ebay Trending Products (https://explore.ebay.com/). That gives an idea of what sells.
Apart from that, the Ebay Sitemap(https://pages.ebay.com/sitemap.html) contains tons of niches or categories to go with. If you click on a particular category, you can again drill down to a specific sub-category can pick a micro-niche if it suits.

6. StumbleUpon:

Another site which can help you drive hell lot of traffic like pinterest. Stumbleupon has a list of all its interests (https://www.stumbleupon.com/discoveinterests/all) and that serves as a great place to start drilling down to a particular popular niche.
Basically, see what people are interested in and also what interests you.

7. Google Trends:

If you are not checking out Google trends (trends.google.com), you are missing out a lot. You can get a lot of trending long tails from here.
Here is an example:
Suppose you plan to launch an affiliate site. Head over to Google trends and enter your seed keyword. Select your target country and see the data of past 12 months. You could see how the product is popular in terms of search volume. Look for related searches provided by Google and their trends. You could get some popular and trending products related to your niche.
You could get some products with growing popularity and less competition. Those are the ones which can rank easily.

8. “Best” or “Top X” product review sites:

This is one of my best strategies of keyword and niche research.
If you want to launch an affiliate site and you have ever done some keyword research, you will come across these sites. I just termed them as “best”.com and TopX.com. So, they are basically authority websites which review and publish best X no of products to buy in a niche. They have tons of pages across several or probably all categories of Amazon or products from other affiliate networks.
If you find those sites, head over to their sitemap and there you are! Your quest is over :D

If you want to grab some low competition keywords, I would also insist you to go and check some lesser popular sites.

So, are you wondering: How can I rank if these authority sites are ranking already? Yes, you can. It could be a bit difficult though.
These sites are basically ranking because of their domain authority. What you need to do is build niche relevance around a micro niche and strengthen your home page (become a vampire and suck on their success) Your site is solely based on gas stoves or kitchen accessories or sports goods. So, it has more relevance to a search query.
These sites are an awesome source to get quick niche/keyword ideas.

9. Footprints:

Footprints are another great source of niche and keyword selection. Whether its affiliate or dropshipping, you can search for relevant footprints and spy on the sites.

Example:

If you want to build a shopify store on sunglasses: “powered by Shopify” + sunglasses is your footprint.
Similarly, for spying on amazon affiliate sites, you could use: “amazon affiliate disclosure” + keyword.
It purely depends on what you want to build and come up with relevant footprints. These not only give you keyword ideas but also website designing and product selection ideas.

10. Trend Hunter (https://www.trendhunter.com):

I love this site because it has tons and tons of list posts. Whether you want to start an affiliate site or adsense blog, this is a great source of keywords.
Whatever niche you want to be in, it lists almost everything. Well, it also lists all the trending products and you could have an idea of what people want.

11. Twitter:

Don’t just lurk around twitter. If you see what’s trending on twitter daily, you could come up with some great product ideas someday.
Otherwise I agree, its just random BS, politics and celebrities. ;)

12. Eyes and Ears:

Probably the most important tools to give you great ideas. Keep your eyes and ears open around you and try to see everything from a marketing angle.
I’m sure you will land across some great ideas.

Keyword Research:

Finding a niche is concentrated randomness. After that, keyword research is your next step.

Requirements:

Semrush Kwfinder Keywordseverywhere (chrome addon) Scrapebox Keyword fest (Free Software) Moz (Free toolbar) Seo quake (Free Toolbar) Proxies (i use google public proxies)
Create a folder name KEYWORD RESEARCH under that create sub-folders name it as:
Elimination Tournament Semi-Final Final
Follow Guide:
1.) I first find my competitor ranking keywords using Semrush, I then export those top ranking keywords and filter out via volumes, remove keywords below 1000-US searches.
2.) I will be with some just 10 keywords now, So I get some list of my competitor's competitor on Semrush I follow the point 1 now. so I have about 100 keywords on my excel sheet ( Remove duplicates) and save them in Elimination Tournament folder
3.) Now ONLY Pick short tail, one-word or Two-Word keyword and put them on Scrape-Box keyword scraper and Append A-Z, Select level 3 and press scrape it should come up with approx 50k -80k keywords. ( import it and save those in excel in semi-final folder)
*Import Long tail keyword which was left over in Elimination Tournament folder to semi-finals folder, because you can't scrape long tail keywords, you get inappropriate keywords.
4.) Now open Keyword fest and paste same one-word or Two-Word keyword,
Follow these settings on Keyword fest: *Checkmark (Generate keywords from suggestion results) *Set keyword suggestion chapter depth = 3 *Checkmark (Keyword suggested must start with original keyword *In settings milliseconds between quires - 1500ms - 2000 Import those keywords into the corresponding spreadsheet in semi-finals folder. Now you will be with more than 100k - 200k keywords. DONT FORGET TO remove duplicates
5.) Open Keywordseverywhere Do a bulk check 10k keyword per session, Ignore searches below 1000. Trim unrelated keyword or outdated keyword, Copy all that to the new spreadsheet called keywordseverywhere in semifinals folder. (in settings change search volumes to your corresponding countries)
Optional: I use keywordsdb.com, if any short tail keyword search volume is high I use it as a seed keyword.
6.) Now I import those keywords to Kwfinder. 700 keyword per session allowed, Now I look for keyword competitive below 25 and not below 1000 US searches, I mark them as favorite and list them kW-finder, at last, I import to semifinals folder into the new spreadsheet and name it as kW finder.
7.) Now I open new spread-sheet in semi-final name it as intitle check, eg - intitle:"abc"inanchor:"abc" in google search and record total web results
8.) open scrape box and open the addon called google competition checker paste those in title lines and press start, after the check finish, I will remove all of the values with a value of over 300,and save this keyword in FINALS Folder.
9.) With SEO quake and Moz toolbar installed, I search keyword manually and I see these
MOZ: DA below 20 PA below 10
Seo QUOKE: DS below 6 TS below 29 LD below 200
there should min 2 or 3 sites of these rules to processed forward. *some PBN links may be hidden and 301 redirect, check before writing content
10.)Use those related search keyword in your content, it doesn't need search volume or check metric just use in content.
Tip: Always check searches on Google Keyword Planner though there are tons of tools. You will get the actual data. If you are not allowed to use it, run an adwords campaign for one of your sites and change to manual bidding with low per click value. That should allow you to use it. :)
Last note:.
Million $ Idea which everyone knows and no one implements:
  1. Pick an already profitable site.
  2. Copy the same structure, same target keywords or add your own twist.
  3. Plug into Ahrefs, find its RD and its whole history.

