July MLS Thread

What happened in June?

Joe Wagoner, one of the founders of SRFC, stepped down from the club. In his own words:
This is a positive development that has been in the works for many months. When we sold Republic FC to Kevin Nagle in May of 2017, the agreement was that I'd stay fully engaged until the end goal was imminent and new employees were settled. We are there. That means it's time to turn the page on my role in this story.
I don't foresee Joe having to pay for a beer at a Republic match ever again.
Speaking of founders, Warren Smith is starting a USL Championship squad in San Diego with Landon Donovan.

New Sponsors

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Sacramento (read Wheatland) joined on for a "title sponsorship" for SRFC. No details on whether they are going to be a Quailyards stadium sponsor. The sponsorship was evident at the first home match after the announcement with both large field display and emcee announcements about it.
With legal sports betting potentially becoming a thing, this is not a surprising move.
Bella Graces Vineyards joins on as an indomitable partner. Their wines are now available at the matches. No indication of whether this is a similar "title sponsorship" as well, but it came soon after the Hard Rock announcement.

But there was dirt moving in the Railyards in June!?!?

True enough there was/is some construction going on in the Railyards. manybeaucoup was wise and chose not to try and take photos while driving on 5 but alerted us to it. The construction is essentially right where Kaiser will be as tallgoalie pointed out. Bourboneer really knows everything that is going on and is trying to lead us all off the trail.
I made sure to go and snag a panorama of the construction so I can get that sweet sweet karma that lilotimz has promised.

Where are we now?

As of July 1, 2019 it appears that presentations will be taking place the week of July 15.

MLS is officially expanding to 30 teams. This means that there are currently three (3) spots that are unaccounted for. While only 24 teams are currently playing, teams 25 (Nashville - begins play 2020), 26 (Miami - begins play 2020), and 27 (Austin - begins play 2021) have already been awarded. The expansion fees for teams 28 & 29 will jump to $200 million. This is a massive increase from the roughly $70 million fee MLS was charging when Sacramento Republic was initially looking to join MLS.
MLS states that the Board of Governors (BoG) have,
given the green light for league officials to begin “exclusive, formal discussions” with ownership groups in Sacramento and St. Louis for the chance to become clubs No. 28 and No. 29 in MLS.
Garber makes clear that this does not mean that the teams have been awarded. What it does mean is that spots 28 & 29 are currently earmarked for Sacramento & Saint Louis. There will not be a dark horse competitor at the last moment unless one of the two cities fail to meet the requirements set out by MLS. MLS expects to make their final decisions on 28 & 29 prior to the MLS All-Star Game on July 31 with 28 & 29 starting as early as 2021 or 2022.

What does Sacramento need to do now?

Garber states that Sacramento needs to
  1. Finalize corporate sponsorship support
  2. Finalize stadium plan
  3. Work on the training player development plan

What about the City of Sacramento?

The City of Sacramento unanimously approved the term sheet for the Railyards stadium. The term sheet outlines $33 million in tax rebates, advertising rights, and fee waivers. This is significantly different from the Golden 1 Center as the city is not putting cash towards the stadium. Since MLS announced they are expanding to 30 teams, [Mayor Steinberg has come out saying that, "we're gonna bring this home."(https://www.sacbee.com/sports/article229441734.html)
The Sacramento Bee reports that the City of Sacramento has set aside $1.8 million for administrative tasks related to stadium development.

What about Sacramento Republic?

Ben Gumpert talked with local media after the announcement from MLS. He states that Sacramento has never been as far along as they are now and thanks everyone involved. He says the next steps for Sacramento are to follow the process outlined by MLS as quickly as possible.
Apparently, the discussions between MLS and SRFC investors now center around design details for the Quailyards stadium.

Who is going to be team 30?

Garber mentioned a few cities as possible locations for team 30. Here they are in alphabetical order.

