LOCKED! Drawing to come soon. 100k Subscribers Celebration And Raffle!
For over 12 years now, discgolf
has been cultivating its spot in the world of disc golf. In fact, it’s very likely the single largest, most active online disc golf community in existence. Today our (not so) little corner of the disc golf world has hit a big milestone by reaching 100k subscribers. We, the mods, think that’s something worth celebrating. What better way than to throw a celebratory disc golf swag give-away! To enter just be an discgolf user and make a top level comment on this post. Specifics can be found below. Pound Disc Golf
, Adidas Outdoor
, your friendly
moderators, and others have all thrown in some pretty sweet swag for the cause. The list can be seen below as well as rules for entry. But before we get to that we want to throw out a HUGE thanks to everyone who has participated in this community throughout the years, helping turn this place into what it is today. Personally, I also want to give a big shout out to all my fellow mods, past and present, but especially present. These guys have been nothing short of amazing.
Lastly, before we get to the goodies, I figured I’d share interesting information: A Brief History Of /discgolf:
July 16, 2008 - Subreddit created by /usedgnw (just over 12 years ago) Fun Facts about /discgolf:
Spring, 2010 - m1kael was added as a moderator
May, 2010 - /usedgscene does the first proper community AMA
Between 2010 and 2011 - m1kael takes over top mod spot by appealing to the admins to have the inactive original creator removed (thanks admins!)
Spring, 2011 - Weatherstation added as a moderator (~3k subscribers)
Funny story: m1kael and I first met at Bohart Ranch in Bozeman when we both showed up at the same time as singles and decided to play together randomly. Somehow the topic of reddit and discgolf came up, he told me he was the moderator and asked if I wanted to help him. Though he's not active anymore, we're both still great friends. The rest is history. May, 2011 - /useRandrange creates first discgolf custom logo, still in use at old.reddit
Aug, 2011 - /useRoyalhghnss Posts the first ever CCDG Round coverage video
July, 2012 - First CSS overhaul. Creation of /discexchange along with some other failed disc golf related subreddits
Mar 18, 2013 - 10k Subscribers
Oct, 2013 - First Touring Pro AMA by Nate Sexton
Early 2014 - /discdyeing created
Jul 28, 2014 - 20k Subscribers
2015 - first set of new mods added (stinger1030, sourcerer24, NotSayingJustSaying, heartman74, Auriyon, Allurex, etc) Only heartman74 remains but I’ll bet a lot of these guys are still lurking!
Dec 31, 2016 - 40k Subscribers

S&P 1700 within 6 Months
submitted by DongusMcLongus to StockMarket [link] [comments]
This is a new post after some interest in a comment why I believed the S&P is going to 1700
. Update 3:
I am going to limit my answers in the comments guys; as the post becomes more popular it is becoming more diluted with snark etc. I don't expect anyone to follow my opinions; I just want to share one aspect of why I am making the trades I am. I maybe wrong. Random walk and all that.. Original Disclaimer
: This is based on historical precedence and we are in unprecedented times but, with history as our guide a strong argument can be made for the S&P to decline to a level that is currently inconceivable. I have disclosed all my positions near the bottom. Update 1
: Slightly long; happy to be challenged in the comments, it is late in the UK (2am) so may tidy it up and add more references and charts tomorrow. Update 2: Have expanded the post to answer as many comments and requests for references wherever possible and tagged in the requestors.
Intro: Are we in a recession?
If you believe so, or that we are heading into a recession then there are four things needed to support a genuine rally out of a recession
- Fiscal policy
- Monetary policy
- Improving economic health indicators
- Accurate pricing reflecting the end of the recession and tempered optimism
We are missing 2 out of those 4 criteria; the overwhelming monetary and fiscal policy (world-records) are compensating for lack of positive indicators
and volatile and bullish pricing
What do you mean by pricing?
It can be argued that the current price of stocks is not discounting for the acute and likely chronic harm to consumer sentiment and spending power. For example; the UK clothing retailer Next Group closed their bricks and mortar stores (share price increased 4%) then they cancelled all online shopping (share price increased 3%) and finally they cancelled all orders with their supply chain (shares leapt 12.8% during the rally.) There is the massive amount of second, third and fourth order effects that this one company does to the UK economy (and Turkish factories). Suppliers, shipping, design, marketing etc all cancelled and the staff furloughed.
This is one example but the indexes are currently full of similar examples and some analysts are ringing the alarm bells.
Lazard Asset Management are concerned that the pandemic “will persist longer than many investors suspect and that the economic damage will be deeper and potentially longer-lasting”.
Reddit is quick to mention that stonks
only go up but there is some truth to that sentiment at present since any negative factors
are dismissed as being priced in and all positive factors are heralded as a cause for stocks to rally. If priced in was accurate then we would not see record-beating market rallies back to back. 10% volatility swings over 48 hours is the very definition of not priced in.
There is evidence to suggest that, well, the bullish sentiment is wrong and mainly because it is retail investors being taken for a ride
whilst funds re-balance and offload.
Retail traders "buying the dips" is normally a contrarian signal, meaning that it's time to sell. This section is for u/lntoIerant
in response to a comment.
Edit to answer some comments about this portion thus far. Do retail investors move the market?
Are retail investors buying in greater volumes?
- No, they act as a sentiment indicator that the market is reaching a peak absurdity. Similar sentiments have preceded major recessions in the past. When you hear a layman offering stock tips or googling how to buy stocks then we are reaching the precipice of a depression. new market entrants are not the same as traditional retail investors.
Are retail investors dumb money?
- That is hard to say because the majority of retail trades are done off-book. The trades are mixed in with portfolio moves or using the retail service which is a dark pool.
- Well, no. Kind of. It depends. This white paper indicates that retail investors are more knowledgeable, more profitable and better informed than previously thought. However, a lot of their trades, as mentioned above, are done off-book as part of a larger portfolio and they simply lose a fraction of a basis point because market timing is not that critical.
What does this have to do with the S&P dividend and the EPS?
Major indexes are comprised of stocks that pay handsome dividends
; normally 2% yield a year. The companies have reached their limit of growth (HSBC haven't discovered 5 million new customers and Shell are not finding new fossil fuels) so investors hold the stock for income-seeking reasons
The FTSE 100 was priced in to generate £89 billion in dividends for 2019 and £90 billion+ in 2020. That has largely collapsed.
The only companies that pay dividends are those taking on debt to do so like Shell. And they have; a 10Bn credit line to maintain dividends
. The Bank of Englandhad to slap 5 UK banks
from issuing dividends at this time. That means that their primary valuations as income-generating stocks are questionable...
...especially since the dividends are not expected to return to the 2020 levels for another 10 years now. Edit to add: This portion is taken from the market report by BNY Mellon. You can see the chart here
. The analyst is John Velis of BNY. Thanks to u/flash_aaaah_ahhhhh
for prompting me.
“By 2021, the market expects dividends per share for the S&P 500 to be down to under $38 per share (a staggering 41 per cent drop from recent highs of approximately $63 per share) and then to start slowly rising again. Going out 10 years to 2030, the expectation is that dividends will just about recover to pre-Covid-19 levels.”
Main body: Onto the S&P
In 2021 the market expects the dividends per share for the S&P to be reduced to $38 per share. That is priced in and common knowledge.
That is a 41% drop from the recent highs of $63 a share and seems alarming for income seeking investors since we are not expected to recover to those prices for 8-10 years. Source.
But DataTrek have noted that we are still currently trading at 21X
the trailing 10 year earnings of $122 a share.
Dividends per share normally don't fall as far as earnings per share. But they are inverted at present.
For the S&P to be trading at 2,650 level (or even higher) it means the market does not believe the pandemic or recession will have any long-term damage. That puts us squarely at odds with items 3 and 4 in our list of factors needed to exit a bear market.
Talk to me about 2008!
Thanks to u/mister_woody
for asking for more data.
- S&P 500 high: 1565.15, Oct. 9, 2007
- Low: 682.55, March 5, 2009
- S&P 500 loss: 56.4 percent
- Duration: 17 monthts
- EPS decline: 86 to 7
- Dividend decline: 26-28 down to 22-24
In other recessions, including 2008, the dividend price per share drops approximately 12-15% but the earnings per share drop by considerably more; as much as 85%.
That means that in 2008 financial crisis and subsequent bear market; the dividends per share dropped by a lower percentage amount than the total index value drop
You can see that in this chart here
- The market drop was approximately 56% and the Dividend drop was 14%
- The market drop was 56% and the earnings drop was 85%
Right now, we have the reverse. Dividend share drop in this market
is 41% (which is chilling) and market drop was approximately only 30% and rallying heavily back to the mid-20's only. That makes no financial sense unless the assets were being propped up by buyers...