Using Free Tools To Replace Pricey ahrefs/SEMRush Subscription

I'm sure some other people are doing this as well. Maybe you can help me add the few missing pieces to my toolkit. Right now, I'm very happen with the set of free tools I'm using. I used to have an ahrefs subscription and it is a fantastic tool, but I don't think in my solo operation I am really getting $99 worth of use out of it. I've been tightening the belt a bit lately, so I have been without it for a few months.
Here are the main tools I'm using:
I used to just do most of my keyword research within ahrefs, and it is great for that. It makes it quick and easy, but it's not much harder to do with these free tools. And so far, I feel like I'm finding better results than I was just relying on the ahrefs interface.
Here's an example. Let's say I'm in the pet grooming niche. First I need to find some good long-tails. I want to write some articles about dog grooming brushes. I'll go to the Keyword Shitter and enter "dog grooming brushes" as a seed keyword. It takes awhile to run, so if you want to dig seriously deep, go make some coffee or something and come back in a bit. You'll have tons of keywords. With the Keywords Everywhere extension, you'll get an output that looks something like this: https://i.imgur.com/5Cw1YiM.jpg
Now this is great. Tons of of great keywords with relevant volume. But it's a mess, and there is no way to sort it! Not to worry. Hit the "Export CSV" button. Open the CSV in your favorite spreadsheet editor (I'm using OpenOffice for this example.) Make sure you have your "Separator Options" set to "Separated By: Comma" in the dialog that should pop up when you open the CSV file.
Once it's in the spreadsheet, we can actually sort it and start doing something with this data! In my case, I want to see the terms with the top search volume. I go to the "Data" menu at the top, select "Sort" and select "Sort By: Vol -- Descending." Now we've tamed that Keyword Shitter madness and have something like this: https://i.imgur.com/Ey9LOhz.jpg
At this point I'm ready to pick out a few keywords and look at some SERPs. With the tools I have installed, I can pretty rapidly do competitor analysis and look for keywords at the same time, all from the Google results page.
So, let's just check the SERPs for "dog grooming brushes." This is what I get: https://i.imgur.com/yIO2LfO.jpg
Let me call your attention to a few things. Directly below the Google search bar is the Keywords Everywhere data. This is straight from Google Keyword Tool. Below that, you see ahrefs toolbar data which is calculated using their own metrics. These are always a bit different from each other, but between the two of them I get a decent general sense of search volume.
Off to the right we have the "Related Keywords" info from Keywords Everywhere. This is mostly just the "related searches" from the bottom of the Google results, but its present in a much more useful manner. Notice the top related keyword is "slicker brush," another common name for a dog brush that I didn't know of.
If we go a little lower down on the page, Keywords Everywhere has a huge "People Also Searched For" segment off to the side that offers way more suggestions. Here is a screenshot from further down the page. You can also see how the MozBar shows PA and DA for every result and the ahrefs toolbar adds a button to rapidly pull up the free ahrefs report of the page. https://i.imgur.com/x1DXjNR.jpg
If I was actually in this niche, at this point I'd be deciding that "dog grooming brushes" isn't a term I'm gonna be able to compete for. We can tell right away that this is a hard search term, for several reasons:
But "dog grooming brushes" isn't much of a long-tail, anyway, and I found the term "slicker brush" as a related search. So I'll repeat the process I did before, this time starting with "slicker brush" as a seed keyword in Keyword Shitter.
After letting it run for a bit and dropping the output into my spreadsheet, I find two keywords to pursue: "slicker brush for dogs" and "slicker brush for cats." The first one is a juicy keyword with 2,400 monthly searches. But when we look at the SERPs, we find a keyword that will be difficult to crack. The frontpage is filled with high DA corporate websites and Amazon results. However, we do find an affiliate site, and a rather poor one: slickerbrush.com
This guy is probably riding largely on his awesome domain name. The page is very thin, but it does have a DA of 15 which is better than I might expect for how simple and sparse the page is.
If I was in this niche, I probably wouldn't go for this keyword. It's very competitive. But "slicker brush for cats" is a better target. It only has 590 monthly searches, but the front page is much more sparse. Buried under 4 top Amazon results and a Google "People Also Asked" block is our friend slickerbrush.com. He has a decent page for this keyword, and I think if the site had more overall content and some more informational content with backlinks to raise his DA, he could probably be above the Amazon results in the SERPs for this term. He has the #1 spot and a Google featured snppet for "best slicker brush for cats," the page's exact-match keyword, but that is a search term with 0 monthly volume.
Were I in the pet niche, I would target this keyword. Especially a wider pet authority type site would have no problem taking it over, but even a small niche site with a DA of 15-20+ could probably take this keyword. As I said, I think he's mostly riding on his exact match domain name. Since I've now identified a competitor, I can go pull a free ahrefs report and see the top keywords for the page, how many backlinks (0 in this case,) and other interesting data. It's limited, but unless you're doing a serious deep-dive competitor analysis, it can do a great job of giving you a good outline, especially when just doing quick research like this. While it gives you limited results on a whole domain, since you can analyze individual pages there is a lot of data just sitting there for free.