Betting Rebates

Does anyone know of betting companies offering rebates on sports and/or horse racing betting. By rebates I mean, if I were to place a $100 bet, and it loses, the betting company would return me a % of the losing bet. Thanks :)

Help! Having Second thoughts on the i7-9700k in my build (For VR Gaming with odyssey+)

I've been meaning to build a SFF PC primarily for VR gaming with my Odyssey+ and maybe some 4K Gaming since I already have a 4k Monitor (LG 43UD79-D).
After days of tormenting myself over the 2700x vs 9700K decision I settled on the 9700K having convinced myself that I need that extra single-threaded performance, for future proofing, if nothing else since i plan to keep this for at least 5 yrs without major overhauling. So even though the performance came at the extra price,it seemed good value for money looking at the benchmarks and considering gaming will be its primary usage and 8 cores are more than enough for anything else.
But Ryzen 2700x costs have been declining steadily and coupled with the recent revelation that I might not even need the extra CPU cooler if i'm willing to tinker with the stock wraith spire cooler, that's almost a $200 intel-premium and so now I am not entirely convinced if that's worth it.
So I'm back to the drawing table on whether a 9700K even makes sense for my usage/build, considering also that this is an HTPC, mini-ITX cabinet and I fully anticipate having to tinker around with cooling/airflow to keep away the throttling.
Do you think the difference would be noticeable ?
2700x seems like a solid CPU. Does it really bring down the performance for any of the popular games @4K or in a VR ?
With 9700K would I simply be sitting on extra horse power forever under-utilizing it ?
Is Intel + Notuca CPU cooler a safer bet against temperature throttling compared to 2700x + Wraith Spire ?

And while we're at it, would love to get some feedback on whether i'm overpaying for the motherboard, since I don't think i'll be tinkering with Overclocking (mainly because don't know how).
Should I be going for a cheaper one ?
Overall I don't want to compromise too much on the performance and would like to future proof, but I hate the idea of splurging unnecessarily (which 9900K and 2080Ti seem to be)

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Time to replace my 7 yo workhorse HP Pavilion Elite.

Hey. So I'm looking at getting an idea on a new PC that I plan to build myself for the first time. The basics of what I'm looking for is a work horse that will have longevity. My current system came from HP in 2010 and has served me well with simple upgrades to the RAM, GPU, and a reapplication of thermal paste. Given it's regularly running upwards of 60C when I'm just browsing the internet, it's time for an new one.
There's a rough outline of what I've picked out below but I don't know too much about what I'm doing. I am eyeing the Intel i7-7820X as a processor given it's speed and 8 cores. It would be a nice step up from the i7-970 I've been using the past 7 years.
What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
Professional work and everyday use. The programs I use for work are usually Maya and After Effects. I'll use Maya for a bit of everything from modeling to effects to rendering. After Effects is usually for simpler animation based tasks these days. I'm also going to start using Zbrush a bit more and maybe Houdini as well as Nuke.
I also do a little bit of gaming on PC but it's typically limited to Civ 5 and 6 as well as Kerbal Space Program.
From my experience, the varied programs I use means both CPU and RAM are key components that I need to have in mind. As such, I'm eyeing the i7-7820X for the CPU. Right now I have a i7-970 which is 6 cores so I'm thinking of making a jump up to 8 with this new system.
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
I want to keep it close $2000 given I'm planning to carry over my current GPU.
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
Not 100% sure yet which I know means that any builds will be slightly out of date when I do.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
Standard internal components excluding GPU.
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
US and I bet there is as I'm around Los Angeles.
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
Two 1080p monitors, Logitech keyboard and mouse, and EVGA GeForce GTX 960 Super Clocked ACX 2.0 4GB GDDR5 GPU
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
No. I have no intention of overclocking.
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
I'm looking at a 500 GB SSD and a 4TB HDD to start.
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
Black mid tower with a window. Maybe some white LED lighting. The case needs to be less than 18.5inches(470mm) tall. I also want one, if not two, optical drive bays for a Blu-ray drive which I'll worry about and probably a media card reader.
The case I've been looking at is the Corsair Spec 03 White but it's not compatible with 240mm water coolers which I've seen is recommended for the i7-7820X.
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
Yes. I'm planning to get Win 10 Pro.
Extra info or particulars:
The main thing is that I want to stick with an Intel processor. I do know that AMD is offering some great processors with the Threadrippers though.
I put together a rough list I made on pcpartpicker. I haven't really looked much into the motherboard yet so that's just a placeholder on my list.