- S&P ATH: 3386 to 2488 on April 4th (26.5% drop)
- S&P ATH Dividend: From $63 expected to $38 (a 41% drop)
- S&P ATH EPS:
If the S&P follows the same playbook at 2008-9, then we would expect to see levels of around 1400 at the bottom but that seems extremely
bearish expecting that this crisis is worse than 2008.
If previous indications hold true, then we would expect the S&P to drop by approximately 50-60%ish at the true bottom to reflect the 41% decrease in expected shares plus additional discounts and negative market sentiment.
In reality, we are probably likely to pull back to between 13X and 15X trailing average which puts the S&P between 1600 (low side) and 1800 (high side).
You are putting a lot of faith in a re-run of the 2008 crisis
I am. No doubt about it. After October 2008, stocks fell for another four months
, piling up 40% of losses before the recently ended bull market began in March 2009.
New market indicators
Since I wrote this post, the DJIA was up over 4% and closed down on the day.
Thank you to theTwitter feed of Jim Bianco
for this: Since 1925 (95 yrs!), up more than 4% and closing down on the day has happened only one other time ... Oct 14, 2008 (Tsy Sec Hank Paulson forced the banks to take TARP money). The S&P 500 was up 3.5% at the high and closed down on the day. Since April 1982 (daily H,L,C began) has happened three other times...Oct 3, 08, Oct 14, 08, and Oct 17, 08.
This mkt continues to trade like Oct 08. It was six months and another 25% down before the low. Bezinga are also playing up the 2008 similarities
Why is bullish sentiment so wrong?
The negative reports are so wildly negative that the almost defy belief. We are dealing with insane numbers way beyond our traditional frame of reasoning. This is topped only by the insanity of the scale of quantitative easing. Less than a year ago, a small movement in the non-farm payrolls would lead to a 2-3% move in the markets; now we are hitting 700K jobs lost, a truly ugly number and the market rallies hugely. Future economic students will study this to try and understand what was happening.
In the space of weeks
the majority of the Western economies have swung to being effectively state-sponsored, centralised economies and no one really knows how to unwind these positions.
It is impossible to reconcile being a bull with a centralised state economy and blue-chip stocks that refuse to pay dividends but the share price remains at the same levels as when they paid a 2% yield.
The UK forecast
is for the deepest contraction since 1900. Business surveys have shown activity crashing
faster in March than during the financial crisis. The Office for National Statistics has published experimental research on the impact
of Covid-19 on the economy.
With entire swaths of the economy having shut down “traditional forecasting methods become irrelevant”, warned Chiara Zangarelli, economist at investment bank Nomura.
Michelle Girard, economist at NatWest, said that while there was huge uncertainty about the precise magnitude of the contraction in gross domestic product in the second quarter, “there is little doubt that it will be off the scale” That is not a bullish sentiment. It means markets are acting irrationally since fundamentals are being dismissed as priced-in. In reality; nothing is priced in.
- I am long VIX to 78 (expected by end of Apri but ideally by 24/4)
- I am short India to 7800 (expected by 15/05)
- I am short S&P to 2200 (expected by mid-late of May) and will be to 1810-50
- I am short Dow to 19000 (expected by mid-late May) and will be again to 17000
- I am short FTSE to 5200 and will be again to 4800 (expected by mid-late May)
- No current active hedges / all spreads due to being tax free profits in the UK
- Further spread betting the swings to the upside where I can to scalp
- I am holding a portfolio of streaming services and gaming companies
- I am holding Microsoft and Disney
- I own a very small quantity of crypto, primarily XRP
Edit to add: So, your entire thesis is totally destroyed if companies keep paying dividends?
In a nutshell.
But something else will be destroyed; the western taxpayer and future growth.
- If companies are using 0% interest rates to take out loans and then transferring those loans a small 1% of the populace via dividends; that bill will come due to the citizen taxpayer and/or shareholder of the future
- If companies are taking federal or governmental aid to furlough workers but still paying dividends to shareholders? That bill will come due to the citizen taxpayer and effectively is an even more extreme form of socialising market losses; it means that we truly can never have a correction since the top 1% will lose. Not lose the investment itself, which can rebound, but will simply lose the yield on an investment and only for a short period of time. If we have reached a point where that is considered unacceptable then we truly are living in a new socialist, centrally planned world.
- Here is Tesco defending their decision today of £635m in dividends...despite receiving considerable amounts of VAT, Rates and Rental relief from the UK Government (£585m)...they have done an admirable job and are profitable but this market signal and their stated reasons for doing so are alarming.
CEO said 'every pound we receive [in rates relief] will be invested in ensuring Tesco is able to support British shoppers...' That is tax payers paying a subsidy to a free-market company for the ability to shop...and also...
Mr Lewis said that the needs of savers and pension funds also needed to be considered in the debate around dividends. “We’ve thought long and hard about our responsibilities here . . . we are in a strong position to pay out for the benefit of those people
Edit to add: What about the FED and stimulus
OK - to truly test my own assumptions; here is my argument AGAINST my position.
The Fed have not quite printed money
as Reddit loves to meme. They have issued liquidity
and central banks worldwide have allowed banks to relax their requirement to hold reserves of cash. That injects money into the business world by allowing lending and borrowing to continue. It also reduces theoretical
risk since the models are back within tolerance.
When the time comes they will remove the credits
gradually without causing hyperinflation. They do this by paying banks not to lend back into the system by holding a % of their assets at the Federal Reserve. So they pay the banks but the banks keep the deposit at the Fed and don't pass on the liquidity to potential borrowers..gradually and sustainably. https://www.aier.org/article/powells-new-monetary-regime/
That means the borrower of the future (home purchasers, entreprenuers etc) will have very few credit facilities available so RIP to the long-term economic growth.
We also have unprecedented
government support for citizens. The largest social security welfare plan since WW2, especially in Europe.
If you believe that the Western economies can weather this storm using the bridging devices by central banks then it pays to dollar cost average
into the market and keep buying the dips as a retail investor.
Lots of buoyant news from European nations and China about the slowing pandemic is overwhelming the negative leading and lagging economic indicators about economic data. If you believe the economy can return to normal within 36 months, then it pay to be bullish and invest.
If you are day-trading, swing-trading or short-term options trading then the overwhelming market moves are likely to crush people as the system flexes under lots of volatility. You are also likely prioritising the negative news and technical analysis in your filter bubble and de-prioritising the positive news particularly when that news is fiscal or monetary policy since those things are dry, boring and incomprehensible half the time.
So you miss Fed backstops critical bankingi
and instead hear UK Prime Minister in intensive care.
If you want to know what is going on...
- Look at the short term fundamentals
- Zoom out. Re-look.
- Zoom out to an even longer timeline. Re-look.
- Zoom out to an even even longer timeline. Re-look.
- Zoom out to an even even even longer timeline. Re-look.
Decide where you making a prediction. Plan your trade, trade your plan. How do the FED take money back out of the economy?
They FED purchase the security initially to then sell it back to the asset-holder later. So the balance of credit-deficit merely swaps but by paying a small premium on the excesses that they hold, they can cushion the inflation or deflation of the currency.
So, they effectively give the bank liquidity and then remove that liquidity later by passing the asset back...but also provide a small premium to cushion the blow; 50% of the premium is then held on Federal Reserve books so that the market is not flooded with new money.
The FED previously reduced their balance sheet from $4.4 trillion to $3.7 trillion
but it remains to be seen if they can unwind a position of this size.
- 2 out of the 4 necessities for exiting a recession are not present
- S&P currently trading at 21X the trailing 10 year average dividend
- In previous recessions a 50% drop in the market was accompanied by a 15% drop in dividends
- Market analysts expecting for a 41% drop in dividends but only trading a 26% drop in the market. At present the S&P dividend per share drop is 41% but the S&P is rallying back to less than 20% drop...whilst dividends are not expected to return to 2019 levels of income for 8-10 years
- In previous recessions the dividend per share drop is much less than the overall index drop
- S&P highly overvalued, completely inverted when compared with dividend expectation and market dividend pricing
- S&P pull back to 1600-1800 over short-medium time frame (1 month-6 months).
- If market history is to be believed then 1400 is not unfeasible based on percentages but you have to be hoping for a total economic destruction for this to happen.; expect a total Governmental response if this happens.
- If S&P continues to rise then it indicates companies are taking on debt or other instruments to pay dividends rather than innovate, upgrade or consolidate their business position which some are (Shell etc).
- Economic data will eventually overpower the stimulus and the Coronavirus is not priced in; hardly anything is priced in and analysts are now saying so publicly.

Another great medium risk but high potential return stock. The stock has taken a beating because of Covid19 & movie theater closures.
Investors think Cineworld's C$34/share buyout offer will be cancelled, yet Reuter's reported, "Cineworld Says No Change In Co's Position On Cineplex Takeover Since March" on April 7. That's double your money at C$11.69 (at post) if it goes through.
Investors also think Cineplex will cancel their monthly $0.15 per share dividend in their next ER that they delayed until June 29, 2020.
Investors are discounting Cineplex's possible rise of online movie rentals to offset their onsite losses.
The odds don't get better than this but do your Due Diligence before investing.

Cineplex also manages Melt Sweet Creations, an in-house dessert bouqtiue brand targeted at women ages 19-35 debuted in December 2017 at Cineplex Cinemas Queensway and VIP. Melt is available at 13 locations.
Beverages are available in both cold and hot formats. Cold beverages include the Coca-Cola lineup, which replaced the Pepsi lineup used at locations formerly owned by Famous Players. 12 locations feature Coca-Cola Freestyle. Hot beverages include Starbucks as the incumbent provider with 105 locations, all which offer Pike Place Roast coffee (regular or decaf) and Tazo tea. Select locations also offer premium drinks such as caffè mocha or caramel macchiato. Tim Hortons is available as a full-service restaurant in five locations, with Brossard being the only location to offer both Tim Hortons and Starbucks.
In most theatres, Cineplex offers sale of alcohol to 19+ guests in Ontario (18+ in Alberta) similar to the VIP theatres albeit from a selection of beer or cider beverages.
If Aurora Cannabis (ACB) & Cineplex (CGX) partnered up to offer CBD & THC infused Cannabis 2.0 edibles in movie theaters, especially the IMAX & 3D ones, it should do very well. Canadian Cannabis Industry stocks should also do well as I posted earlier Cannabis Stocks Opportunity

Cinemark, the third-largest movie theater chain in the U.S., hopes to reopen at least some of its doors to the public in July.
With no major movie release until mid-July, theaters could play “library” movies, which are movies that have already previously been released in cinemas, for several weeks.
If social distancing restrictions are still in place the company said it would either sell every other reserved seat in the theater or suspend reservations and just sell 50% of the tickets per theater.
“Even at peak periods of time in a normal environment, our occupancy levels range from 20% to 30% and we can operate profitably during those scenarios...” - CEO Mark Zoradi
He added that Cinemark has seen attendance as low as 10% and still was able to turn a profit. https://www.cnbc.com/2020/04/15/cinemark-offers-a-look-at-movie-going-post-coronavirus.html

The company closed all 165 theatres across Canada in March due to COVID-19, but the 1,382-seat Brookesbank Avenue location won’t be among those reopening, Cineplex has confirmed.
With Cineplex closing its Lower Lonsdale theatre in 2019, it leaves Park Royal as the only place to catch a big screen flick on the North Shore.
“We thank the community for their patronage over the years, and look forward to welcoming them at neighbouring Cineplex Cinemas Park Royal and VIP,” said Sarah Van Lange, executive director of communications. “I’ll note that our intent is to repurpose the Park & Tilford theatre space, which we’ll have more details on at a later date.” https://www.vancouverisawesome.com/vancouver-news/park-tilford-cineplex-movie-theatre-permanently-closed-north-vancouver-bc-2365365
OTHER NEWS & RUMORS: Why Amazon’s Rumored Buyout of AMC Entertainment Makes Sense (May 12, 2020):

Despite Cineworld maintaining its commitment to buy Cineplex, the market has a different opinion. Remember, Cineplex agreed to be acquired at $34 per share. As I type this, the stock trades at $14.44. There’s no way the spread would be that wide, unless investors were writing off the acquisition completely.
Fortunately for beleaguered Cineplex shareholders, a new suitor could very well come along — one virtually nobody sees coming.
Although I think there’s potential for a private equity group or some other deep-pocketed investor taking a run at Cineplex’s cheap assets, there’s a much more interesting suitor on the horizon.
That acquirer is Amazon.com

Nothing beats watching a great movie on the big screen in premium format:

I'm sick of the congested internet & buffering of online movies & services during Covid19. They need to upgrade the internet infrastructure to 5G & Fiber Optics before it can really grow in my opinion -- especially buffering 4K & 8K movies & future tech that will only require more bandwidth going forward.
Younger people are not afraid of Covid19 like the older crowd. When theaters open, they will rush in to see their favourite movies.
Betting that people won't want to go to movie theaters when they re-open, is like betting the same against live sporting events or music concerts.
No home movie theater can match a real movie theater, even the smaller discount ones, unless you're Bill Gates or Jeff Bezos etc.
With Cineplex's Canadian Monopoly & diversification into other entertainment arenas like eSports & Virtual Reality, as long as they don't go bankrupt & social distancing restrictions are loosened, the stock should increase 2 to 3 times by end of 2021 in my opinion -- especially if the Cineworld Buyout goes as planned or another company like Amazon buys them out for a strong presence & control in Canada.
If a Coronavirus Vaccine is discovered sooner than later, then this stock will rebound accordingly & rapidly -- especially if they don't cancel or even if they do, resume Dividend payments in the future. At current prices, Dividend yield is about 13% per year.
--------------------------------------------- Social distance cinema: drive-in theatres boom – in pictures (May 5, 2020):
We are all social creatures & want to go to movie theater as a social activity, to see & be seen; otherwise, why would Drive In Movie theaters boom during Covid19?
If no one goes out to be seen anymore, then all the Vanity Goods & Services will go under too & we will all dress in sweat pants & T-Shirt -- no need for designer suits & dresses working & staying at home. LOL ;p https://www.theguardian.com/world/gallery/2020/may/05/social-distance-cinema-drive-in-theatres-boom-coronavirus-in-pictures
--------------------------------------------- Internet Bandwidth Requirements:
Online streaming remains the biggest source of 4K content, led by Netflix and Amazon’s growing selection of original series. But many consumer broadband connections aren’t fast enough to allow reliable 4K streaming. Home Theater Movie Resolutions:
- 4K (UHD): 3,840 x 2,160 pixels
- 1080p (Full HD): 1,920 x 1,080 pixels
- 720p (HD): 1,280 x 720 pixels
- 480p (SD): 640 x 480 pixels
- 8K: 7,680 x 4,320 pixels
For comparison purposes, 70mm film - still considered by many to be the gold standard - is roughly equivalent to a 12K resolution in digital terms, so digital's still got some catching up to do on that score.
XMG Gaming Laptops: First Steps & Troubleshooting
submitted by XMG_gg to XMG_gg [link] [comments]
So you got yourself an XMG Gaming Laptop laptop, huh?
Follow this handy guide to go through your first steps
and some commonly recurring questions
. This guide is pretty long and might look frightening on first look, but please note:
- Sometimes it's not a bug, it might be a feature
- Sometimes a thing might be caused by Windows or might be a known issue for a generic hardware components (including NVIDIA Optimus), i.e.: not caused by us
- Some issues covered in this guide are extremely rare, have only been reported once or twice and might be very easy to fix
+++ BREAKING: Fix "No Speaker" issue on XMG FUSION 15 +++
Windows Update has recently brought us a "No speakers, no sound" issue on XMG FUSION 15. Please read all about the solution
in this post
. This should only be a temporary condition and solved soon by pulling the incompatible driver from Windows Update. Update:
incompatible driver has been pulled on May 19, 2020. New driver going to be rolled out shortly.
Now, moving on to the actual content of this thread:
I unboxed my XMG Laptop – what are my first steps? 1. If you purchased with Windows.
When building our laptops, we always make sure to install the latest firmware and drivers. If you purchased with Windows, all drivers will already be installed and you can pretty much start working. NVIDIA updates their driver pretty often, so they might already have a new driver out. Open up GeForce Experience, log into your account and see if the app offers any driver updates. 2. If you purchased without operating system.
Your SSD will be empty, but your firmware will be up to date. Even if you purchase without operating system, we will already have updated the latest BIOS and latest Thunderbolt firmware. Now it’s time to install Windows and install our drivers.
If you don’t have your own Windows install media at hand, you can get the latest official version from here
. The drivers for your XMG Laptop will be on a USB thumb drive in your shipping box. If you want to make absolutely sure that you’re getting the latest drivers, download them each by each from our download portal
. Both sources will include a PDF file that will guide you through each step. The only tricky step is the Audio driver, where you’ll have to do a specific install and reboot sequence. This is explained in detail in the PDF file.
++ Troubleshooting (all models) +++
The following items might apply to any XMG or SCHENKER model. In fact, they might also apply to laptops from other brands. Further down below, you'll find a section that is more specific to individual models.