Basic Guide to Finance

There are a few areas to cover. I'm going to ignore housing as that isn't a quick fix; but just be aware, renting is NOT throwing away money. The opportunity cost of owning is high, and maintenance, property tax and so on are usually underestimated. Add high transaction costs and a very low liquidity (ie, it costs thousands of dollars to buy a house in legal fees and tax, it costs more to sell with realtor commissions, etc, and it can take months or years to sell a house in a down market).
Check out a rent vs buy calculator. If you might move in the next few years, don't buy. If it is much cheaper to rent than buy, rent. Don't get me wrong - nothing wrong with owning a home - but just don't go nuts.
Ok, so firstly. Spend less than you earn, right? Easy?
Banking. Don't pay bank fees! Either PCF or Tangerine will do most of what you need. If you must have access to a teller, RBC do multi product rebates if you have chequing, savings, and credit with them - a $1 TFSA and any old credit card will do (perhaps the 5% cashback at Target card).
Food. Despite what "they" say, food is not expensive. Historically, 1/3 of income went to food! It is possible to eat well on $100 or so per person per month - depending, of course, upon where you live. In Iqaluit? Not so much.
Try to shop at No Frills, Food Basics and the like. Costco can be ok if you're savvy, but you might just end up spending a load more.
Buy in bulk when things are on sale. Even if a 500g box of something is on sale, it may well still be cheaper to buy the 2Kg box - check the numbers.
Buy what is on sale. I can't emphasise that enough. If you eat cheese, and cheese is normally $7 a block, but it's on sale for $4, buy several blocks. Like, 6, or 8. Bam - you just saved $20.
Get the right credit card for the job. Most of the big banks have really really poor entry level cards. Sign up for Great Canadian Rebates Edit - taking it out as not allowed Non - several cards I'm going to mention have additional sign up bonuses if you apply through GCR!
Spend under $400 a month on gas/groceries? Try the MBNA SmartCash - 2% back, 1% back elsewhere, 5% for the first 6 months. This is a great default gas and grocery card.
Spend much more than that? Well, you can either get multiple SmartCash cards, you can go to the MBNA Rewards Travel card (which is flat 2% everywhere but has a yearly fee of $89 - waived for the first year), or - depending on where you shop - step up to the Scotia Gold Amex (4% on gas/groc/restaurants/entertainment) or Scotia Momentum Infinite Visa (4% on gas/groc, 2% on recurring and drug store). Note Loblaws (RCSS, No Frills) do NOT take Amex. Both these Scotia cards have a yearly fee, but both are first year free. Both have sign up bonuses through GCR. The Amex is a travel reward card, but you can redeem for a lower percentage on other things. The Amex is - IMHO - the better card, and easier to get, but if you spend a lot at Loblaws the Visa wins.
There don't seem to be any GCMBNA sign up perks any more.. Which is a real shame, but the cards are still good. Just go direct to mbna.ca and take a look.
Nobody should be getting less than 1% on every credit card purchase. If you are - change cards.
Ok, what else. Saving? Don't bother with the big banks! Unless it happens to fall right, don't even bother with the PCF/Tangerine "x% for 3 months!" nonsense - their "better" rates are rarely any better than the standard rates of certain credit unions.
For example - People's Trust have a TFSA at 3%, 1 year GIC at 2.4%, 15 month and 2 year at 2.45%. Achieva Financial have a 2% savings account, and a 5 year GIC at 2.8%. Achieva also give you $1 a month for having estatements! I have a referral code for Achieva - edit - taking it out as not allowed, boo - sign up at http://www.achieva.mb.ca/Home/ApplyforanAccount/NewCustomers.aspx