My battery life is less than it should be / I have high Idle power consumption / my dGPU is not turning off.
Battery life and power consumption are closely interconnected. If your system consumes too much power – even in Idle – your battery life will suffer. Preliminary: check your CPU usage, sorted by tasks
Your first look should be into Windows Task Manager, tab "Details" and then sort by "CPU" usage. You should know that your CPU has multiple cores and threads. For example, on i7-9750H (6 cores, 12 threads) if one single-thread task is running at 100%, it translates to "only" 8% CPU load in Task Manager (100 divided by 12 = 8.33). 8% might not look like much at first glance. But in reality it's one core that is running at maximum speed, taking almost as much power as if all cores would run at the same time. This is because the CPU would boost a single core to much higher speed than it would boost all cores together.
In other words: CPU usage values in Task Manager can be misleading, especially if some broken or badly programmed software is going rogue on a single thread.
Do the math!
So, on a 6 core CPU, if you have any process in Task Manager constantly
running at 8%, something is off
. Please identify which task it is, and either end it right there it or uninstall the related software altogether.
Another way to check is to separate the Task Manager CPU activity graph into logical cores. Check these two screenshots:
In my example you can see one core in the middle was almost maxed out for a short amount of time. Thanks to the nature of Turbo Boost, this core would induce a boosted clock speed, leading to almost maxed-out power consumption and high temperatures. This is not always immediately visible because most programs would keep jumping from core to core, so you always see individual spikes to 100% on single core. You can try this yourself by using Prime95 and running it on only 1 thread
. All systems nominal? CPU is nice and idle? Check the dGPU status.
If you don't have any rogue tasks clogging up you CPU but your Idle power consumption is still off the charts, it might be because your NVIDIA GPU (dedicated GPU, dGPU) is not turning itself off.
Under the system of NVIDIA Optimus (MSHybrid), all common Windows apps are run on the Intel UHD Graphics (integrated GPU, iGPU) by default and the dedicated GPU (dGPU) should turn itself off when it is not needed. This removes the dGPU from the power source but it also saves power on the CPU side, because the CPU can turn off the PCI-Express x16 dGPU connection and thus achieve lower sleep states in each CPU cycle. This system can be disturbed in a number of ways, leading to higher power consumption which in turn leads to lower battey life. 1. Check which system monitoring tools you are running in the background
Some system monitoring software intentionally wakes up the dGPU. Keeping such software running in the background will inevitably lead to higher power consumption. We will keep a list of tools here which do and which do not keep the dGPU awake.
|Does not keep the dGPU awake ||Keeps the dGPU awake |
|CoreTemp ||AIDA64 (only when “Sensor” pane is open) |
|HWiNFO64 ||ASUS GPU Tweak II |
|Intel Extreme Tuning Utility ||CPUID HWMonitor |
|NVIDIA Control Panel ||MSI Afterburner |
|Speccy ||NVIDIA GeForce Experience |
|TechPowerUp Real Temp ||NVIDIA Inspector |
|ThrottleStop ||NZXT CAM |
|Windows Task Manager ||Open Hardware Monitor |
| ||TechPowerUp GPU-Z |
| ||XMG Control Center (only when “System Monitor” pane is open) |
Please check if any of the programs on the right side of the table is running in the background on your machine. If they are, please remove them from Startup in the Task Manager.
Some of the programs on the left side of the table might wake up the dGPU once for a few seconds during initialization. But according to our testing, they won’t keep the dGPU awake during normal operation.
If you want to see, whether or not your dGPU is awake or not, the best bet is to use the “Sensors” function in HWiNFO64 and keep an eye on the GPU Temperature of your NVIDIA GeForce card. If the temperature reads 0°C, the dGPU is sleeping. With a right click on the Temperature value, you can even set up an alarm in form of a sound file, notification popup or logfile entry if the temperature reaches a value ≥ 1. 2. If external monitor is connected, dGPU will be awake.
Both HDMI and USB-C/DisplayPort/Thunderbolt are connected directly to the NVIDIA GeForce card. This dedicated connection gives the XMG FUSION 15 the power to drive very high resolutions, refresh rates and to support G-SYNC and FreeSync on external screens. The trade-off: the dGPU will always be awake as soon as an external monitor is connected. Rendering can still happen on the iGPU (Intel UHD Graphics) - but the dGPU will always be "awake" to deliver the pixels to the screen. 3. Every app is running on dGPU as soon as external monitor is connected? No.
NVIDIA’s Control Center has a hidden function called “NVIDIA GPU Activity” which supposedly shows which app is being rendered on the dGPU. You can find it by enabling "Display GPU Activity Monitor Icon in Notification Area".
Unfortunately, this function is not accurate when using an external monitor. As soon as you have an external monitor connected, the notification window shows every newly launched app as if it’s being rendered on the dGPU, even though it is not. This has been confirmed by our NVIDIA contacts to be a general issue that affects all laptops with NVIDIA Optimus (MSHybrid) of every brand.
It does not look as if NVIDIA has any plans to resolve this issue. Therefor, the “NVIDIA GPU Activity” will continue to show inaccurate information and should rather not be used at all. 4. dGPU does not go back to sleep after disconnecting external screen while browser is open
If you launch your browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge) while you are connected to an external screen, the browser’s hardware acceleration will use the dGPU. This happens despite the fact that you are forcing that app to run on Integrated Graphics. If the browser keeps running after you connect the external screen, it will keep the dGPU awake.
Even sending the laptop to Standby and waking it up again won’t change that fact. The dGPU will only go back to sleep after you close the specific app that triggered this behaviour.
This seems to affect every laptop with NVIDIA Optimus (MSHybrid) – not only XMG laptops.
We have filed a report with NVIDIA and we are awaiting their feedback.
Here is a short list of apps that are affected and not affected by this issue:
|Affected ||Not affected (Control Group) |
|Google Chrome ||Microsoft Word |
|Mozilla Firefox ||notepad.exe |
|Microsoft Edge || |
This might also affect other apps if they are secretly using the dGPU for Hardware Acceleration. But so far, the 3 major browsers are the only apps we have confirmed to trigger this behaviour.
According to what we heard, NVIDIA does not seem to have any plans to fix this issue on a fundamental basis. Workaround #1: Restart your Browser
Close your browser and launch it again after disconnecting from the external screen. Workaround #2: Disable Hardware Acceleration in Browser
You can find this in the Settings menu of your Browser. Workaround #3: Disable and re-enable the dGPU instead of closing your Webbrowser
Download here: dGpuCycle Script.zip
Written by Notebookcheck user ‘Stepon’ (source
). You can open the script with Notepad to read the source code.
After disconnecting the external screen, run this Batch Script with Admin privileges. The script will disable and re-enable the dGPU in Device Manager. During that moment, your browser will drop the Hardware Acceleration from dGPU and go back to iGPU. Chrome will flicker for a fraction of a second. If you play any videos on your browser while running the script, you might have to restart playback by jumping to a different point in the video timeline.
With some programming skills can be further automated to always run in the background. 5. Same as above, but for most if not all apps that use a browser engine underneath.
The browser hardware acceleration issue applies to apps that are using a browser engine to create their GUI. If you launch such an app while you're connected to an external monitor, they will use the dGPU for hardware acceleration and won't let go of it until you either close the app or manually disable the dGPU. The most popular such apps are:
- Microsoft Teams
- Microsoft Visual Code
The most widespread framework for such apps is Electron
, but it's not limited to that. For example, Spotify uses a different implementation, based on Chromium browser engine.
We are not aware of any way to disable hardware acceleration on these apps. Disabling hardware acceleration in your browser won't affect those apps. The only workarounds are:
- Start the apps before you connect your external screen
- Restart the apps after you connect your external screen
- Disable and re-enable the dGPU with the above dGpuCycle script
As with other root causes in this section, this seems to apply to every laptop with NVIDIA Optimus. We have asked NVIDIA to comment in April 2020. 6. Outdated Killer Wi-Fi driver increasing power consumption.
We had a report where an outdated Killer Wi-Fi suite caused high background CPU load. If you are using a Rivet Networks Killer Wi-Fi module, please download and install the latest drivers here
. 7. Missing NVIDIA USB-C and Audio drivers keep the dGPU awake?
We have a report
from a user who made a custom install of NVIDIA drivers and unselected the NVIDIA USB-C and Audio drivers because he thought we won't need them. In this case, not having those drivers will cause the main driver to not shutdown the dGPU when searching for those two drivers. We were not able to reproduce it but we'll leave it in this guide for future reference. Solution:
reinstall NVIDIA drivers and include every
driver, even the optional ones. 8. Outdated Windows and firmware?
If you haven’t already, make sure you are running the latest Windows updates and the latest BIOS. Some major Windows milestones (also called “Redstone” updated) need to be triggered manually by opening Windows Updates, then “Checking for updates”. Under “Optional updates”, there might be a “Feature update” which you can initiate with “Download and install now” (screenshot
). 9. Third party PCIe/NVMe SSD preventing CPU from sleeping?
We had recently a few reports on budget SSDs from smaller brands preventing the CPU from reaching C8 sleep states, severely cutting battery life. If you upgrades your SSD yourself with a model that is not listed in our online shop, please consider to swap it out, re-install Windows from scratch and try again. If you found your SSD to be the culprit, please share the product name with us. 10. Corsair iCue Software causes +10W power consumption?
We have seen this report from a single user:
I spent a week trying to figure out why the processor on my Fusion 15 was consuming so much power when idle (around 10W!). My battery life was absolutely abysmal at about 2.5 hours on a full charge. I thought I had ruled out the iCue software because I closed the app completely, but it turns out only a complete uninstall will allow everything to return to normal so it must have been the mouse driver itself rather than the iCue software. Source
We haven't checked it ourselves but any kind of hardware-related 3rd party software could potentially cause power saving issues on any system. 11. Dig deeper? Check out this amazing in-depth guide about Windows power saving optimization and C-States.

Random short spikes in lag and stutter Intel Driver and Support Assistant (DSA) is acting up, causing CPU spikes up to 40% every 1-5 minutes.
Taken from this post
Intel Driver and Support Assistant (DSA) is acting up, causing CPU spikes up to 40% every 1-5 minutes. See this picture of task manager cumulative CPU time. Funny you already mentioned that it stopped working, as I experienced the same thing.
Uninstall Intel DSA for now. You can do this via the windows Apps and Programs, or if it fails for any reason, download the official Uninstaller from the intel website.
My laptop randomly wakes up from Standby. 1. Firmware solution for Wake-up 3 hours after entering Sleep/Standby. (XMG FUSION 15 only)
There was an issue with the NVIDIA USB-C driver which caused the laptop to wake up exactly 3 hours after entering Standby. The laptop was trying to transition into Hibernate (Suspend to Disk) but failed to do so. This issue is resolved in BIOS 0062 and beyond. 2. Disable Wake timers (applies to any PC and Laptop)
Depending on your Windows configuration, there might be certain task schedules (including Windows Updates) which prompt the laptop to wake-up from Sleep or Hibernate. To check on these issues, please read this article. The most common solution is to disable the “Allow wake timers” option for both “plugged in” and “on-battery”. Please note: this setting depends on each power profile and your laptop has three of them: Silent, Balanced, Enthusiast. Please switch to each of these profiles and modify “Allow wake timer” in the Advanced settings in Windows power options for each one of these. 3. Check the Wake-up cause
There is a simple command that will tell you the reason why your laptop woke up for the last time. Usually this is something like "Power Button" or "Lid Opening", but in your case it might point to a different driver or Windows component. Find "Command Prompt" in Start Menu and type:
This command does not need Admin right. Please copy it by marking the output text and pressing Enter. The marked text from the Command Prompt windows is now in your clipboard and can be pasted into a text file or message box. Alternatively you can take a picture and report back to us.
My laptop needs a long time to boot up.
Cold Boot and Wake-up from Hibernate should not take much more than 12 seconds between pressing the power button and seeing the login screen wallpaper. If your laptop takes much longer, please consider the following options. 1. Enable “Fast Boot”.
Enabling “Fast Boot” in BIOS is a requirement to use Microsoft’s “Hybrid Boot” technology which saves a lot of time on Cold Boot. Before shipping, we always enable “Fast Boot” in all XMG laptops – but it might get disabled by user operation. On some models, it might also get disabled during BIOS Reset. To make sure, you have “Fast Boot” enabled, follow these steps:
- Reboot and enter BIOS Setup [F2]
- Open [Boot] menu and enter [Boot Priority]
- Find [Fast Boot] and set it to [Enabled]
- Back in [Exit] category, select [Save Changes and Exit], Reboot
(the location of the "Fast Boot" option might be slightly, depending on your model) 2. Flash firmware again
You can clearly seperate the boot process between BIOS time and Windows time. Everything that happens before you see the XMG boot logo is BIOS time. On XMG FUSION 15, it usually takes about 7 seconds between pressing the power button and seeing the XMG boot logo for the first time. If this time period is much, much longer in your case, the root cause might be in hardware or firmware.
One potential solution was found in this post
. This user already had a system with Thunderbolt Firmware NVM v56. But based on a hunch, he just tried to update the same firmware again and it instantly fixed his long BIOS time.
It makes kind of sense. VBIOS, Thunderbolt... those are large, complex and kind of external components that are initialized in the very early steps of the the BIOS. If anything is stalling there, you won't see the boot logo because the BIOS hasn't even attempted yet to start talking to the SSD.
Rule of thumb: if you have long BIOS time before you see the XMG logo, please consider to flash the BIOS
and the Thunderbolt Firmware
Now, let's look at various Windows-based causes: 3. Clean up TEMP folders
Taken from this post
Found out, during each boot Windows (namely it's ProfSvc service) takes everything you have in users/yourprofile folder and writes over those files. I suspect it's changing some meta data in the files. Probably edditing read/write premissions. But it goes one by one. And logon process waits for it to finish. As long as your computer is relatively clean, this operation takes a second or two. But when Visual Studio update "forgets" 160 000 files in your AppData/Temp folder, it results in 35 secs of profile loading during boot. All I needed was to empty the Temp folder and the bootups are back in normal!
You can either clean the Temp folders manually or use a software like CCleaner
. Please beware, we would only recommend CCleaner to clean temp files, but don't clean the Windows Registry. It's usually safe to do but it can sometimes lead to false positive situations and side-effects. 4. Riot Games 'Vanguard' might block one of our drivers
If you have game titles from Riot Games installed, the software 'Vanguard' might be blocking the 'inpoutx64.sys' driver on some of our systems. This driver is related to the Control Center. We have heard of one single case where the presence of Vanguard lead to a significantly increased boot-time. In other cases however, it had no effect despite getting the 'Vanguard has blocked' message in Windows.
We will share this information with our ODM to see if our signed inpoutx64.sys/dll can be whitelisted. Meanwhile, please consider disabling or uninstalling Vanguard to see if it improves your boot time. 5. Consider a clean reinstall
It might be inconvenient, but if you have any boot times that are wildly longer than above reference data, please consider a clean Windows installation. 'Clean' means deleting the system partitions on your SSD in the first step of the installation procedure. Before you do this, you should backup all important data on external storage. 6. Other causes.
If your system still takes a long time to even display the XMG boot logo or to boot into the Login prompt, there might be another issue at hand. Please make sure to update your BIOS, load setup defaults, enable “Fast Boot” again and make sure that your Windows and drivers are up to date. Please also consider to follow the generic advice in this article
There is currently no other known systematic issue that prevents our laptops from doing a fast boot or fast wake-up. If you cannot resolve the issue on your machine, please consider to backup your data and do a clean Windows re-install. 7. Discussion
For XMG FUSION 15 we have opened a dedicated tread about expected boot times after a clean install. Please move all relevant discussion to this thread:
My microphone does not sound right (I might be using Discord
First, please make sure you increased the microphone gain to 100% and added the +20dB boost.
- Find "Sound settings" in Start menu
- Scroll down and click on "Sound Control Panel"
- Select "Recording" tab and double-click your microphone
- Select "Levels" tab and put everything to maximum (screenshot)
Now, some apps including Discord put additional processing on the microphone, including echo and noise cancellation. This can have a negative effect on microphone audio quality. Please see if you can disable all such options from your chat application and from the Realtek Control Panel.
+++ Troubleshooting XMG FUSION 15 (2019) +++
The following items apply only to XMG FUSION 15. Please check first if your issue is covered under the general section above. The latest BIOS and Control Center update can be found in this thread
My speaker sound is underwhelming / I cannot get Soundblaster Connect running.
Sound Blaster Connect is an important app to improve the experience of the audio system. It can increase volume (SmartVol) and Bass of the speakers. 1. Reinstall Audio drivers in the proper sequence
Normally, when all pre-requisites are met, Soundblaster Connect should install automatically from Windows. You can then find it with a simple search for “Sound Blaster” in the Windows Start menu. If Soundblaster Connect is no where to be found or if it only shows an empty screen, please follow the sequence precisely:
- Please download the Audio drivers again from our download portal
- You only need the file “AudioDriver_Package_4-in-1.zip“
- Extract the ZIP Archive
- Install Smart Sound Technology and reboot (!)