For a cash TFSA, People's Trust is the best. Rates here for PT and here for Achieva. There are others - Hubert's Happy Savings, for one.
Investing? I cannot recommend strongly enough reading Canadian Couch Potato - start with the FAQ. Note that the TFSA can be used to invest, and in fact that is its best use! Getting 3% from People's Trust is fine for short term savings, but vs the 8% long term return of the stock market? If you don't need the money in the next 3-5 years, invest it! Questrade is my default recommendation for this as ETF buying is free. That means you can send $100, $500, or even just $50 every paycheque and get it invested.
The gist is - don't worry about beating the index. Diversify, find low cost funds, and ignore it - pay in as often as you can and keep chugging along. Magic Will Happen. You can retire in 10 years if you want. More of that idea at Mr Money Mustache
"Should I buy a $300k house with 5% down and rent it out for $1000 a month?" - No. No. No. Two rules of thumb - 2% rule and 50% rule. The first is really for multiple occupancy buildings, but it is saying that the monthly gross rent should be 2% of purchase price. For single family homes it should be at least 1%. The 50% rule says that, over time, roughly 50% of gross rent will go to expenses - insurance, maintenance, vacancy, etc, etc.
These are American rules and they aren't as relevant for Canada, but they are rules of thumb. Don't bet the farm on appreciation. Housing prices are usually in sync with inflation. They are waaay out of sync in certain parts of the country now. They cannot keep going the way they have been. They won't necessarily fall in absolute terms, but they may well go nowhere for 10 years - during 3% inflation that means a significant loss. If your property is cashflowing, oh well. But if you're paying money in every month just to stand still? No thanks! Aim for 1%. If you can't get it where you live - look elsewhere! Can't get it in Canada? Still - look elsewhere!
Cars? That's easy. Buy a good, used car that will do what you need 90% of the time. Need to haul a horse or boat or trailer once a year? Rent a truck to do it for $50. Don't get 18 l/100 km every day because you need it once a year! If you have two children you don't need a minivan, a Corolla or Civic will do!
Anything else? Don't get sucked onto the Hedonic treadmill. If there are two of you, buy a two or three bedroom house - if you buy too much house you'll be house poor, heating, cooling, and maintaining something you really don't need.
Pay yourself first - money to be invested should come straight out of your bank account on payday, and ideally be automatically invested. Unfortunately you can't easily do that with Questrade, and most bank mutual funds are really bad. TD eSeries is good (0.35% MER give or take), RBC have a couple of OK ones (Canadian Index and US Index - which are 0.35% with TD eSeries - are 0.7% here).
Act now - don't procrastinate, get an account open and money going in. If all else fails, and you don't care about asset allocation and all that - open a Tangerine account and buy their balanced fund. You're paying a small premium for this, but you're getting a good broad asset allocation by default. Another rule of thumb - your age as your percentage of bonds. So if you're 30, you want at most 30% fixed income/bonds!
Get the big pieces lined up and it all falls into place. It doesn't matter if you're earning $30k or $130k - you can't compare because the cost of living is so different in different parts of the country. I've never been one for actual budgets (ie, $200 on this, $100 on that) - for me, as long as more comes in than goes out, I'm generally happy. I know many rave about "You Need a Budget" or YNAB.
What have I missed?

Celebrate Cheltenham with Sky Vegas Casino

Football fans are anxiously waiting for the Champions League and Europa League to resume, while tennis aficionados are nostalgic after the Australian open. On the other side of the Atlantic, NHL and NBA fans are rooting for their favorite teams to make the playoffs, while spring training blooms for those who are interested in baseball. Sky Vegas covers all these sports, but the British bookmaker and online casino group is also a major supporter of horse racing events. The Cheltenham Festival is perhaps the most important competition of this type, so it comes as no surprise that it enjoys plenty of coverage. For the first time at Sky Vegas Casino, fans of casino games and horse racing can enjoy the best of both worlds by participating in this promotion. It goes by the name of Racing Rebate and the name says it all, as those who sign up will be eligible for reimbursements. It's not that difficult to participate in this campaign, because the only requirement is to accumulate at least 50 players club comp points. You've got an entire week to do so, which means that it is not even necessary to make the transition to higher limits. By receiving a €10 free bet, players will have the chance to compete on real cash without taking any chances and they keep all the profits they make. In addition to receiving the aforementioned free bet, all participants will be eligible for a reimbursement of €50 on all their losses. If you find this campaign interesting, know that it has started on February 1 and will come to an end on March 13. That's plenty of time to opt in and start accumulating the 50 comp points necessary for being added on the list of players entitled for reimbursement. To put things into perspective, let's just say that you accumulate one comp point whenever you wager €10. Qualifying for a racing rebate credit is not supposed to be rocket science and beginners will have no problem in learning the ropes. While the maximum reimbursement goes as high as €50, one would have to lose a minimum of €25 to be eligible for the refund. Assuming you are successful and actually and up winning cash, you won't be entitled to claim the reimbursement, but this is hardly a problem. The Cheltenham edition of Racing Rebate participants are going to be paid on March 18, so this is when they will receive the maximum credit of €50. The money is subject to 20 times wagering requirements, which means that you need to play at least €1000 before cashing out. As for the free bet, the waiting comes to an end on March 14, when the bonus will be credited to the accounts of all participating players regardless of their status in the reimbursement campaign.

I think that's all. I have been running stuff on laptops for far too long (almost a decade now), laptops were better during University and you don't look a gift horse in the mouth. Now I finally have some money and I want a decent computer to call my own and play games. Mostly the game playing. Never built a PC before and I'm looking forward to it, it's buying the parts at a decent price that's holding me back. Any help at all would be awesome in this.

My father downloaded something that seems suspect.I've deleted it, but I'm still suspicious. What do I do now?

I wasn't actually aware until I went to use the computer and noticed that things were different-new toolbars etc.
My father was browsing online for maps, and came across a map on a mapwebsite. Apparently, to use their maps, you had to ''sign up'', which included installing stuff onto your computer. When I came to the computer, the sign up process was at a point where my father had installed several things that had nothing to do with maps. (One installation was something to do with rebates, in dollars. We're in the uk.) When I tried to delete the installation, a pop up appeared warning me that I would lose my username, free discounts and everything I owned bar the kitchen sink if I dared to delete this wonderful opportunity. I've never seen a pop up before when deleting an installation, let alone one that was saying, ''Fine, go ahead, delete me, but you'll be sorry''. As the program was deleting itself, the installation itself was asking for access to my computer, but I denied it. When the deletion was complete, the computer said ''Installation deleted, but some items remain. They may be deleted separately''. That's odd, is it not? So I've been through the add/remove programs thingy and deleted the things that have been installed by the map installation. Cool. But I still feel dirty, (and not ''good''dirty'' like spending a night with Lindsay Lohan. Bad dirty, like going off with someone who calls himself a policeman but is asking for your money). I'll bet this maps thingy has installed a trojan or virus into the laptop. What should I do?
The names of the products applications so far:
maps.alot.com (this is where he was looking for a map. Apparently, to use their maps, you had to ''sign up'', which included installing stuff to the computer.
CrawleWebcrawler (toolbar). I found that at the top of the page. Sitting there on my page like it had been there since Britney Spears released ''Hit Me Baby One More Time''.
I don't know the name of this application, but it was something ''rebate''. Offering me ''rebate'' on anything I bought. This is what initially raised my suspicions. It was on the screen when I came to the computer, and the box could not be deleted.
Something called pageranker, or page indexer, something like that.
There were two other applications I came across in add/remove programs, but I deleted them as soon as I came across them, so I can't recall their names. They had nothing at all to do with maps though.
So what do I do now? My internet security/antivirus is woefully inadequate (I use AVG 8.5), and I'm now looking at free antivirus software, although I fear it may be too late. (closing the barndoor after the horse has bolted).