- Install Realtek Audio and reboot
- Install Speaker EQ and reboot
- Install CreativeAudioEffectsComponent and reboot
If you are connected to the Internet, the system will now automatically install "Sound Blaster Connect" from Microsoft Store. This might take a few minutes or more.
(The last 3 reboots are actually not necessary. Only the reboot after “Smart Sound Technology” is a hard requirement. But we kept the reboots after each step for the sake of redundancy.)
My touchpad sometimes does not react.
This is a very rare issue that we have encountered a few times. For some users we have fixed it by replacing the laptop. The root cause is not entirely clear yet but there have been a few successful workarounds. Solution #1: Set Touchpad to “Most Sensitive”
Find the “Touchpad” settings in Windows Start menu and change the sensitivity setting to “Most Sensitive”. Please report via PM with your order number if this fixes the issue for you. Solution #2: Reinstall BIOS and Control Center
We have reports from users who got rid of any Touchpad issues by reinstalling the BIOS and Control Center. Please get the appropriate downloads from our Download Portal.
My CPU shows high activity in idle while having devices connected to USB-C port.
We are currently tracking an issue where users have reported >10% CPU usage in Idle while having certain devices connected to the USB-C port. Current Workaround:
Disable Automatic Sleep on Thunderbolt controller
Device Manager > System devices > Thunderbolt Controller > Power Management > Disable "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"
I’m unable to turn off my keyboard backlight during boot.
Normally, if you disable the keyboard backlight in Control Center using the slider switch, it should also be disabled during Reboot, Cold Boot etc. We had one report of a rare issue where this settings was not applied to firmware anymore. If you encounter this issue, please click the “Restore” button in Control Center to reset all you Keyboard Backlight settings. Then, try again to disable the Keyboard Backlight and reboot.
My keyboard backlight is not turning on anymore.
We had a few reports of keyboard backlight not being able to turn on anymore. If you encounter this issue, please reset your BIOS settings.
- Reboot and enter BIOS Setup [F2]
- Open [Exit] menu; select and confirm [Restore Defaults] but do not reboot yet
- Open [Boot] menu and enter [Boot Priority]
- Find [Fast Boot] and set it to [Enabled]
- Back in [Exit] category, select [Save Changes and Exit], Reboot
I cannot access my BIOS Setup (F2) anymore.
This is another very rare issue that was only reported once so far. If you cannot access your BIOS Setup, you cannot do a BIOS Reset anymore.
Solution: Remove CMOS Jumper from Mainboard and Reboot
The mainboard of XMG FUSION 15 has a jumper to control the BIOS Reset. In order to reach this jumper, you will need to remove the bottom case of the laptop. This is as easy as removing the 10 screws on the bottom side and then simply lifting the bottom cover away from the laptop.
The jumper is located next to the WiFi module
If the jumper is removed, the laptop will show a special menu after on boot which will allow you to reset the BIOS Settings to Default.
After having done this Reset, please place the jumper again it it's original position, connecting pins "1" and "2" as seen in the "Top View" picture linked above.
Now, please see if you can now get back into BIOS Setup with the F2 key during boot.
My external USB mouse sometimes stops moving.
We have some reports from USB gaming mouse with ≥1000Hz polling rate that sometimes stop working when used together with USB hubs, both on USB-A and USB-C (Thunderbolt).
Please install the latest official drivers from your mouse vendor and see if you can reduce the polling rate to 500Hz to see if it makes any difference.
I would like to improve my DPC Latencies.
For guaranteed low DPC latencies, please check out our SCHENKER Audio Editions
. For all other models, we're going to collect a number of tips here over time.
- Please check BIOS 0114 and Control Center 220.127.116.11 to see if it improves your results
- Uninstall NVIDIA GameReady driver and switch to NVIDIA Studio driver
- Uninstall Sound Blaster and other 3rd party audio apps
- Uninstall any 3rd party app that is deeply webbed into the system, including: system monitoring and tuning, anti-virus, firewalls, copy protection and anti-cheat etc.
- Follow the tips on this website: Sweetwater Audio: PC Optimization Guide for Windows 10
- to be continued
I have issues with USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 adapters on XMG FUSION 15
XMG FUSION 15 (2019, XFU15L19) had a bit of a shaky history with some USB-C adapters and Thunderbolt Docking Stations. It seems like the most serious issues have been ironed out with BIOS 0064 and Thunderbolt Firmware-Update NVM v56. If you plan to use USB-C port and you purchased your laptop before May 2020, please make sure to update your firmware as explained in this thread:
If you are still not sure which USB-C peripherals to buy, please check out our list of validated products in this thread:
That's all, folks.

Reformatted version for mobile users: So, a while ago we asked for questions for Exurb1a. We got a bunch and sent most of then over. It's been about a month since. Here are the Questions and the answers. Enjoy!
|Questions ||Answers |
|Who are your favourite philosophers and how have they influenced your work, most specifically the fifth science? ||So, we were gently bullied into reading a bunch of philosophers as undergrads, but the one who stays with me is David Chalmers, a wonderful contemporary Australian. He got me into panpsychism, which eventually ended up in some contorted form as The Fifth Science. (I’m also quite a big fan of lots of Peter Singer’s moral philosophy, and Kant will always, always be the philosopher boi of my heart. Critique of Pure Reason 4eva.) |
|Favourite insult (Bulgarian and otherwise)? ||Not an insult as such, but there’s a Bulgarian phrase I like very much: за това няма да се оправим. It basically translates as, “And that’s why we don’t improve.” If anything fucks up in Bulgarian life in public, it’s quite fashionable to point to the thing and say exactly that: Uh-huh, that’s why we’re still not getting better. I think all countries can learn to use this in their own way. British panic buying at the moment, for example. (It hits me reading this back now that it’s basically a more general version of, And this is why we can’t have nice things.) Also, Noel Gallagher recently said of his brother, “He’s the angriest man you’ll ever meet. He’s like a man with a fork in a world of soup.” I mean that’s just great isn’t it. |
|What are your favourite books / what books do you recommend? ||I’m always at a loss to answer this because, as you must find too, your tastes change over time. But I always recommend one book in particular because I never get tired of it and it turned me into the silly mess I am now, back around 21 when I read it. It’s Fahrenheit 451. I don’t know a better-constructed collection of words, not too short, not too long. It’s a perfect novel as far as I’m concerned. |
|Do you believe in free will? ||In a universe where causes unfailingly precede effects – far as we can tell so far (please don’t bring up quantum mechanics) – no, I’m afraid can’t believe in it. Free will seems to be a necessary belief for the continuation of judicial systems and actually enjoying one’s life, but ultimately we’re atoms, and atoms obey universal laws, and whichever trajectory compelled them. On a personal level though, if someone stands on your foot and they meant to, I hope you’d still be annoyed with them. |
|What's the meaning of 326? you've mentioned it a few times in different videos. ||Yeah, a mystery to me too. Someone pointed out it kept popping up a while ago and I have no idea. Probably just laziness when it comes to random number generation on my part. |
|Do you have any recommendations for any (specifically) philosophy books? ||The Conquest of Happiness by Bertrand Russell is also wonderful for general human reading. The title says it all. I’m a bit convinced that philosophers have invented a little niche language for themselves to feel important and alienate intellectual plebs or something, and it’s irritating because it works. Or, it works to alienate people with a general interest, but who didn’t go to uni for the thing. And now the public seems to think the subject has disappeared up its own arse. (Arguably it has.) What seems to pass for philosophy of late appears to me to be holding a strong opinion like any of us would, but using big words and the passive voice to make it seem more authoritative somehow. And if anyone disagrees with you, just accuse them of ‘shoddy philosophy’ or something, whatever the hell that means. But there are still plenty of great philosophers out there with their egos in check who are willing to talk in comprehensible language. And even better they’ve written books both for the general reader and academics too, and we have to glorify those gems. I am also a very big fan of Susan Blackmoore Daniel Dennett - (though I personally think he’s totally wrong about the hard problem of consciousness. It clearly is still a hard problem and stop being mean to David Chalmers, he’s lovely.) Slavoj Žižek – (But I won’t lie, I find his books almost totally impenetrable.) John Searle And obviously, whatever you think of him, Noam Chomsky is a living legend. |
|Why did you change your YouTube profile picture? ||So. One of my favourite artists in Bulgaria designed a new turtle for some t-shirts I’ll be putting out when all this crisis business is over. I was so impressed with his design I just thought fuck it, time to upgrade. |
|If you could meet any historical person, from every time period and any place for 30 minutes, who would you choose to meet? ||Growing up was a slow process of discovering things I loved, then discovering the people who’d made them had usually died quite recently. Maybe you’ve had the same experience. Philip K. Dick was one of them. In my humble estimation he is the greatest scifi writer who ever stepped foot on this planet. I would cut off my feet for just ten minutes chatting with him. Thirty would be a real treat. |
|How much time do you spend making your YouTube videos? Have you used a storyboard for any of them? ||So these days there’s a folder on my desktop called “On the boil” of stuff I’m trying to make work, but usually doesn’t. Every now and then I’ll get excited enough by one idea to just commit to it, and then I become quite obsessed. Usually if it’s something I really really think will work, I’ll gladly keep working for weeks, freaking out, coming around, freaking out again, until it does. Or I hope it will work anyway. The Upsilon Dies Backwards video was made during the period I turned thirty. I meant to have a party or just go out to celebrate or something, but the thing felt too important to finish, so I just stayed in and finished it. Seems like a stupid decision in hindsight. I like the idea of storyboards, but never seem to get on with them. I have a 6 foot high whiteboard next to my desk that I also like the idea of and almost literally never use. I personally think in words most of the time and prefer to just make chaotic notes in a Word document until order hopefully pops out miraculously. |
|Have you ever had an idea in your head that you have a really strong grasp of, but you can’t make it into any form of structured or comprehensible medium? You have some really strong themes that you’re sure would work super well, but all those themes are in your head and there’s no structured story that you can gather from it. Is that common? Have you ever overpowered that? Did you leave it? Or have you figured out what to do with it? ||I’m afraid it happens regularly. I assume it does for everyone else too, but on this side anyway: The stuff I’ve made about physics being ‘arbitrary’ or whatever doesn’t do the feeling justice. The fact that everything is just so seemingly random, from universal constants to history, it always feels to me like there’s some hand behind this. Not a god necessarily, or a spiritual force, but just some guiding principle that we’re too stupid to see whether it be a Theory of Everything or some more abstract schema we don’t have words or brains for yet. The fact that it’s built into our bones and skin and minds, that it’s right there in front of us is torture. I feel like that when I put my cat in front of the mirror and she doesn’t give a damn. It seems forever like we’re being laughed at by a joke just slightly out of our reach of comprehension. |
|With “and then we’ll be okay”, you had some idea and it wouldn’t go away until you figured something out - and you went through this whole ordeal until you finally figured it out. How did you break through and convert your ideas into a comprehensible story? ||I’m very happy that anyone thinks it was a comprehensible story. I took the idea back from the US with it just killing me, wanting to be made, but I was convinced no one would care. I wrote the entire thing at a coworking space in Sofia hoping if I was around other people I might have some inspiration. It didn’t work. (They also had beer and you were allowed to drink it at your desk. You can imagine how much work I got done when I discovered that.) All that did work in the end was forcing myself to finish the thing. That has been the guiding rule for everything I’ve made since. When you finish something, you don’t remember the hard days, they’re unimportant. All that was vital was that you actually kept going. I know that sounds pretentious, but I’ve sat here for ten minutes now trying to rewrite it, and can’t put the thing better. I’m a big fan of Frank Herbert – the author of Dune. I was sat listening to some interviews of his a while back and had this little revelatory moment at a throwaway comment he made. He said he always assumed he could only write when he was inspired. Then he decided to ignore that and just write when he didn’t feel inspired too. He found that when he went back over his stuff weeks later, he couldn’t tell what was written when he felt ‘on’, and what wasn’t. I have found this to be true also. The spice must flow. |
|How do you write like you do? Is there a sort of template you follow? ||None. Mostly just ripping off Philip K. Dick. I like Neil Gaiman’s line about when he told Terry Pratchett, “I think I know how to write books now.” And Terry Pratchett replied something like, “No, you just know how to write that book.” There are two great joys as far as I’m concerned. One is falling in love, and I don’t understand how anyone could argue with that. The other is when you’re just minding your own mental business in the shower or at the gym or something, and suddenly, for no reason, an idea falls into your head. And you can’t wait to sit down and see where it goes. Honestly, I live for those days. The writing is just incidental. |
|What school of thinking do you consider yourself to go by? (e.g transhumanism etc.) ||I’ve gone back to humanism these days. I was very excited by the transhumanist promises as a younger man, but we have such bigger fish to fry at the moment, and I don’t just mean covid-19. I’m all for life-extension and mind-uploading and what have you, but for as long as over a billion people are living in extreme poverty, it feels a bit like rearranging the deckchairs on The Titanic. We’re going to look back on this period at some point, and if I could make a humble prediction, I’ll bet it’s going to seem pretty weird we lived in an age when we had space stations, and simultaneously swathes of humans with no access to clean drinking water. This isn’t some attempt at a bleeding heart rant, but I also suspect it’ll seem weird that we don’t have much of a problem publicly with factory farming at the moment, despite doing it to mammals which are clearly conscious enough to suffer and want to protect their young just like we do. The main difference being they can’t say, “Ouch,” or “Fuck off.” These are not the hallmarks of an advanced civilisation. I hope we get there, but it’s not yet. |
|How many of your videos are you happy with? ||None. Not trying to be facetious, but really, none. The ideas always seemed lovely, and then degraded into white noise the more real they became. |
|Will any of your other works appear in paperback (The Bridge To Lucy Dunne and Logic Beach pt. 1)? ||I’m trying quite hard at the moment to finish a book called Geometry for Ocelots, and I’ll be damned if it doesn’t make it into paperback. |
|In what order should we read your books? ||Any you like. Really. They’re all terrible. |
|What’s your favourite alcoholic beverage? ||I have never had a bad evening with margaritas. Only bad mornings. Videos sometimes take weeks to make so I’ve developed a little ritual to keep me going. When something is finally done and uploaded, I like to go buy a Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse beer from the shop under my apartment block. I don’t really smoke these days, but I allow myself just one cigarette to go with the beer and I don’t feel so guilty for that. |
|Will there ever be audiobook versions of your books? ||Yes, there almost was with The Fifth Science, but I fucked up the recording with going too fast. I’ve learned my lesson, I hope – please bear with me. |
|Would you say man is naturally good or evil? What makes you say so? ||Good. Always fundamentally good. Even if it’s just from evolutionary concern for our own kin, but the very slow, very very slow progression over history has been towards recognising each other as actual humans. I used to be blown away constantly with how wonderful it is to live in a technological civilisation like this one. These days I’m more impressed we actually have a civilisation at all. Things aren’t great presently, no sane person would pretend the world is fine. But the fact that we actually developed educational and legal and health systems, and somehow got them to work well enough that we can take normally personal emotions like concern for one’s sick, and amplify to it a national level? – that’s a fucking miracle as far as I’m concerned. And almost all of it happened as a result of people who were audacious enough to champion kindness over civilisational entropy. Things could be much better. Things could be disastrously worse. |
|What do you think of Schopenhauer’s work? ||It’s been about a decade since I read him, please be gentle. But one idea that really stuck in my head was how humans are necessarily part of a unity, the thing-in-itself. And whether we like it or not, we’re bound up in the ultimate will. The Stanford Encylopedia of Philosophy puts it way better: “We can objectively perceive our hand as an external object, as a surgeon might perceive it during a medical operation, and we can also be subjectively aware of our hand as something we inhabit, as something we willfully move, and of which we can feel its inner muscular workings.” A century and a bit later, I feel like Carl Sagan was saying much the same thing with the , “We’re made of star stuff” line. |
|What music pieces did you use for Upsilon dies backwards? ||I’m afraid most of it was stock music, and one piece stolen from Madame Butterfly. I find most of it on my laptop, and said laptop is now an ex-laptop, but if I do find specifics again I’ll put it out there for sure. |
|Are you planning on writing any other book? ||I promise it’s coming. Thank you for the interest! |
|What got you into this kind of stuff? How were you "enlightened"? Sorry if its a dumb question, but its been on my mind for a bit. ||When it comes to things on YouTube going better than expected: total chance and nothing else. Same as anyone else could get into this. I was a bit bored and sad one day and made a video that got far more attention than it should have and cautiously thought, “Hmm, could I do more of this?” The thing I notice most larger YouTubers not saying to their audience when it comes to advice is that it’s not too hard to carry on making stuff once someone is watching. (New problems arise: lack of inspiration, burn out, etc, but it’s not the same.) The hardest days are very early on when you’ve only got your own ambition as coal in the burner and not many people – or maybe no one – know/s who you are yet. (It’s also a blessing in disguise because you can make whatever you want and never worry about what people will think, but I digress.) If you’re there right now at the beginning, please, please, please just keep going. Otherwise you might be depriving the world of wonderful art and we’ll never know. It is considerably easier when you have a few people cheering you on. At least get to that point before giving up, if you really must give up. |
|What made you start your YouTube channel? ||I’m afraid it’s the same answer as above; but people being kind kept me going. |
|What languages do you speak? ||Very few, though even fewer passably. Ironically my worst is Bulgarian, the language of the country where I live. The grammar was designed specifically to make foreigners depressed. |
|How did you create the animations for “and then we’ll be okay”? ||Literally just using the watercolour filter in Photoshop. It sounds simple, and it was, but it took weeks to find and I was very happy when I did. |
|You mentioned in a video that you really liked "2001: A space odyssey" as a kid. What other movies do you like that might have influenced your work? ||One’s taste changes over the years of course, but a favourite of recent years is a movie called There Will Be Blood. I could watch it over and over. The writing is perfect, the theme is great, and the ending is so fucking dark. My other favourites are: Wild Tales (Relatos Salvajes) ((Just what a fucking masterpiece.)) Das Boot Timecrimes (Los Cronocrimenes) And recently: Jojo Rabbit. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything at the cinema as good as that, went back to see it twice more. Perfect writing; perfect comedic treatment of a delicate subject matter. When the credits came up I was trying quite hard to keep it together emotionally. I looked over to my friend and was very relieved to see she’d already stopped trying to keep it in, so we just broke down for a bit. Another isn’t a movie, but the TV series Peep Show defined my humour from my teen years and I never really got over it. It’s hilarious, I bet you’ll like it. https://youtu.be/D70qWf9__PU |
|What was your first video you made in your sort of style? And how do you get over motivation issues? ||I really don’t know to be honest, because I’m not sure what my style is. I just make stuff when the idea feels good enough not to stop. With motivation, when an idea feels fun enough, I find it quite hard to sleep or relax until it’s done. I said this above, but even on those difficult days, it is very motivating to know that there might still be people out there who’ll watch this thing if I can only finish it. I am extremely impressed by people who’ve continued making art with no one watching, only to die and then find recognition. That reminds me. There’s a book called Stoner by John Williams. It sold a few thousand copies when it came out in the sixties, and no one seemed to care too much. For a number of reasons it suddenly got proper recognition last decade, years after the author’s death. As much as that’s a tragedy, I’m still very glad he wrote it; it’s a masterpiece. |
|Have you ever been strongly influenced/inspired by something you saw here (The Exurb1a subreddit)? ||All the time. I check in every now and then and have been blown away by the fact that anyone’s still following my stuff. From the animation of Upsilon Dies Backwards by KamAniMations to people just being generally lovely. It is always an honour to see folks actually giving a damn. I don’t know why you are if you are, but I’m extremely touched. |
|What are your opinions on the upcoming Dune movie? ||My best friend in Bulgaria and I have both agreed that when parts one and two are out, there’s not much to live for after that. Denis. Fucking. Villenueve. If he can’t do it, no one can – especially after Blade Runner 2049. Hype is the mindkiller, but I can’t wait. |
|Other than the silver jews, who are your musical inspirations? ||I have a rather simple answer to this one: Joanna Newsom. She’s defined my musical listening for the last decade. I’ve gone through everything of hers and loved it all. She’s my spirit animal. |
|What do you think about stoicism [the endurance of pain or hardship without the display of feelings and without complaint.]? Do you think it’s good, bad, beneficial, crucial, etc? ||This was such a good question I just took it into the shower to mull over. I think I’ve got an answer and it’s going to be rambling and self-indulgent, but we’re in the middle of a global crisis and I’m trapped inside like you are, so please just bear with me if you can. Years ago back in the UK – before I had any idea I would make dick jokes on the internet for a living – I went through something of a distressing episode in my life as we all do. I looked around for all the usual remedies: advice forums online, chemical distraction, exercise, etc – and quite to my surprise as a hard scientific materialist found Buddhism. I started going to meetings held by a Buddhist nun who I grew fond of as a kind of aunt figure, became obsessed with Buddhist scripture, and took up meditating every day after work. The compelling answer to the problem of suffering – from a Buddhist slant – was that suffering arises from clinging to things. The death of a loved one hurts, apparently, not just because we’ve lost them, but because we’re still clinging to them as they were when they were alive. All things wither and fade and die eventually and it’s clinging that ultimately makes them painful for us when they go, etc etc etc. What the Buddhists seemed to try and foster instead was a kind of general love and concern for everyone. They usually eschewed passion and impulsiveness as the flipside of dark emotions like hate and possessiveness. This was all very attractive, and sounded quite similar to ancient Greek stoicism – as you mentioned. I spent lots of time trying to internalise this kind of thinking, usually in mediation. I came around to the idea that if I was going to take this seriously, I would quit my job and ordain as a Buddhist monk and put the Dharma at the centre of my life, and that was exactly what I planned to do. However. One day while meditating it hit me out of nowhere that if I was really going to try and follow this thing, I probably wouldn’t be able to stay interested in writing. Or, maybe I could, but it wouldn’t arise from a manic place anymore and the stories would never come back. Likewise that kind of heady energy one gets in the first months of a relationship, or the mad drive to finish something regardless of time constraints or health – all that stuff, all those lovely peak experiences, they were apparently detrimental and would all have to go in favour of mental clarity. I couldn’t bear the thought. And though I continued going to meetings and kept up the practice for a while, slowly the thing died for me because I knew I wasn’t brave or determined enough to give up sense enjoyment, or peak experience, or writing. So I fell out of the thing eventually and returned to good old humanism where I’ve been ever since. I might not be very mentally clear most of the time, but I don’t mind if the odd idea turns up now and again that I want to make. And to be honest, I’ve come around to the idea that actually clinging isn’t a good or bad thing. It’s just what we do. We know when we get a dog that we’ll lose him or her one day, but until we do, it doesn’t diminish all the lovely walks. We know when we get married that one of us will probably go first, and the years after that will be tough. But it doesn’t diminish years of being in love. Until we’re technological superbeings, entropy is non-negotiable. But I personally think these days it’s much braver to set sail on a ship you know will one day sink than opt to watch from the beach. So that is my very longwinded answer. Yes, I’m sure stoicism is super helpful, but I’m quite convinced that love and actual human-ing is only possible by playing the game. That is: becoming attached as though you’ll never lose someone, and trying to live like that until you lose them. I would advocate for tragic humanism. |
|Why a turtle? ||Years ago my friend and I had two tortoises as pets. One unfortunately died early on, the other lived and was fine. We lost contact for various reasons – my friend and I – and I missed the tortoise, hence the icon. These days I have accepted it’s taken for a turtle and that’s entirely fine. |
|What do you use to find your stock video clips? ||So, there are lots of sites like Videvo and Pixabay where you can generally find footage for free, or for a small subscription fee. Anything more specific and there are rather considerably more expensive sites out there like Shutterstock. What do you edit your videos with? I’m using Sony Vegas Pro because change scares me and so does technology. |
|In your opinion, if parallel universes exist, where are they? Are universes popping in and out of existence one after another for all time and beyond are all universes happening at the same time. and if they are happening all at the same time, could we get to them? ||Yeah, that’s a fun one. God knows. (Possibly literally :-) ) We still don’t know if our models of wave function collapse are correct when it comes to quantum mechanics, and that’s where the madness comes in. For all my stupids, it seems very odd that a universe like ours would be so economical when it comes to natural law, and then suddenly just go off the rails when it comes to making alternate realities. It doesn’t seem in Her nature, but we also have no idea what Her nature actually is yet. If parallel universes is how it is, we’ll adapt conceptually eventually. But I’d be very, very fucking surprised if with every moment of wave function collapse the universe births a new version of Herself. On the flipside there’ll be plenty of universes next door where I’m not surprised, so that’s fine. Ted Chiang has a great short story in his book Exhalation called Anxiety is the Dizziness of Freedom about exactly your question by the way. If you haven’t read it already, I’d really urge you to check it out. (The whole book actually, it’s great.) |
|THE END. ||THE END. |
If you’re interested in how gambling started, and the story behind the bookmaker, you can find out the history here. A History of Betting in the UK. What we know about the history of betting in the UK is that it’s been a long arduous task to get to where it is today. The fully licensed betting shops and now online gambling have revolutionised where the industry has come from. The UK’s online gambling market continues to be rife with sports betting, online casinos, and bingo sites. Despite the government taking a stricter stance towards gambling in recent years, and a 43% decrease in business since 1970 – there are approximately 9,000 betting shops that are still very much alive on the little island. Power, which has 58 British shops, mostly in and around London, announced profits of £55.2m for 2007, half of this coming from online operations. But its UK shops also made money and it wants In 1960, the UK paved the way for licensed betting shops to be opened and this helped to take gambling away from the pubs and into more regulated premises. The 1963 act simply tidied up some of the earlier rulings and the biggest development saw the establishment of the British horse racing levy board.
